Impala LT 3.6L

I'm driving, coming from downtown Chicago. I take off from the light to make a turn half a block up to turn into the mall and can't. No power steering available at all. I almost crashed into the plot and island. I could barely turn the wheel. That was a close call. I could have killed someone or myself.

I see this happening to all the Impalas with low mileage on them. If they don't take these cars off the street some one will die. It's going to happen. Chevy know theres a problem and won't do anything. Hear me Chevy - Death is around the corner, big lawsuits are around the corner. Someone will die, someone will die, someone will die, someone will die. Losing control of your car is the reason we have to take drivers test and study the road. But just like that power steering out and you're on your own.

Recall this car asap. I see little old ladies drive this car how will they control the steering when it goes out on them at 70mph?

Was driving home and a message popped up that said “drive with caution power steering failure”. I was able to make it home which was less than a mile away at the time. It was extremely hard to turn the wheel. Took it in and was told by the Chevy dealership the entire power steering system had to be replaced which would cost us $3,100. Thankfully when they checked, we had purchased the extended warranty which covered the entire cost. Unexpected to have the power steering fail on a car like this which is still in very good condition.

I love the car but having the power steering randomly stop working is very dangerous.

Impala 2LTZ 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 28,000 miles

On 11/20/17 my wife was driving one of our daughters to school. Luckily, they were on city streets when the car gave an alert on the dash of "POWER STEERING FAILURE! DRIVE WITH CAUTION". My wife stated that she was barely able to turn the wheel, even in motion, even using her full strength and body weight (*NOTE : My wife was a deputy coroner's investigator, and literally lifted dead bodies as part of her job. She is no wimp!). She parked the car and had it towed to our dealer. The dealer says there was a total failure of the electronic power steering rack and pinion system. Apparently the parts that are needed to repair/replace it are on national back order, and it has been over two weeks and according to my service rep, GM/Chevy has not responded to their request for an ETA on the parts. The dealership is keeping the car as it is unsafe to drive at this time. If the parts are so back ordered, and GM is not responding to my dealer, I am thinking there may, or should be, a recall coming. At any rate, I am being told they will likely have the car through the new year. Even if repaired, I am concerned for the safety factor of a repeat failure if they do not have an updated or redesigned part to fix this problem. I am considering pushing for a Lemon Law buy back......... I can not believe that GM/Chevy won't even respond to their own dealers!!!!! I should have never left Audi.
