Purchased 2006 Dodge from my brother in law who lives in west texas in September 2011. The truck was meticulously maintained prior to me buying it, but was used on a ranch where the vehicle would have seen a little off-road action. After about two months of owning it i noticed the front end was shaking on the highway and that there was an occasional knocking from the front end. Being an amature mechanic, i lifted up the whole front end of the vehicle and allowed the front wheels to hang and then grabbed the wheels to make sure that everything was good and tight. Well the front left tire felt very solid and would move the steering rack and wheel easliy. But the right tire had free play in its movement before moving the rack and wheel. I then got under the truck and noticed that the steering tie rod for that side of the truck had about 1/4" play in it where the rod goes into the rack. needless to say all you can do then is replace the rack. Dodge Service wanted about 950 for the job, but i took it to a local mechanic for 475 to replace the rack and 125 for alignment and balance tires. Now we're all good.

Well it looks like it's nothing new for dodge owners to be paying a couple extra thousand each year.
Listen up Dodge: you have a problem with the steering rack/ pump assembly in your pickups. They are failing repeatedly.
This will be my first and only fix as i am taking the vehicle in when the lease runs out.
And to any Canadians looking on here, the steering rack alone will cost you in the neighborhood $720 if you buy from the dealer, just look online please they are only worth around $200.
My last Dodge!

purchased a 2006 dodge ram 1500 4x4 hemi, very nice shape, nice looking truck, 36,000 miles from vandaver auto in ohio. 3 weeks after getting it home rack steering went out, (have extended warranty on it)., called warranty got approval to take to local garage, replaced rack, last 2 weeks went out again, replaced rack, pump, lines, reservoir. Went out again, took it to local dealership. replaced with dodge rack, went out again, replaced pump, lines & reservoir again with all dodge parts, went out again, took to local dodge dealer, they replaced it and told me if i didn't remove 33 inch tires and 2"spacers and rack went out again they would not warranty it, spent $1,100.00 for new tires ( spec's). lasted 4 weeks, rack went out again, took it to another dodge dealer (very good dealership), replaced rack, paid $175.00 to have everything pressure tested, they drove truck for 2 weeks, and guess what, HAVE JUST WASTED THE 10TH RACK, Truck is now back at the garage, with service manager scratching his head. With no help from Vandaver Auto (NO SATISFACTION), DEADBEAT DEALER, who claims they give 100% drive drain warranty. I am stuck, my next step is to call the bank and tell them to come get it, if i cant drive it, I am not paying for it. Will never buy a dodge again, new or used. EVER!!!!!!!!
