I have a 2002 Ram 1500 van. Without any warning the engine shuts off. Fuel gauge drops to empty. Engine cranks but does not start/ Then for no reason the gauge returns to normal and engine will start. Nothing I do will recreate or fix the problem. HELP!

I am the sole owner of a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. I have adhered to the required maintenance schedule defined by Dodge... oil changes, transmission service, air filters etc. I had my oil changed 9/27/14 at the same service shop I always use and on 9/29/14 my engine stalled 4 different times in a two hour period while I was driving down the road. I was able to put the truck in neutral and restart the engine while maintaining control (by the hardest without power steering). Thankfully I was not in a turning situation or I might have been toast! After reading some postings on this site about sludge being a possible contributor I now have to wonder if I am experiencing a similar situation. I have not dropped the pan to inspect the internal oil condition but the dipstick oil looks brand new! No signs of any kind of sludge are visible. I am not hearing any unusual noises coming from the engine and all gauges indicate normal operational limits. A good friend of mine had the same year Dodge as me and his engine burned up (he did not change his oil regularly and had poor maintenance habits). His truck did not stall while driving though, his just burned up! If I can determine what the root cause is for my current problem I will repost and advise.
