This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Volvo dealer.
The car engine has completely shut down on 3 separate occasions.
We discovered that the issue seems to be the car thinks it is out of gas even though it has around 5 gallons of gas in it.
The first time we reported to volvo but did not take in for service as the car started running.
The second time the engine stopped while driving down the interstate. We took car to Volvo and they replaced a sensor.
The third time it occurred (still with Volvo) they replaced the gas tank and fuel pump. We are still working with Volvo to ensure the issue is resolved.

My Volvo has now been back to the dealer for the fourth time today. This issue hasn't been resolved even after the dealer replaced the fuel sensor and gas tank on the first service. They can't seem to locate any other issues, but from what I have found online, it might be the ECM is set incorrectly.
Update from Sep 13, 2018: So after 4 attempts for the Volvo service department to figure out the problem, they were finally able to replicate it and determined that it was a software glitch. They reset the software and have told me that it is fixed, so fingers crossed.
