I have a 2008 Dodge Ram Big horn Edition with the 5.7 Hemi. In getting my tires rotated a few weeks ago I was told that my rack and pinion seal was leaking and was quoted a price of just under $900.00. I nearly fell over. I came home, weekend ruined after that news and looked online to find that other Dodge owners have had the same issue with either an 2004 or 2008 Ram truck. I called my local Dodge dealership and explained that I had 45,00 miles on the truck and my warranty was now up and that I had seen a number of consumer complaints about this issue with other Dodge trucks. I asked for a corporate number, which I was given and I called and was given a case number and asked to take the truck to my local Dodge deal to have the rack and pinion checked. I did this and between my local dealer and corporate Dodge they agreed to replace the part for $100.00 deductible. Dodge needs to issue a recall on this part but I was happy with paying $100.00 in comparison to $900.00 to replace the part whereas I had read where other Dodge owners have had to do. I appreciate the service manager at the local dealership for his help and Dodge for at least trying to make it right.

Original correspondence with Chrysler Corp. Many people have had this problem with the 2004 and 2008 Dodge rack and pinion assembly. My 2008 truck has very low mileage 18,600 and has had all scheduled maintenance with Dodge service center. but as soon as something like this happens nobody wants to talk with you anymore. Who would expect that rack and pinion would fail with such low mileage
Dear Alan:
Thank you for contacting the Ram Assistance Center.
We appreciate the time and effort you took to tell us of your dissatisfaction in the rack and pinion in your 2008 Ram 1500. We have documented your comments and will provide them to our product development team for review.
We have reviewed the service history with Autoserv of Tilton Chrysler Jeep Dodge and found that this vehicle has not had a history of concerns with the power steering components. We fully appreciate your concern, particularly in view of the expense and inconvenience involved; however, we are unable to accommodate your request for out-of-warranty consideration. The vehicle has exceeded the time and mileage limitations of the warranty we offered on the vehicle at the time it was purchased. Although we are unable to provide a more favorable reply, we appreciate the opportunity to review your request.
Thank you again for taking the time to communicate with us. We're sorry we cannot provide a more favorable reply.
Sincerely,
Heather
