I have had my car for a year and a half myself, and my mother had it for a year before me. It has about 185,000 miles on it now, but I have done everything I can to take care of my car and it still slips shifting from 2nd to 3rd gears and shifts hard on some others randomly. The only gears I dont seem to be having problems with are reverse, 1st, and 2nd!!! It's gotten to where it wont even shift to 3rd until after about 5 mins of driving and me trying to shift, including manually shifting it from 2nd to 3rd! I myself have a 3.4L V6 Impala and it really embarasses me when I'm riding around with my girl riding shotgun and this happens. I'm tired of putting up with it.

I bought this car at a too good to be true price. I knew when I bought it I needed to fix a few little things. It went good for about 20000 miles and then i noticed that when I would drive the car in the city and come to a stop it would act like it was pulling a house and then bang go into gear. I found when I would shift the car manually it wouldn't happen. I figured the car was beat on because I found out its was a repo return (wish i would have gotten a car fax) so I thought this was a isolated issue. I was so wrong when I drove it to the tranny shop they already knew what was wrong. This pissed me off when I found out that the shift solenoid in almost all impalas is crap. If you catch it soon enough its a 800-900 dollar fix if not it takes the tranny with it and its 2200-1700$. Gm knows these trannys are sh*t and won't do anything about it. I had to spend money I didn't have to fix this pos. But for all of you
who say buy a pos foreign vehicle (ex honda&toyota to name a few) do your homework their cars are even worse. I have driven their crap and spent more money on fixing that crap too(300$ on a f-ing alternator). I will only buy american regardless of this issue because they are cheaper to fix when need be. I will still get way over 200,000 miles with this car.

Hi, I have a problem with my 04 impala ss. Is a f*cking pain in the ass. my car transmissions slips all the time now. it started slipping here and there at first but now it does it more often to the point where it slips like pretty much all the time especially when I stop completely and then the transmissions slips on 1 and 2nd gear and also does hard shifts. I can't believe that GM hasn't done a recall to fix this problem. CHEVY SUCKS !!

I PURCHASED MY CHECY IMPALA 3.4L 9 MONTHS AGO WITH 59,000 MILES ON IT AND I LIKED IT BCZ IT WAS SMOOTH AND I LIKED THE STEREO..BUT I REALIZED THAT THIS MOTHERF*CKER IS A PIECE OF SH*T EVER SINCE IT STARTED BREAKING DOWN: ENGINE SMELL, BEARING F*CKED UP, OVERHEATING,AND FINALLY THE GODDAMN TRANSMISSION F*CKED UP UP LIKE SHE HAD SEX WITH AN IMPALA..PURCHASING THIS CAR WAS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE, WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME COZ ONCE IT STARTS ITS NON STOP..I THINK GM AINT GOT NO SHAME SELLING CARS LIKE THAT MODEL.. Pretty much the same as everyone else has said so far. Car is usually cold and you come up to a stop and the transmission slips. You need to let off the gas and let it re-engage before going again. It also will shift hard every now and then. After reading about everyone else's problem, I believe GM should definitely have done a recall to have this problem fixed. It is not a one off and they probably are fully aware of this. Appears they will do nothing which is a crying shame.

I have been a Chevrolet Person all my life. I restore old Chevy Trucks for a hobby. This Impala has been a nuisance for a while. First we would park it on a hill, put it in park and it would roll back or forward, depending on the hill) about 3 inches. This soon became about 6 inches. We have always been faithful about the maintenance, but recently I took it in to have the 100,000 mile work done on it. My mechanic said that the transmission, after changing the oil, etc., was getting ready to "give the aXX". I told him to adjust the bands and it should be good for another 50,000. He said this transmission does not have adjustable anything.

Transmission slipping, gm needs to step up to the plate and fix this problem. I can see there are many more complaints online. I paid for this car with 72 payments and I bought it new. Then I paid more for it with my money the govt. Gave them. Bailout money.
I have recently had the wheel bearings replaced at 70000 miles. I feel as if we cannot make a good car in America.

Never again will I buy an american made car. I have been a Union member for 35 years so I bought american, chevy always had a good name NOT ANY MORE nor do I want a GM car. I bought my car right off the showroom floor 0 miles My problems started when my car hit 50,000 I had to have the entire instrument cluster replaced none of the gauges worked I contacted GM they were aware of the problem and actually said "Factory Malfunction" however it would have to be replaced at a cost to me since it had not been recalled, this cost me $1,283, then my traction and ABS system lights keep activating, now I find out my transmission is slipping, when I turn the car on and pull out or turn it grinds and fels like it is dragging again I see/hear of so many complaints and again as with the cluster it is not under warrenty and GM will no longer speak with me.
I really hate this car and wish I would have purchased another Honda I tell everyone that will listen not to buy a chevy, very disapointed I will be lucky if I get anything on a trade in value

Thought I had a gem when I got my 2004 Impala. Boy, was I fooled. After reading about the complaints about the transmissoin these cars have been having, I decided that I would post one of my own. Several years ago, we had a different kind of vehicle that had transmission problems and this car was a purchased so that the transmission would not be replaced again only to have another car with the same problem. My Impala was a "Demo" and was sold as a one - owner. Man, did I ever learn a lesson from that. I would not advise anyone to purchase an Impala. My husband and I are looking at other vehicles trying to decide what to buy and I'll tell you one thing, it will not be anything from GM.

