Was driving my 1998 Ford F-150 and over heard a scraping noise. I had just had the drums on my truck serviced and thought one of them may have seized so I pulled into a parking lot only to find 2 of the straps supporting the gas tank broke off disposing a full gas tank over a church parking lot and down a stretch of road. I have been notified by my insurer that a claim of almost 10000 dollars has been submitted from the city for clean up and the church to re-pave the driveway therefore upping my insurance almost 400$ a year and staining my record for up to 6 years! this is completely unfair that Ford can get away with making such a shoddy product and I cant help but feel that they are responsible for this incident and that I should be at no fault. I have since sold the death trap truck.

I was driving at approximately 40 mph on a smooth, paved road, when the two straps that support the vehicle fuel tank broke, and the tank fell to the road. I immediately pulled off the main road and investigated. The rear of the tank was still attached to the frame by a plastic cradle, but the front end had contacted the road and ploughed along for about 100 feet. There was a dent in the tank and some wear, but no apparent leaks. The fuel lines and filler hose remained intact and attached. I temporarily winched the tank up with a ratchet strap to get home, and have since replaced the faulty straps with new ones.

Driving 1998 Ford F-150 4 X 4 truck on dry, flat, smooth asphalt surface road at 45 mph when I noticed a loud metallic sound. Pulled off road immediately and noticed strong odor of gasoline. Looked under vehicle and observed front end of gas tank was on the ground, leaking gas profusely. Turned off engine and immediately called 9-1-1 because of fire potential. Fire, ems, and local sheriff responded. Front gas tank mounting strap failed, causing tank to land on pavement, rupturing fuel tank with resultant gasoline spill, contained by fire department. Gas tank removed by fire department, truck towed for repairs, approximated at $1,500 to replace damaged fuel tank, fuel pump, and mounting straps. Fire department reported to me that several occurrences with Ford F-150 fuel tank mounting strap failures have been reported. Updated 09/14/11 the consumer stated when the fuel tank fell to the ground, fuel began leaking. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop. The front strap broke on the left top portion due to corrosion. The consumer lost five gallons of gas. The repairs cost over $1000. Updated 09/21/11
