The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 60-65 on the highway, changing lanes, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the transmission unexpectedly downshifted from eighth gear to first gear. The vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The message to -??Service Immediately-?? was displayed and then turned off. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, and the computer was reset. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

The transmission in the car caused a complete loss of power. The car stopped in the middle of the street and was almost rear-ended. Our infant son was in the car at the time. We were very worried about our safety. The "see manual" warning light flashed on the screen. We had to place the car into neutral and was able to finally make it to a safe location.

Frequently when driving my 2020 Ford Expedition max the transmission slips out of gear causing it to go into neutral and put me in a position when i am unable to accelerate my vehicle. This happens mostly on the freeway when we are driving 65 MPH and greatly endangers the safety of my family. Reading several on-line forums indicates this is a common problem and should be fixed via a recall. Also, my dashboard viewing screen often turns black for no reason when using or simply does not turn on.

While driving in the city or on the highway when accelerating, the car will lose power almost like it shifted to neutral - pressing the gas does not do anything then all of a sudden the expedition will rapidly catch gear causing the car to jerk all of the passengers. It is very unsafe and we have almost been rear ended due to this. It is extremely unsafe and scary. I notice it happening frequently on the highway if you accelerate to enter the highway or to pass another vehicle but have also noticed it in the city at lower speeds. Almost every time in 4th gear and 7-8th gear on the ten speed automatic 2020 ford expedition. I took it to ford where they said there were no recalls. When this happens a lot of pop ups on the dash board pop up and then quickly go away. Service transmission. Service powertrain. Loss in power. Just to name a few.

The transmission slipped out upon acceleration. I was trying to move out of the way of emergency vehicles when the transmission lost all gear numbers and "Service Transmission" popped up on the screen. I depressed the accelerator and the transmission went to gear 1 and then went back to the appropriate gear number 5. This has been happening now for over 2 years off and on. I tried to have the dealer diagnosis it before 60,000 and they couldn't find anything wrong. I have talked to multiple people who have expeditions as well and they are experiencing the same issue.

We have experienced the problems of bad shifting, error codes, sudden deceleration, lack of acceleration and the vehicle going into "limp mode" over the past three years. These events have been extremely dangerous as they have occurred at highway speed multiple times and have occurred while towing a boat. We had taken it into the dealer in in September of 2022 and the dealer claimed they could not find a problem. It should be noted that the vehicle was under warranty at the time. We continued to experience the problems and took it to a different Ford dealer last week and they found the problem and stated the vehicle was subject to a TSB about the transmission and said the transmission must be replaced. And it was not covered by warranty or recall. I have researched the issue and there are hundreds of complaints about Ford's 10 speed transmission having problems. This is a dangerous problem and Ford is aware of it and will not take responsibility.

I have experienced on multiple occasions when driving that the transmission doesn-??t know what gear to go to when shifting. If I accelerate and have to let off the gas because traffic is slowing down and they start going again the transmission doesn-??t know what to do and no matter how far you push the pedal the engine doesn-??t do nothing. The transmission doesn-??t kick in and you have to go to the side praying you don-??t get hit before it-??ll go into gear. This has happened while merging on the interstate and regular traffic and I took it to Ford and they told me it was normal. To me this does not seem normal imposes a severe safety risk.

The ten speed transmission that is standard on Ford vehicles of this caliber, has begun to skip gears. There appears to be a delay in switching from fifth gear to seventh gear. The exact same problem occurred on our last 2018 expedition max to the point the transmission was nearly inoperable. This ultimately led to a replacement of the transmission costing $6000. The vehicle became undrivable at that time due to potential hazard of driving and warnings from our mechanic. Our current vehicle has not yet been evaluated by Ford mechanics. The same symptomatic changes are occurring on this car as did the last. The car will go to the mechanics in short order. There is concern that there is a faulty transmission being manufactured due to the same problem occurring in the same make, and model of vehicle only two years apart.

