F-150

  • 32,000 miles
Taking off from a start, vehicle acted like transmission was slipping, then slammed between 5th gear and 2nd gear repeatedly, and entered limp home mode. Separate instance: When passing another vehicle on two-lane road, full throttle, vehicle slammed into 2nd gear and entered limp home mode while I was in oncoming traffic, forcing me to abort the pass. Both times, in order to resolve the problem, I had to pull over, stop the vehicle, turn ignition off, and re-start the vehicle.

Sudden downshift at highway speed. Vehicle was in motion, 60 mph. Several occurrences until vehicle was safely removed from roadway. Speedometer showed "0 mph" when downshifts occurred. Rear wheels skidded on dry pavement creating extremely unsafe situation. It being unsafe to drive, had it towed to dealer. Stated unsafe to drive and transmission downshifts to lowest gear at highway speeds. Service writer described problem as speedometer problem and did not state a sudden downshift occurred. Service writer entered mileage as 125,002 instead of around 40,000. I gave the service writer several printed instances of downshift occurrences I obtained from various websites. Did not seem interested. If anyone searches databases, the problem would show as a high mileage vehicle with a speedometer problem, instead of a low mileage vehicle supposedly still under warranty with a severe transmission safety issue. Cost, $1049.61 and not covered under warranty (as per dealer) and simply a speed sensor issue.

My Ford F150 with 6R80 automatic transmission vehicle frequently loses vehicle speedometer reading - the display drops outs to zero mph and rough & dangerous downshifts often results even at freeway speeds @ 75 mph. It has happened many times beginning summer of 2017 with stored PCM fault codes still present.

I know that the us govt is looking into Ford that downshift randomly into first gear, and I wanted to report that my F150 has done this twice, I don't remember where the second one occurred but the first one was on the highway going about 65. Sudden unexpected downshift to a low gear and engine rpms redline and truck slows down considerably. My truck was built 1/13.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 70 mph, the gear shifter independently shifted from sixth to first gear without warning. The vehicle spun around in a circle more than twice in another direction. The contact had to maneuver the vehicle back around in the correct direction. Stowe Ford (104 E crockett St, gordon, tx 76453, (254) 693-5323) was notified. The manufacturer was notified and indicated that this was a known issue, but a recall had not been issued. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

When attempting to pull into traffic from stopped position, automatic transmission begins forward motion in 5th gear and will not change from 5th gear. As accelerator is pressed rpms go up but car barely moves. Once truck is turned off and back on transmission is back in 1st gear, but this isn't always an option when cars are approaching rapidly from behind.

Truck will sometimes downshift unexpectedly from cruising speeds or when taking slow corners. This will cause lurches that are unexpected and scary. Took the truck in to Ford dealership and they told us the oss and vss sensors were not communicating and the molded leadnframe had to be replaced.

I experienced this several time but to a lesser degree and at slower speeds than this instance. I was driving on the highway at normal highway speed when suddenly my F-150 shifted from 6th gear into 2nd. It felt as if someone had slammed on the breaks. I was jolted forward and the vehicle behind me had to slam on its breaks and swerve to avoid me. I pulled over to the side of the road and could not get my truck to change out of 2nd gear. I turned the truck off then back on and it seemed normal for a second then went into "limp home mode." I then drove in "limp home mode" from where I was to the closest transmission shop because my truck was 4,000 miles over the powertrain warranty. The shop told me that I had to replace several gears within my transmission and it was cause by a faulty lead frame. This happens to be the same part that was recalled on the 2011 and 2012 models. This seems extremely careless and dangerous of Ford to knowingly not recall a part despite the fact that it can lead to serious accidents.

  • 125,000 miles
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly downshifted from sixth to first gear and the wheels locked up. The failures caused the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic. The contact shifted into neutral and coasted the vehicle to the side of the road, where it was turned off and restarted. The failure occurred more than once since the contact owned the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer (lance cunningham Ford, 4101 clinton hwy, knoxville, tn 37912, (866) 591-3943) for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer issued a recall for the 2010-2012 models, but not for the 2013. The VIN was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

  • 86,000 miles
My vehicle has approximately 86,000 miles. While accelerating truck shifts from 1st to 5th gear. I stopped the truck and turned the key off and back on, the truck ran fine after that. Problem accelerated to the point of the last incident, when while traveling at 65 mph the truck downshifted into a much lower gear nearly causing a major accident as I was in the far left lane of a very busy freeway. At this point we took the truck into port lavaca Ford. They have had the necessary part on order for 3 weeks. We are told the part is on back order and some dealers in our area have been waiting for over a month for the part and it is still not available. I feel Ford needs to address this issue and provide the necessary parts to customers in a timely manner.

F-150

  • 64,000 miles
While driving at constant speed on the highway at approximately 70mph, truck spontaneously downshifted into a drastically lower gear (from 6th gear to 1 or 2). Vehicle rear tires chirped/squealed and vehicle lurched due to engine braking effect vs. Current speed. Speedometer needle waved wildly during this event (+/- 30mph back and forth). Condition appears identical to recall symptoms on 2011-2012 truck of same make/model/build location. No accident occurred as a result of this malfunction, but would have had another vehicle been nearby (temporary loss of control and rapid loss of speed). A case was opened with Ford corporate on 10/30/17. Both Ford corporate and dealer service refuse to acknowledge that any issue is present since the technician was unable to duplicate malfunction. When informed that further use of the vehicle without resolution would unnecessarily endanger myself and my family, neither representative offered any further steps toward resolution. Several similar issues appear to exist with identical vehicles base upon simple internet searches.

  • 114,000 miles
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving various speeds, the vehicle downshifted and the check engine and power train (wrench) warning indicators illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over, shut off, and restarted the vehicle on the first attempt. The contact noticed the failure more when he first started the vehicle and drove the first few miles. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (Ford of escondido, 1717 auto park way, escondido, ca, 92029) where it was diagnosed that the lead frame failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired at the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: Cas13257072. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 16V248000 (power train) and referred the contact to the dealer. The dealer referred the contact back to the manufacturer. The contact was not offered any additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000. Updated 8/1/18
