Escape SL 1.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 83,000 miles

Just purchased this nice 2018 Ford Escape with a 1.5L engine. Drove it for approx. 3 weeks and boom! just out of nowhere, engine overheating warning on dash so I immediately pulled over. Sure enough, coolant reservoir had antifreeze boiling so I let it cool down and called a tow truck to haul to auto repair shop. They ran all kind of diagnostics. Checked water pump=good; checked for leaks=no leaks; fan belts=all good. Finally they did a block pressure test and found there's coolant leak into cylinder #2. They told me that to repair this problem, I will need to purchase a new short block with a total of $8,000.00. Paid $300 for diagnostics.

Just picked up the car and drove it home approx. 40 miles from shop and started to overheat as I made it home. Let it cool down and added some coolant as it was a little low and drove around town for another 45mins to an hour or so. Didn't overheat this time. Not sure what to do at this point since the car does not have any warranty and I haven't contacted the dealer I bought the car from yet. Since I've only had the car for 3 weeks, does the dealer have any responsibility to repair the car? Regards, Dan... I'm in a bind as I don't have $8K additional for these repairs.

Be careful what you buy. The car salesman should have told me something they just let me buy that truck and I just bought it last year in September. It’s been serviced every time it was time for it to be. The problem came with no warning.

Update from May 3, 2021: Coolant overheat.

Escape Eco Boost 1.5L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 124,000 miles

New Radiator and fan, oil not cloudy, antifreeze is empty, no leaks visible, and it of course overheated. It intermittently stops and normalizes. I checked after overnight - there was no antifreeze in reservoir.

This was just supposedly fixed less than a week ago with a head gasket replacement. Now I had to have it towed in and then they didn't start on it for 3 days, to find out their claim of the thermostat sensor went to the engine was scored and they missed that the last time. So they are ordering a new part called the entire engine.
