The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. While parked, the contact noticed a fuel odor. After inspecting the vehicle the contact noticed that the rear fuel tank strap was corroded and caused a fracture in the fuel tank, causing fuel to leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician advised that the vehicle was included in the recall under NHTSA campaign id number: 11V385000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting) but the recall would only cover the fuel strap replacement and not the fuel tank. The dealer refused to perform the recall repairs due to rust on the mounting hooks for the straps. The dealer stated that they would have to weld the mounting hooks. The contact did not call the manufacturer and the vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was a serious safety issue that could lead to a crash. The failure mileage was 140,000.

The two remaining fuel tank straps were experiencing corrosion as well, but were not fractured. The contact expressed concern because only the fractured strap was replaced under the recall. The contact was informed that according to the recall, they were only obligated to replace the fractured strap. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they would only replaced the strap which fractured. The contact also stated that the rear leaf springs fractured and pierced through the truck bed due to corrosion. In addition, the frame under the front driver side also exhibited rust and corrosion. The failure mileage was 175,000.

Gas tank straps broke and gas tank dropped onto skid plate and wore a hole into the gas tank causing fuel to leak. Took the truck to a Ford dealer in town and they ran the VIN number and said it was covered. Four weeks later was told that Ford declined to fix because the truck had a skid plate. Call Ford customer service and was told that the skid plate was there to hold up the gas tank. Seems if a skid plate was there to hold up the tank why is there straps?

The dealer contacted the manufacturer who confirmed that they will not assist with repairs to the vehicle because the specific part that had failed was not included in the recall. While the vehicle was traveling on a level, paved two-lane rural road, the front fuel tank storage mounting strap broke. The front of the fuel tank dropped down and came in contact with the road surface causing it to be dragged. The tank was pushed backwards and it broke off the brake line to the rear axle creating a loss of braking ability. The vehicle coasted to a stop and it was found that the fuel tank was punctured where it had dragged on the pavement, causing a loss of approximately fifteen gallons of gasoline on the surface of the road. The local Ford dealer was contacted and it was determined that the dealer did not have the parts required for the repair. The Ford dealer advised to have the vehicle towed to a non-Ford repair facility, have it repaired and the cost would be reimbursed by Ford.

Upon hearing of gas tank strap recall for my Ford pickup I decided to take a quick look at mine to see if either one was cracked. Once under the truck I smelled gas. A leak appears to be originating from around the innermost strap. Will Ford repair the leaking gas tanks with the recall?

While driving down the highway at 65 mph the strap that holds the gas tank in place broke. By the time we got to a safe place to pull over, the gas tank had a large hole in it from scraping on the road & 20+ gallons of gasoline was running out beneath our vehicle. We were extremely lucky there was no fire. We had to pay $240 for a flatbed to get the vehicle back home & another $500 to put on a new gas tank & new straps. Not to mention the $65 in gas that poured out on the road. I think a warning from Ford would have saved us from what easily could have ended in disaster.

I have been told that there is a recall from Ford but when I took my truck to the Ford dealer I was told that if a recall was on the news that it many be a year before the recall letters are mailed. Is this true? I worry because how many people may lose their lives over the year it takes to get the letters mailed out...

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 70 mph, the fuel tank detached and began to drag onto the ground. The vehicle was driven to the side of the road. The contact noticed both fuel tank straps fractured as a result of rust; however there was no fuel leaking. The fuel tank was temporarily repaired with a strong rope. The failure was not diagnosed or permanently repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000. The VIN was unavailable.
