Jul 212019

Silverado 1500

  • 31,500 miles
Unexpected and intermittent loss of power brakes. Evident at slow speed (when backing). First application is normal, second brake application is power assist is reduced by half, third brake application has no power brake assist. Safety hazard when backing as unexpected loss of assist can damage equipment and cause injury.

Silverado 1500

  • 85,000 miles
We were driving in sevierville, tn in very busy tourist traffic going about 25 mph with 2 babies in the back and pulling a trailer with a polaris Ranger. When I went to hit the brakes, there was no movement of the brake pedal. I couldn't press it in unless I used 2 feet and applied hard pressure. Once the brakes were pushed all the way in, it used enough brake to come to a stop. The mechanic said we need a new vacuum pump and brake pads. This could have been much worse if we would have made it to the interstate.

Silverado 1500

  • 108,000 miles
At low speeds of 15mph or less, when brakes are applied, the vehicles brake assist stops working and the electric to the car flashes off. If speeds are low enough and you apply brakes while turning right at a light or stop sign, the vehicle will shutoff and steering wheel locks. This is a huge safety issue and poor design.

Silverado 1500

Braking is very difficult when at low speeds to stop, it is nearly impossible. I have had many very close accidents where I have almost hit other vehicles due to not being able to stop properly. It is my understanding that this issue is due to the brake vacuum assist pump. This needs a recall!

problem #198

Jun 242019

Silverado 1500

  • 95,000 miles
My truck is showing signs of the defective vacuum pump. Problem was sparatic and noticed it shortly after purchasing the truck with 95,000 miles on it. Now at 105,000 miles it started happening more frequently so I researched it. Randomly at slow speeds like pulling into a parking spot or my driveway or easing up at a stop light in traffic the brakes lose all power assist. It feels like the ABS is kicking in and the truck just keeps rolling. It takes about all the force you can give to get the truck to stop. Will be bringing the truck into Chevy this weekend. Was hoping for a recall before I had to dish out the money since it does seem to be an extremely unsafe premature brake system failure with no warning until the truck does not stop.

Brake assist vacuum pump fails. Special bulletin issues with warranty extension. What GM is failing to tell people, braking does not simply become difficult at low speeds, brakes fail at normal speeds. Vehicle in motion at highway speeds, eventually able to get it stopped after extreme extension of normal braking distance. After suggested warranty repair I continue to experience intermittent issues.

Silverado 1500

  • 35,700 miles
I was entering a structure parking at low speed when I needed to stop to give the right of way for cross traffic, at this time I proceeded to put my foot on the brake and the brake would not allow me to stop. (the brake pedal became stiff and it would not allow me to press it down). Luckily I did not strike the vehicle crossing and at this point I was using my emergency brake. I further realized my truck was no longer stopping on demand, but more of rolling to a stop. I contacted a local dealer and they said they couldn't help me because they were busy which I think is unaccepatable I would have to wait over a week to take my truck in for this service. Brake failure should be a priority for any automotive dealer.my truck has about 33500 miles and I have maintained and serviced it properly.

problem #190

Dec 072018

Silverado 1500

  • 70,000 miles
On several occasions the brakes stopped working correctly. The brake pedal became extremely difficult to push down and would not stop the truck within the normally expected stopping distance. Most of the time the brakes worked perfectly fine - this issue seemed to happen randomly, but after it happened enough times I realized it was only happening at slow speeds. It happened to me in a couple parking lots, the drive-thru at mcdonalds, and while backing up a trailer. These incidents were separated by many months, with the brakes fine in between. It wasn't until I received the service bulletin letter from Chevy that I fully realized what was going on. I immediately took the truck in for service and the technician was able to verify the problem. They replaced the vacuum pump and the brakes have been fine since. Chevy would not cover the cost because I was beyond their 72,000 mile limit (although the problem first started before I was at that mileage), so I paid $561 out of pocket to have the new pump installed. I feel this is a serious safety issue that should be addressed with a recall. I realized the seriousness of it the last time it happened to me which was when I was backing up the trailer for my kids boy scout troop and found myself unable to stop quickly. I had to leave the trailer where I got it to stop instead of where we were trying to place it.
