While traveling on a city street, my truck suddenly downshifted into a lower gear (3rd) causing the truck to suddenly slow in traffic. Transmission would not change gear after that. If I had been traveling at a greater speed or on a highway it may have caused my truck to lock the wheels and my have caused an accident.

  • 91,000 miles
On 1 April 2017 at approximately 12:00 pm the vehicle was merging onto the highway when a loud thud was heard and the vehicle suddenly began to decelerate. The operator applied pressure to the gas pedal and noticed the rpms on the tachometer reach approximately 5K to 6K with no acceleration, as if the vehicle had shifted into neutral even though the console showed 6th gear. The operator removed pressure to the gas pedal and gradually reapplied pressure to the gas pedal but rpms again reached 5K to 6K with no acceleration. After approximately 10 to 15 seconds of coasting on the highway the vehicle regained normal acceleration. This seems to be a transmission issue that has the potential to result in a rear-end collision at highway speeds. The vehicle had approximately 91,000 miles and the weather was 36 F with mixed precipitation at the time of the incident. The operator notes that the vehicle's transmission was replaced at approximately 89,000 miles after previously reported NHTSA complaint number 10970618. The transmission had been serviced once subsequent to its replacement for a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd gear which was reportedly resolved by the dealership with a software update. Prior to this incident, the vehicle had still been experiencing the hard shift between 2nd and 3rd gear.

On 12 January 2017 when returning from a normal oil change and tire rotation at a dealership the operator heard what sounded like marbles in a coffee can coming from the transmission and the vehicle experienced erratic shifts and loss of power. These conditions were reported to and noted by the dealership's receptionist to be followed up on the next morning. On 13 January 2017 on the commute to work when accelerating from a stoplight on a city thoroughfare the vehicle downshifted abruptly from a high gear and shuddered to a halt in the middle of the roadway. The incident was so dramatic that the operator had assumed the driveshaft had been lost. The operator limped the vehicle into a nearby parking lot where the dashboard showed various warnings (see exhibit 1) and a towing company was called to Transport the vehicle to the dealership. The vehicle had approximately 89,000 miles and the weather was sunny and 42 F on 13 January 2017. The dealership diagnosed the issue as an internal failure by using codes P0763, P0764, and P0979, along with removing the transmission pan which showed fine metallic shavings (see exhibit 2); the transmission was replaced by the dealership. This transmission issue was fortunate to not have resulted in any injuries or additional damages which could have easily occurred.

My vehicle fits the exact description of a previous Ford recall for 2011 F-150 with an output speed sensor on the vehicle's transmission lead frame that needs replacement. Previously and before the issued recall, my vehicle abruptly downshifted, shut off, and would not restart. I had the vehicle towed to the Ford dealership where it was inspected and nothing was found wrong. They claimed that the computer just needed to be reset and were more than happy to charge for the incurred labor time. More recently, my F150 has failed to start on several occasions. After several repair attempts and a starter replacement, the Ford dealership now tells me it is the sensor on the vehicles lead frame and that the entire thing needs to be replaced. I searched for the issue and found the recall that matches my issues as well as my truck's make, model, year, transmission type, and manufacture location. However, my manufacture date fell a few months outside of the recall manufacture dates. Calls to Ford left me with 2 options: Pay roughly $1000 repair bill and wait for them to file the issue and get back to me or leave with an unsafe vehicle while the issue is resolved (hopefully).

According to the research I have done to this point the fist recall that I believe applies to this vehicle is tsb 13-6-8, and the 2nd is tsb 13-8-1. both of these symptoms are prevalent to my vehicle but Ford fails to act on this tsb and fails to make the necessary repairs that will remedy these issues. Once again this vehicle is now part of a field service action (15N05) for the electric vacuum pump, and will return the vehicle on 3/24/2017 to see if they will respond in this action, and once again bring these tsb's to there attention as previously done to see if they will repair the vehicle to an acceptable operating standard. If Ford fails to respond to the tsb's and to the field service actions, what are my options to see these repairs take place, and my vehicle is in a safe and proper working function?

