The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 40 mph, the contact heard a loud noise outside of the vehicle and maneuvered to the side of the road. He inspected the vehicle and noticed that both fuel tank straps were completely corroded due to rust, which caused the fuel tank to detach. There was a small amount of fuel leakage. The failure caused damage to the brake line. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

The contact stated that while having the starter replaced at a local repair shop the mechanic noticed the straps which held the fuel tank in place were severely rusted. The vehicle was then taken to an authorized dealer where the straps were replaced. The contact expressed concern over the straps possibly causing the fuel tank to detach from the vehicle. The contact had not notified the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 134,142.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F150. While driving approximately 35 mph the contact heard a thumping noise underneath the vehicle. The contact exit the vehicle, inspected it and noticed the fuel tank had detached from the underneath the vehicle. The fuel tank had a hole in it and there was approximately 20 gallons of fuel spilling out of the fuel tank. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop where the fuel tank, vent pressure sensor, fuel line and fuel tank strap were replaced which included repairing the wires. The contact was unable to confirm if the fuel tank strap was corroded. The vehicle was repaired. There was an open investigation under NHTSA action number EA11006 ( fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly:mounting fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting) which may be related to the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.
