Outback 2.5L

  • CVT transmission

My wife had the very same issue in her 2016 Outback. We pulled into a drive thru and stopped as a car in front of us had made a mess of the turn. They put their car in reverse so we reversed a few feet to give them some room.

We sat there for about 30 seconds in park and my wife then put our car in drive. She hit the gas and it shot backwards almost hitting a car behind us before she hit the brakes. We both got a huge shock as did the person behind us.

There's no question that our car was in drive when this happened. We took it to the local dealership and got the usual runaround about how it behaved fine on a test drive and how nothing could be found amiss.

I did a search online and found three other owners who had the same problem. Subaru needs to get on top of this before someone gets hurt.

car accelerated backwards when put in drive

Backed up from a parking space, stopped, put the car in drive and pressed the accelerator. The car accelerated backwards! We missed hitting another car by maybe an inch!

The first time this happened (I have to write my other report), we thought maybe it was just a terrible driver error, but after today's incident, I know that isn't true. Our street is only one lane wide at the moment because of how it was plowed after the recent blizzard. I was driving up the street and stopped because another car was coming toward me. I stopped, put the car in reverse, and started backing up to a nearby driveway to let him pass. He pulled into one and waved me on. I stopped, put the car in drive, put my foot on the accelerator, and the car continued to go backwards! It wasn't drifting or rolling - it was acting as if I never took it out of reverse. I stopped, looked down, and the car was definitely in drive! This happened a couple of weeks ago, too, and my husband nearly hit someone. We just purchased this car a the very beginning of the year. I'm ticked!
