After noticing a flat on the right rear I proceeded to remove the tire to carry to shop for repair. My factory supplied lug nut wrench would not fit on the lug nuts. I had to find a 7/8 inch six point socket and had to drive the socket onto the lug nuts in order to get them off. After removing each lug nut, I had to drive the nut from the socket with a drift pin. When i carried the tire to my tire dealer for warranty repair I talked to him about my problem since he also does my warranty rotations. I was told by him that this is a common problem with F150 trucks with the chrome plated lug nuts. Not only was this a problem with this event, but I also found that all the lug nuts on my vehicle are in the same condition, therefore if I have a flat while on the road I will not be able to get the flat tire off to use my spare. I am sure I am not the only F150 owner that has this problem. It cost me $40.00 to replace these lug nuts and will cost me another $120.00 to replace the rest not including the possibility that I may cause other damage trying to remove the remaining bad nuts. I would like to know if there has been other complaints about this problem.

could not get rear wheels off / lug nuts need replacing

Every October 1st I aim to put my winter tires on and every April 1st I aim to put my all season tires on depending on the weather each year. My 2012 Ford F150 Platinum stopped this. Initially the lug nuts would not come off or would break. This is a design fault - water gets in under the chrome caps, freezes, expands and breaks the lug nut covers making them spin. The cost was $300 each time we wanted to change the wheels - $600 / year.

Ford would not help.

On top of this trying to get the rear wheels off was a nightmare - we looked up forums who suggested losing the lug nuts, driving forward and braking sharply to loosen them. We went to a friend's shop and used a sledge hammer and 2X4 which did not work. we took the truck to a Ford Dealership and watched 4 of their mechanics use sledge hammers with the truck on ramps - it took 4 of them 20 minutes to get the back two wheels off... they admitted it was a design fault and the cost was up to the owner! We did not have this problem with our 2006 Ford F150 Lariat!