Expedition

  • 20,000 miles
The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 70-75 MPH, the transmission was shifting hard and unintendedly shifted to various gears continuously. The power train warning light was illuminated. The message "Power Train - Engine Failure - See Owner-??s Manual" was displayed. Additionally, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from the transmission assembly. The message "Reduced Engine Power-?? was displayed, and the vehicle failed to respond upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The temperature gauge displayed 285 degrees. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road and allowed the vehicle to cool down. The contact was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the transmission yoke was replaced; however, the failure recurred several times while driving. The vehicle was taken to Red McCombs Ford (8333 I-10, San Antonio, TX 78230) and to Griffith Ford Seguin (1880 I-10, Seguin, TX 78155); where the transmission was replaced and rebuilt several times; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the transmission was shifting hard and was continuously shifting from high gear to low gear. The check engine warning light and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. Another driver honked and drew the contact's attention. The contact noticed a trail of white smoke and that there was smoke coming from the engine bay. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road and allowed the vehicle to cool down. The vehicle was taken back to the first dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could no longer assist in covering the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

Transmission jerks. Also transmission randomly drops out of gear at 60-65 m/h which make the vehicle stall.Putting passengers dangerous situations on highway.Very dangerous.Car been in shop twice but no adequate repairs been made.Requested transmission exchange which would take care of problem.Request been denied.Putting my wife and two of my children in danger. This car has 10R80 transmission which notoriously has bad reputation.Mechanic claims could not create issue but however does see some problem with the transmission.

I read that there is a recall on 2021/2022 Fords with Eco Boost but not the 2020. I have had my vehicle into the dealership multiple times due to misfires and loss of all power which has almost caused multiple accidents on the interstate. I accelerate to get into the left lane and lose all power and do not get power back until my vehicle decelerates down to around 40 mph/or a lower gear, causing semi-??s and other vehicles to have to slam on their brakes so that they do no run into the back of me. It idles very roughly and overall has been the worst vehicle mechanically that I have ever owned. The dealerships always say they cannot find anything wrong with it or cannot reproduce it but it happens on a daily basis and keeps getting worse. I have had the transmission updated, changed the cool packs, and changed the plugs which has not helped at all. I want to know why the 2020 Expedition is not included in this recall? This is the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased and I would expect it to run smoothly with no issues and I am very disappointed. Not only disappointed in the vehicle, but in Ford itself for not acknowledging this issue. I have read many complaints from other customers experiencing the same issues and unable to find a fix for it. I would like some answers and for Ford to make things right with my Expedition. I am not able to trade it in or sell it due to having all the issues that it has and frankly I-??m not sure I trust Ford anymore or if I-??ll ever buy a Ford product again and we have been faithful Ford owners for years. Thank you for your time and I-??ll be looking forward to hearing back from you soon regarding this issue. This has happened many times throughout my ownership of the vehicle. At times, when trying to accelerate into traffic, changing lanes, etc. The vehicle make a loud clunking noise when it tries to downshift. The transmission acts as if it has no idea what gear to go into. A "system fault" with a wrench appears on the center display along with an audible alarm. The vehicle either loses power altogether or it has downshifted into an extremely low gear which brings the rpms near redline. On several occasions this has put my family in dangerous situations. We came close to getting in a collision more than once. It has frightened my daughter who has special needs. Upon bringing it to ford while the warranty was still in place, they claim they could not replicate the problem. On the way back home from the dealer, it happened again. We made ANOTHER appointment for service, they reflashed the transmission strategy and said it's fixed. It was ok for maybe a few weeks, but the problem continues. Now the warranty is up, and we are still stuck with the same issue which is becoming more and more frequent. Ford will not repair it without charging, yet this issue existed while the warranty was still in place. It's a known defect that presented itself while the warranty was still in place. It was never repaired, Ford only applied a band-aid to get past the powertrain warranty.

Driving at non-highway speeds on roads with hills, the vehicle aggressively downshifts occasionally. It isn't all the time, and it is difficult to duplicate, but it feels rough. I believe a TSB has been issued for this issue. It is well documented and should be recalled, as the known issue was repaired in the 2024 model.
