Ram 1500 Big Horn SLT

  • Automatic transmission
  • 92,683 miles

At 92683 miles I lost my first motor; it threw a rod on a trip from NM to Mass. There was never any warning according to the gauges that my truck was hot or low on oil. The oil was gone! I had my oil changed pretty much like clock work and I've been the sole owner of the truck. This happened in November, 2010; I had the motor replaced for 7,000. In January 2011, I thought I heard the lifters; I had the oil checked and it was 4 quarts low. I had seen the second motor smoke once. The oil had been changed once since it was new; only 2.5 months old. I brought it to the dealership and told them what happened. They put dye in the motor and said to bring it back after 100 miles to look for leaks with a black light. No leaks. I was told to bring it back after 1000 miles and that I should expect to lose a quart of oil for every 1000 miles. I brought it back; no leaks but 2 quarts low. I had the oil changed. I was told to bring it back after 1500 miles. I've been watching it smoke for the past few days and it's making noises under my left foot; exactly where it threw the first rod. I refuse to believe that my oil is "disappearing" and that I need to carry oil around. I'm not waiting for 1500 miles this time.
