My GMC Envoy was parked unattended in my driveway directly next to my house. My sons and I were in the backyard playing when my oldest son went to retrieve his ball from the driveway. He came back screaming mom your truck is on fire.I immediately ran over to see the truck full of fire and smoke. I called 911. The truck damage was already done before the firefighters arrived. It appeared to come from the driver side window area. After doing some research I learned a lot of GMC trucks had recalls on certain parts that could put the vehicle at risk for a for setting it's self on fire.I never received any information on recalls for the window switch or was aware of the national recall until I looked into it the evening of the fire.I strongly believe the window switch is what caused the fire. It had to be a defective product made by the manufacturing company.

Was park, went to back up and felt like there was no power steering. Ps fluid is good, belt is good, pulley seems fine, no leaks, but very hard to steer. This 2004 GMC Envoy has been nothing but a headache....not to mention the speedometer doesn't work properly either.

The RPM (tac) failed and started jumping all over. On 09-14-14 the speedometer started to fail. Did not fix the RPM (tac) at the time. This apparently is an on going problem with these years in the GMC product. Is it a safety issue - yes!!! one now cannot tell ones speed which could cause an accident or a citation to the driver because of this problem. To fix this instrument cluster will be in the $600 range. I believe GMC was well aware of this problem in the past years and ignored it - causing owners an undue expense on a vehicle that they paid thousands of dollars for. We bought this vehicle new and have had GMC vehicles for years - unless GMC stands up and takes responsibility I will not consider another GM product. The air conditional line failed in 2014 because of it rubbing on the frame causing me to shut off the rear air conditioner because of the cost to fix it. GM not allowing after market parts for this fix.

Long term problem with the instrument cluster that grew much worse at the beginning of this year. I'm the original owner and the vehicle currently has less than 88K miles on it. Back in 2010 the tachometer stopped functioning properly. At idle, it was reading 5000-6000 RPM. Kept watching the tach over months and it was all over the place until the needle finally rested at the 6 O'clock position. Wasn't a big deal. Early this year (2013), other gauges started reading improperly. One by one the oil pressure, speedometer, and fuel gauge all went haywire, showing readings outside of their range. The only two functional gauges left were voltage and coolant temperature when I had the entire instrument cluster replaced back in March the cluster is a common problem. There's a thread at edmunds.com with over 500 posts related to it: townhall-talk.edmunds.com/webx?14@@.F17ba01/0 didn't happen to me because I was watching all the gauges closely, but I'd hate to see someone run out of gas in the middle of nowhere because of a faulty fuel gauge.

I purchased this vehicle 10 months ago and have to replace the headlights 9 seperate times not including the brake lights 5 times. After the 3rd time the man at the auto parts store stated this is a known problem with GMC> the lights get too hot and burn up the bulb and the connectors. I have had 2 buy now 4 rabbits connectors and they make the bulb last a little longer but the exspense is sad. If this is a known problem and it is posted all over the interent from customers with the same issues why has not recall beem placed for these lights. If it is heating hot enough to melt a connector that is a fire hazard and needs to be recalled. Now my speedometer stoped working and to my surprise I wass advised this also a common GMC problem with the cluster repair being required to fix it.

Instrument cluster was repaired by a local repair person who's been making a living repairing these gauges and clusters for 10 years now. My gauges would fluctuate all over the place and my fuel gauge tells me I have 100+ miles left in the tank and then I run out of gas. Even with the gauges repaired, I still have a faulty fuel sending unit or something that has my "estimated mileage to empty" all over the board. It shows me at 85 miles to empty when I park it, but start it back up and it goes to 140, or sometimes tips me off that it's actually low on fuel. I'm frustrated, can't seem to get any straight answers from anyone.

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy XL. The contact stated that the instrument panel was inoperable and worked intermittently. He was unable to determine how fast he was traveling and how much gasoline was in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failure. The dealer offered no assistance. The contact did not inform the manufacturer of the failure nor was the vehicle repaired. The current mileage was 60,000 and the failure mileage was 45,000.

Envoy XL

We have had numerous electrical problems with the Envoy, but I am writing about the instrument cluster panel. The failure of the panel caused the speedometer to fail. The speedometer registers over 120 mph regardless of the speed of the vehicle, or whether the vehicle is turned off or on. The mechanic who investigated the issue stated that there were numerous diagnostic errors that had to be corrected before he could successfully diagnose the bad instrument cluster. This is a known issue with the Envoy, GMC will not accept responsibility and the failed instrument panel can result in accidents.

Envoy XL

  • 81,300 miles
2004 Envoy, 81,300 miles. Fuel gauge and speedometer not working or when they do it is very erratic and unreliable. On a trip through min I noticed the gauge said I was going 70 mph in 45 zone. Then ran out of gas on another trip not realizing the fuel gauge was also not functioning correctly. At this point I use my garmin for determining speed. Looking to get it fixed but was estimated the cost for new instrument cluster panel would be $600.

Envoy XL

  • 51,000 miles
The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy XL. While driving approximately 30 mph the instrument panel cluster failed to function properly. He stated that the speedometer and fuel gauges would shut on and off at times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the instrument panel cluster needed to be replaced. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact referenced recall 03V096000, electrical system wiring, interior/under dash and was advised that this was for the 2002 model year. The VIN was unavailable. Then failure mileage was 51,000 and the current mileage was 55,000.

Envoy XL

  • 52,000 miles
In December 2009 my 2004 Envoy XL's tachometer went off line. It starts at about the 3 O'clock position. Then a month later the odometer stuck at about 40 miles per hour even though I was stopped or obviously doing over 40. When the vehicle is turned off and restarted it corrected itself but was erratic and would tick its way up to about 40-50mph then would stop going up. This has been an ongoing problem with many 2004 Envoy. The dealer said it was a instrument panel problem and that they would have to replace it at a cost of around $500 this is a serious safety problem. When reducing speed to accommodate a curve that recommends a reduced speed I can not tell what my actual speed is to safely make the curve. Speed limits are posted for safety reasons and if we cant tell how fast we are going do to a faulty instrument panels it puts people in danger. Dealers and GMC seem to know about it and have not yet recalled the vehicles to correct the safety problem not to mention that $500 is a lot of money for most people to have to pay for a safety problem that the manufacture should be fixing.

The speedometer on the 2004 GMC Envoy is inoperative and is stuck in the 120 mph position. For about one month before, the needle was very erratic and jumped around, sometimes from 10 mph to up to 30 mph. During the erratic phase, I took the vehicle to the dealer and they said they did not notice a problem. I have not taken any steps to fix it now that it is stuck at 120 mph because the vehicle is out of warranty and the dealership will not cover the cost.

Envoy XL 4WD 6-cyl

  • 65,478 miles
While driving interstate 80 in Nebraska during the month of December 2009, the speedometer on my 2004 GMC Envoy got stuck on 70 mph. I had no idea how fast I was going and it was very dangerous driving while not knowing how fast I was going in construction zones and the roads were very snow and ice packed. Since December, I have purchased a gps with a speedometer. I do not want to pay to get this fixed because I feel this is a safety issue and GM should issue a recall. There are times the speedometer will work, then for no apparent reason while driving down the highway it will get stuck.