The second pattern slips in and out. man i am real disapointed in the way this american model can be all so wrong. the way this car felt at 77,000 miles was great but now at 114,000 this car is doin somebig numbers in my pocket its just one thing after another this car is a peice of sh*t really. I could either rebuild it or replace it for $2400.

While during an oil change I mentioned to our local mechanic (yes what was supposed to be a true auto shop not a Wal Mart Special lube job) that the car seemed to slip when accelerating at stop signs etc. He said "Ah it's just the over drive don't worry about it"
Mentioned it to him again that spring..."Ah it's just the over drive..."
One day it truly felt like someone had read ended me so I took it to them again, they pulled the engine code and said you need a new transmission. Yea...cause as a single mom I've got 3500 sitting around...
Got a second opinion and they said have you ever had the transmission fluid replaced..nope I hadn't - they dropped the pan, replaced fluid and issue was resolved for about a year. Then on trips over 4hrs it started doing it again and NOT all the time...it is very hit and miss on when it slips...coming to a full stop, allowing the engine a few seconds and proceeding rarely gets a slip.
I can tell you this...the car will be run into the ground before I spend 3K plus on something that obviously GM knows about but in their govt bail out who gives a crap mode is too busy ensuring THEY get a bonus this year...
Yep - never ever will purchase a Chevy again - and I'm in the market for a truck for my landscaping biz and another for my son - all of course which will need to be purchased used...so since I now understand how GM treats it's known problems they can be assured I will not bother them with my money again...

TRANNY START SLIPPING. NOW AS OF LAST WEEK. 11/13/2010. WHEN PULLING OFF FROM RED LIGHT. ALMOST FELT LIKE SOMEONE HAD REAR ENDED ME. SEEDDOMETER CLUSTER HAD GONE OUT. ALWAYS PUTTING NEW BRAKES AND PADS ON.HAD THE STEERING REPLACE.

Chevrolet impala's are junk. My sister mother and me all have impala's. My mother is now without transportation because her transmission is gone. My sisters impala's transmission slips at 70000 miles. My car has just started acting up and I am trying to drive it as little as possible. I still owe 2 more years of monthly payments. We all bought these cars because we thought the impala was a safe dependable car. It is sickening that we have wasted so much money.

I think its ridiculous that I purchased this 2004 cheverolet impala brand new in hopes of having reliable transportation for me and my kids. Unfortunately I would have done better buying at a car auction with all the problems I have had out of this car...to name a few, speedometer stoppeed working under warrenty, alternator went out, gas gadge stopped working and now my transmission is slipping and getting worse by the day! I am told I will have to get it replaced to fix the problem but after reading all the same complaints about the same problem I don't even want to waste my money on replacing it with another transmission that may give out in another 2 or 3 years. I will NEVER buy another Chevrolet or american made car...I am highly dissappointed and I can't believe they haven't done a recall on this issue. A transmission that can't even last 100,000 miles. UNREAL!

I purchased my 2004 Impala used with an extended warranty, almost immediately I had problems with skipping, jumping while in park, and slipping. I brought to the dealer 3 times to be repaired and the vehicle would be fine for a little while but the problem kept coming back. I have contacted GM regarding my concerns and they have refused to help with the trouble. I was forced to contact my local Better Business Bureau and have received immediate response from GM, but still no resolution. I urge any and all who's problems are being ignored to file complaints with the BBB they can ignore one person but several have a louder voice. The BBB is online and takes about 5 minutes to file a formal complaint. If we don't stand up we are all going to be pushing our Impalas in the breakdown lane.

I am very disturbed yet quietly assured I am justified for this complaint I have with my 2004 Chevy Impala. I noticed about a year ago or so my chevy Impala began doing this slipping thing when coming to a stop and accelerating to first gear with my automatic transmission. I told my mechanic that does all the work to this car since I purchased it in 2006. They took a look at the transmission and they stated that the transmission will be need to be replaced at cost of about $2400 oh now that made me really happy since I am still currently making payments on this car and would like to get rid of it but do not feel confident about trying to get rid of it in this lemon condition. When I started doing my research I was pleasantly surprised that I am not the only one that is reporting this condition with the transmission and than I noticed complaints on the insturment cluster with the spedometer not working at times now I am convinced I purchased a lemon. GM must of thought how can we really ruin our image with this car because this car is a definetly a car or model I would never recomend to the public. What a peice for the transmission.
Well I am writing a letter directly to GM right now and if that does not do it I will start investigating myself to this problem. I mentioned this problem to a freind of mine that lives by me and he just kind of laughed to me and stated him and his wife used to have one and at 80,000 miles the Impala started doing this. They were lucky enough to get rid of it and it did not act up at the dealer ship the day they traded it in. So how many Impalas are out there like this with people doing this, I find it highly intresting to know the real numbers on the 2004 Chevy Impala. Come on GM we bailed you guys out you better do something about this or you are going to lose even more.

Transmission slips when at a stop and shifts pretty hard. This seems to be an issue with all 2004 Impala SS models...Just recall it and fix it. GM knows its a crap part so just do the right ting and fix it!!!!!
