On my 1995 Ford F-150 P/U truck, there is a clutch linkage rod which goes through the neutral safety switch and impacts/interacts with the clutch master cylinder. This part endures wear each time the clutch pedal is depressed. As such, the plastic end of this rod and the plastic snap/bushing/lock that is part of it also wears since they are in contact with a linkage rod with considerable force. When the wear becomes excessive, the snap ring/bushing/female rod end fail and slip or break off causing the clutch to engage the transmission at whatever gear is engaged at that time.
