When switching into 4x4 the light just flashes. I can hear it trying to switch but will not engage. Driving here in Canada in the winter with no 4x4 is going to suck!!! I might as well buy a Vette for winter driving!!!!

2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie trim. 4WD light started flashing, instrument panel lights oscillating. Eventually the truck would not even turn over. Towed to dealer. They replaced the TIPM board. Drove off the lot and immediately back again as the 4WD was not working. Now a new 4WD actuator. Problem reoccurs at least once yearly.
To date I have had 3 instrument clusters, 3 - 4WD actuators, 3 - TIPM or total integrated power modules. Has now died for the 4th time. This truck has a total of 75,000 km's and is totally unreliable as once the TIPM board dies the truck is dead.
Being quite familiar with mechanics I took the actuator apart by grinding off the aluminum rivets. Amazing, about 5/8" dia plastic gears and a electric motor about 1 - 1/4 in dia and 2" long. Have seen more rugged items in a meccano set. Phoned the dealer here in Prince George and the actuator P/N 52114387AF sells for $280.00. Bought one in the USA for $127.00 plus $43.00 for international freight. Took the TIPM out of the truck and disassembled to look at the IC's. None fired this time. A new TIPM is $1200.00 at the dealer. When the TIPM dies it fries 2 IC's on the board that have a cost under 5 bucks.
Unfortunately Dodge dealers fix nothing. The faulty parts are replaced and the root cause of the problem is never solved. After looking at the shifting ring the actuator moves I believe the issue is spline misalignment. Try to ever get that as the root cause from a Dealer?
I only wish I could find a good 70's Chev truck with a manual transmission, manual front hubs, and mechanical linkage to the transfer case.
There will be no more Dodge products in my life.

Bought my 2007 Dodge Ram Laramie used in August 2010. In the winter of 2011 I had some trouble engaging the 4x4 off and on. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it would not. It eventually failed completely. When in Auto 4WD it would just flash when trying to go to 4 Hi and then stay in Auto 4WD. Same system for every mode I tried. Only problem is it was not really in Auto either! I was fish tailing and sliding all over the place. Getting stuck on tiny little inclines that FWD vehicles were driving up. Very embarrassing and very dangerous! I took it in in January of 2012, and it turned out it was the Actuator. It was replaced and everything worked again. May 2012 my 4x4 quit again. They replaced the Actuator again, but afterwards ran some more tests and said the Actuator was failing because of a problem with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). The Actuator was replaced for free (still under warranty from the first repair) but the TIPM cost me another $1700!! Everything was good until now. The worst snow storm to strike Southern Alberta in years and I'm half way home and ding, the Service FWD light comes on. When I left Fernie the roads were getting a little slick so I put it in 4 High. Further down the road, the roads got better, so I switched back to Auto (slowing down to 80km before shifting). Just when they started to get really slick is when it failed, before I could go back to 4 High. I tried and it would just flash and go back to 4 Auto. I new within minutes that it was not engaged at all when I fish tailed into oncoming traffic and was able to get it back into my lane before being struck. So I limped along until Clairseholm with no 4WD on the iciest roads ever!!!! We almost died no less then a dozen times. I was furious. I need a reliable vehicle!!! I drive through mountain passes in the winter 2-3 times/month. Come on Dodge, fix this!!! I have the truck booked into the shop again for tomorrow. I am into this thing for $2400 in 14 months, and still have the same problem. I am not impressed. Does anybody have a resolution that actually worked, and has continued to work for several years since?

I just bought this 2007 dodge ram slt big horn edition and was stocked. Right up until I went hunting and got stuck in some mud that probably wasn't a foot deep. At first I thought my driving skills were sleeping, until two days later when it happened again while backing into my yard in some wet grass on a incline and again. After reading the reviews on this, I'm glad to finally understand what's wrong but that still doesn't fix the problem. As a logger, I need my 4 wheel drive to work in the winter and hunting season! This is BS! Dodge has really disappointed me!

I have encountered the same problem as many other Dodge Ram 1500 owners with the failure of the 4 wheel drive actuator motor which modulates the vichicle between 2 wheel drive, auto 4 wheel, and full time 4wheel drive.
A simple search on the internet indicates the scope of this problem and it there should be a recall as several individuals have indicated that it has caused them to have a serious accident.
The lights on my dash indicted that the truck is in 4 wheel auto or 4 wheel drive and although the front axel is engaged power is not being sent to the front wheels. When trying to get it into 2 wheel drive by turning the control knob inside the truck the 4 wheel drive light just flashes and flashes and then evetually the 4 wheel light comes on which is suppose to indicate that it is in 4 wheel drive....but it is not.
Truck owners in Canada should be sure to call the Chrysler Customer Care Center 1-800-456-2001 and register their complaint, be sure to get a file number as this ensures that your issue is registerd, as well as complete the Defect Complaint Form on the Transport Canada website https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/PCDB-BDPP/fc-cp.aspx?lang=eng as only by registering this issue will they be forced to provide extended warrenty or a recall.

Great truck until the 4 wheel drive system wouldn't disengage, I took it to the dealer and they told me that the servo motor that engages the 4 wheel drive system burnt out and shorted out the CPU module that controls the motor. I have read a few issues on different sites that this is common. Should be recall on this issue too many complaints from what I have read.
Can anything be done besides sucking the money out of the owners pockets.

Since I bought the truck new in June of 07, I have had the 4 wheel drive go out in Feb 08,09,10. Three years straight.

Took truck in for lack of 4WD in 4WD Auto(truck went sideways with out either 4WD coming on or traction control activating). Service manager explained that 4WD Auto needed time to react. This would explain the 4WD issue, but not why traction control failed to operate when under other conditions, it comes on while turning a corner but not as intended. Since then, I have noticed intermittent issues while in full time 4WD. Sometimes the truck stays in 2WD when 4WD is selected and the 4WD light is illuminated. This is proven by the back wheels spinning in a snow covered parking lot and the front tires not turning when stuck. Selecting 2WD, waiting for the 4WD indicator to go out, then re selecting 4WD will it work most of the time. Repeating the 2WD to 4WD selection process will eventually correct the problem. This is a minor annoyance when in the parking lot, but a dangerous problem when shifting on the fly at any speed as the problem has occurred. I have had to pull over on 2 occasions to get the truck into 4WD by switching from 2WD to 4WD. This is not an error on my part as I have owned 4 other 4WD vehicles prior and not had this issue.

we have a 2007 dodge ram hemi pick up truck. I have put money out to fix the 4x4. got it on and the light is still flashing and doesn't go into 4x4. this has been upsetting for me as we live in the country on a mountain and in the winter the roads are pretty bad. I cant keep putting money into it I have try to call and see if this was a recall as going on line there are a lot of people with the same thing. I also went on line to see if there was a wire that might not be connect but cant seem to find out anything without people asking for money to help ...help me
