Explorer Platinum 3.0L Ecoboost V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,821 miles

I had just purchased the used vehicle and subsequently noticed the driver's seat lower left side trim was hanging down. Brought it to the dealer & they fixed it. No trouble with it, over 1.5 years now.

Explorer ST V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,000 miles

I took delivery of my ST, new, in late February of 2020. When I got home I noticed a piece of plastic on the floor under drivers seat. I was unable to find where it came from, but I saved it just in case. A few months later, while on a road trip, I noticed the plastic trim on the outside of the driver's seat was flopping away from the seat, making the seat controls awkward to use. When I got home, I took it to a dealer and was told that Ford did not cover “breakage” caused by people sliding in and out of the seat. I took it with a grain of salt but since I was sure that piece of plastic I found was indicative of the seat being broken somehow - when I took delivery, I ordered and paid for a new seat trim. The dealer swapped out the switches, etc. and sent me on my way.

Now it is Oct. 2021, and as I was leaving on a road trip, I noticed the trim piece was again starting to pull away! Understand I have had several SUVs from Mercedes, Chevrolet, and Jeep, as well as pickups and numerous cars dating back to the 60’s, and never have had this happen ever. Interestingly, I called the dealer for an appointment when I get home and service transferred me to parts. When I gave parts my VIN he shortly came back with “oh I have that in stock”. No dealer keeps an inventory of a part that is expected to never be called for. This leads me to believe that this not a rare occurrence!

There is definitely something wrong with this seat! People of the same size as me have been getting in and out of the passenger side using the same normal method as me with no problem all along. It's interesting also is that on the passenger side, when the seat is all the way down there is a finger clearance between the trim and seat rail. There is no clearance on the driver's side. To suggest this is caused by people sliding out of the seat is nonsense. This must be fixed once and for all if I am to keep this car. I suggest the seat structure must be moved slightly outboard of the tracks to give the trim clearance as the seat goes down.