Was driving at about 40mph when the vehicle suddenly dropped into 1st gear. The wrench light and check engine light came on. The speedometer did not work and had dashes displayed instead of numbers. After shutting the vehicle off for an hour, it was working fine after restarting. Check engine light recorded output sensor error.

Ngine was racing wide open with tachometer pegged way beyond the highest number listed. No warning, no check engine light, nothing. I was able to exit and stop in a park and ride lot and call my wife. I was extremely shaken and afraid to continue drive. She agreed to pick me up. I was able to limp back to my office at 15 mph but was scared to death. This had never happened before and only after a fix that was supposed to prevent this from happening. I believe damage may have been done to the rear-end, transmission and engine not to mention my hip and shoulder are sore and painful from the seat beat locking. It honestly felt like I had been rearended! I will not return to that dealer as I feel they will cover their mistake and not be honest about what damage was done to my vehicle based on their mistake. A complaint will be fled with Ford motor and the national highway transportation safety adminisratation as well as the consumer protection Agency. I have lost all confidence the truck and honestly feel I can never drive it again. I won't even drive it to a shop at this point. The recall fix caused this accident to happen and has caused damage to my vehicle. If the computer logs data I welcome an investigation to see what the computer says has happened.

Jan. 27, 2017 we were pulling away from a stop light got to around 40 mph and the vehicle down shifted out of gear making a lot of noise and started bucking. We could hardly get it to the side of the road as it would hardly move. We had not had any issues before this. It was not drivable. We had it towed to the local Ford dealership. In regard to recall 16S19 and 16N02, the vehicle did exactly what the recall stated in regard to the downshifting however as per the mechanic who repaired, this issue could have been the reason the planetary gears went out as well and we had to replace the transmission at considerable cost. Ford service indicated it would take at least a week to two weeks for repair as there were other transmission jobs in front of ours at both dealerships. We made the decision to have it towed to another transmission repair shop as we could not be without our vehicle for up to two weeks. Ford is now refusing to help pay for repairs/replacement since repairs were not done at a Ford certified repair shop. We even kept the transmission for Ford to take a look at in regard to this recall...they weren't interested. This vehicle has only 104,000 miles, this should not have happened.

Electronic power steering (epsa) is leaking water and power steering fluid. It's making noises and I am scared to drive it since this is my main transportation for work and family. I've read about this issue and people saying their wheels have locked up and just missed fatal accidents especially doing higher speeds on highway travel. Is it going to take a death before this part is recalled? truck comes to a quick stop like its jumping gears.

Transmission range sensor is malfunctioning. Truck shifts gears erratically, reverse lights will not operate creating a safety hazard. The shifting is also a safety hazard due to the inability to maintain control of my speed on the interstate. At times the reverse lights will come on while driving in traffic even if the vehicle is moving forward. Ford has issued a recall for the same problems for the same vehicle built in the same plant, however the manufacture date for the recall begins in August of 2011, my truck was built in June of 2011. Therefore my truck is not covered. I have already been placed at risk for an accident for this issue. I feel this is a defect already acknowledged by Ford, and can't understand why they wouldn't choose to fix every vehicle affected by this instead of just a few.

Steady driving down road at 40+ mph, truck automatically shifted into 1st gear. Coasted to a stop, shut truck off, started it back up, and transmission was locked into 5th gear. Vehicle would not down or up shift, or disengage into neutral. Lcd and instrument cluster lost all information including speed, mpg, miles remaining, current mileage, etc. Current model year is covered by existing Ford/NHTSA recall including my build date and build location, however Ford says that the specific part in my vehicle is not applicable, despite tsb/recall symptoms matching my issue perfectly. NHTSA recall # 16V248000, Ford recall # 16S19.
