Ram 1500 8-cyl

  • 141,000 miles
At approximately 35 mph my driveline dislodged from my rear differential and locked up the wheels (differential.). the road was a popular well maintained paved road. Fortunately no cars or pedestrians were close by and speed was relatively low, otherwise this could have ended with serious injury or fatality. In addition to the recent incident with the differential, I have experienced other issues with this Ram: -new engine after cracking both heads while driving down the freeway (it gets serviced regularly and doesn't tow often). -idle has sudden surges at a stop. -transmission skipping gears.

Ram 1500 4WD 8-cyl

  • 118,850 miles
My son was pulling his truck out from an intersection and was fortunately only going 20-30 mph at the time and the rear axle seized up causing the drive shaft to completely disconnect and fall off. The truck was completely immovable for almost an hour. He and a friend were finally able to push it backwards off of the road into a parking lot. We incurred a $100 towing bill, plus over $4000 in repairs. He was very lucky that this occurred when it did and not while going faster in a more populated area.

Ram 1500 4WD 8-cyl

  • 71,035 miles
Started 2005 Ram 1500 and went up slight incline (30 degree) over a speed bump on road and traveled approximately 50 feet and the truck would not move. Put on brake to stop going backwards down the incline. Put into reverse still would not move, tried all forward gears 1st, 2nd, drive still would not move. Went onto internet to search for any similar complaints and found that other owners had found the transmission filter becoming loose caused their problem. We changed the 2 filters in transmission and replaced 8 quarts of atf4+ fluid. The engine light came on when started, but truck did move after it warmed up several minutes. Engine light went out after a few start ups and trips, seems to work alright at present time.

Recall P77 my main problem with this is that if the pinion has become loose the gears are not lined up correctly anymore and causes extreme wear on the differential unit and will cause it to lock up. I called the manufacturer regarding this yesterday and they told me to talk to the service manager at my dealership. Today I went in to speak with him. I requested that he check the torque on my pinion nut "I have nobody here that is available to do that today" he stated. I then asked him when he would have somebody in to check it, "maybe Tuesday or Thursday when did you want it checked". "today" I stated. Following that he took down my VIN number went over to the computer came back and told me that there is no remedy for the problem right now and to contact the manufacturer. Which I then advised him that I spoke with them yesterday and they told me to talk to my service manager. He stated that there is nothing he can do to my vehicle without Chrysler providing the proper remedy. If Chrysler does find that the nut is loose are they planning on replacing the ring and pinion since when this item is not properly installed it wears unevenly and can lock up. Chrysler also stated that they cannot verify if I will be reimbursed if I take this to a 3rd party repair shop to have this properly corrected, since the only people that seem to be able to correct this issue is a 3rd party repair shop. I am left with a choice of paying out of pocket for the repair to be assured that I am driving a safe vehicle with no guarantee that I will be compensated for my expenses, waiting for the parts to available and drive a vehicle that may or may not lock up the rear wheels without notice, or having a repair that may not meet your standards since I have not found out what the remedy is if the torque rating is under the specified 200lbs. That is my concern.

While driving my truck, I heard a whining noise coming from the rear, and then I felt my drive shaft disengage from the differential (rear axle pinion nut recall P77/NHTSA 14V-796) and drop to the street. Currently, there is no permanent remedy for this condition. The dealer (cumerland auto center, cookeville, tn) could repair the vehicle, but the same thing could happen again, and I would have to pay for the repairs twice (once without remedy and once with remedy) and get reimbursed later by fca customer assistance, Washington, DC. I only have one other vehicle in my family to use, and the recall doesn't pay for a rental. My vehicle also requires repair for P81 (air bags).

  • 148,841 miles
I heard an unusual noise, kind of a rattle and vibrating sound. It continued to get louder for about an 8th of a mile. I began to move toward the right lane of traffic to exit the main road. The noise became extremely loud and there was a grinding sound. Almost immediately there was a loud crashing thud occurred and the truck jarred to an immediate stop. After looking underneath I saw that the whole drive shaft was disconnected from the rear and fluid was spilling on the ground. The tow driver said he'd not seen anything like this happen. Our mechanic came by our place took a look at it and told us about the problem with the rear of this make and model. The pinion nut fell off or vibrated loose. We couldn't understand what could possibly have happened, then it all made sense when we found the recall and investigation information.

The rear end has been howling under power and on coast. Seen a lot of reports that the rear end locks up, possible causing loss of control or the vehicle. Heard there was a recall on this but it looks like it doesn't start till Feb. 13, 2015. Can you shed any light on this, I would love to know where I stand on trying to get this fixed. I don't believe the truck rear end will last that long. Thank you
