Both my key/remote combos are broken. The metal key part breaks off the plastic base/remote part. One I have all gangster glued up. The other one I just took the metal key part off to make it just a remote, and combined it on my valet key to make it a key plus remote thing on one key chain.

I put the van in park this morning and pulled the key out the ignition. The metal core of the key completely detached from the key remote fob. I had to have the van towed to a local dealership. They will make a new master key for me. The key remote housing has been loose a few times in the past, but I've always been able to snap the housing back together. There is a tiny screw that clearly isn't enough to hold the housing together with everyday wear and tear usage. You cannot just put the metal core of the key back into the ignition to drive, either-the immobilizer function shuts the engine off after about 2 seconds since the metal part isn't connected to the computer chip in the remote fob. Good thing the key didn't break off when I was driving-the engine would have shut off and probably caused an accident.

I will add that a family member has the 2012 Touring edition of the Odyssey. He's had the same problems, had to get a new key made as well. The shuttle driver who brought me to work this morning was driving one of the dealership's 2010 EX-L models and said the same things happen on that van.

I called Honda to complain, they have said they will look into it as it's not covered under warranty. Of course! Only the things that never break are covered. But we shall see.

broken key fob

This is the second time my key has broken off the Fob. It is poorly designed and to me designed to break. The tiny screw is supposed to hold back the torque from turning the key? The sad part is that the keys for my 2003 Chevy Venture were better designed the key was separate from the FOB. The first time it cost me $160 to fix, the dealer is going to work with me this time $100. Okay that's still $260 out of my pocket for a poorly designed key on a car that is only one years old! My first Honda will be my last Honda.
