ABS hydraulic control unit, I had gotten rear ended in October 2016 as I was turning into my housing complex and I hit the brakes after I was hit and the pedal had gone completely to the floor and I had lost brake pressure and it was difficult to stop. I took it into a reputable repair shop and they said there was no issue with my brakes and now they are only getting worse and with the research that I have been doing it seems that this is a pretty common issue with Ford Fusion and Ford is not doing a recall for this $600 part. This is an extremely important part of a vehicle and I hope that this will be considered and Ford will issue a recall so customers aren't paying thousands of dollars due to a problem with their engineering on this part.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Fusion. While driving 40 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle was able to stop after pumping the brake pedal multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rear brakes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred five months later. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000. Updated 06/23/17

When hitting brakes while going over rough or bumpy roads at 25 miles per hour or higher brakes engage anti-lock braking and brake pedal stops working with now power and no resistance. Brakes stop working and must be pumped several times to get a response. Slowly at times it may take days to get back to working a full pressure unless issue arises with rough road.

ABS braking system issue on Ford Fusion. After engaging ABS, the brakes are loose and soft causing driver to press firmly to applied brakes and causing longer stops. Have had two brake specialist review and they are unable to resolve. Seems to be a common complaint among Ford Fusion owners. Own Ford Focus, edge, Explorer, and Mercury monterrey and Mountaineer that do not exhibit this issue.

Over the past couple years when the ABS was activated during hard braking, the pedal went very low and compromised braking power. After a few pumps the pedal regained its pressure, but whenever the ABS activated the pedal would go low again. This symptom was easily repeatable. In Oct 2016, the brake pedal remained low permanently when under normal vehicle operation, but still had braking power. I brought it into a brake shop in Nov 2016 to see what the problem was and after they replaced the brake master cylinder the car still had the same symptoms. The narrowed it down to the ABS pump and after bench-testing it they determined it had stuck valves which was allowing air into the brake system. This appears to be a common and potentially very dangerous problem with 06-08 Ford Fusion.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Fusion. While driving 45 mph, the master cylinder and brake booster malfunctioned. The contact loss complete control of the brake functionality and had to engage the emergency brake to come to a complete stop. It was diagnosed that the failure was due to the master cylinder or brake booster control. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 79,597.

After applying the brakes in the rain and the ABS activating my brake pedal has been soft since then. I have had the brake system power bled at Ford and serviced with new brake fluid, that didn't solve the problem. I replaced the master cyclinder and that didn't help. I've inspected all the calipers and everything seems to be working fine. After doing research I've seen numerous others have had the same problem. I also seen that you all have a current investigation against this condition. PE 16-017. I would like to see I can get added to this complaint as I believe that Ford has an issue with its hcu and this is an unsafe driving condition.

When braking, particularly on uneven surfaces and/or when cornering, the ABS system, or some component causes the car to vibrate or pull the vehicle left, and it makes noise. Sometimes it is reluctant to brake at all. On one occasion while approaching a red light at an intersection where the speed limit is 35 M.P.H., I crossed uneven pavement. I applied the brakes but nothing happened. I quickly pumped the brakes and they responded just in time. On another occasion traffic slowed unexpectedly due to construction at a city street intersection, again 35 M.P.H. zone. I pressed the brakes but nothing happened until the brake pedal hit the floor. I stopped just before striking the car in front of me. I was not speeding at the time of either incident. At a service on 9/28/16, at rusty eck Ford in wichita, ks, my service advisor gave me the standard information about the service, and included the fact that my brake pads were nearing replacement. This was not surprising. I believe I mentioned one incident with brake shuddering while braking on an uneven road at that point. What he told me next though shocked me. He explained that, based on his conversation with the service technician who had driven my car approximately 100 yds., that I would probably need to have my brake master cylinder replaced in the near future. This made no sense because the car is in excellent condition, is garage kept, dealer serviced, and has less than 100,000 miles on it. His comments started to make sense when I learned that my make, model, and year of vehicle was under investigation by your Agency for this brake problem. I am willing to aid your investigation as best I can, because it seems that this is a very real and dangerous problem, and that Ford has been aware of it for at least some time.

Driving and lost all brakes. Went to the floor as I was driving in normal weather in Iowa. This was my daughter's car, I am thankful it happened to me and not my 17 year old. As a single mom with no income at this time, the car now has been parked for 3 months. So I have had time to do some research: The brake fluid was completely empty. There were no signs of brake fluid leak. I did find it is possible that the plastic on the brake booster if corroded, that the brake fluid was being sucked into the intake manifold, leaving no signs of it leaking. I also found by doing a simple search on the web forums: The same issue has been reported by other 2008 form Fusion owners. And if you paid attention by simply looking at VIN number, all of the cars were produced on the same line, in the same plant, at the same time frame. And were about 100 cars apart consecutively down the line. I have had a master mechanic do a diagnostics: The brake booster and the master brake cylinder both need replaced. Also a misfire was happening. Have yet to be determined if this causes that. We won't know until I get the brakes fixed. I don't know how I, a 38 year old single mom from Iowa can see that there needs to be an obvious recall from you and Ford. But we shouldn't have to put my child's nor my lives on the line for you to pull your head out of your hind ends to see the obvious.

When braking, the pedal may initially require little movement to slow down but may suddenly stop braking and the pedal will drop to nearly full travel before brakes start working again, and then sometimes at that point brake hard. Other times, if braking hard enough on the slippery surface, the ABS will kick in, but afterwards the pedal will become very soft and ineffective. Sometimes, turning off the car and restarting will "reset" the brakes, but not always. Also, some days without explanations the pedal is softer than other times. There is not a consistent amount of travel required for the same braking. The vehicle shows no error codes at any of these times. The pedal going soft for no reason without an ABS event happened today so I will enter today as the day this happened, but these issues have been happening often for the last few years.

On multiple occasions after going over an uneven surface the vehicle has developed a soft brake pedal after ABS activation. This of course significantly increases the stopping distance of the vehicle. The condition will persist but can typically be temporarily corrected by performing a panic stop that causes the ABS to activate. I am a former ase certified master technician, service advisor and current assistance service manager for various manufacturer at a dealer level. This issue obviously originates from one or more valves inside the ABS hydraulic control unit sticking. Your average customer/consumer would not know what to do in the event this condition occurs and accidents have obviously already happened and will continue to happen. You're average independent repair shops would not know how to diagnose this condition and likely not be able to repair it. My mother drives this car which I gave to her and thankfully hardly drives. After working for General Motors during the ignition switch disaster and the dozens of recalls they released after I wouldn't be upset to never see another recall again. However this is a fault within a vehicle I firmly believe should not be the consumers responsibility to repair. This affects the safety of not just those in the car but those outside the car as well.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The contact stated the brake pedal was pumped several times in order to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that no waring lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the failure could not be duplicated but brake fluid was added. The contact mentioned that the failure still persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000. The VIN was not available.

After each time the anti-lock brakes engage the brake pedal feel becomes soft. This issue has been occurring intermittently over the past 3 years. The pedal feel stays soft for days, slowly returning to normal. The car will still stop, however, during these times, just to slow my car, the pedal must be pushed almost to the floor with substantially more force than normal.

Brakes are spongy and intermittently do work at all..have replaced calipers twice and bled the lines only to have the same problem. Air bag on passengers side is coming apart in dash. While turning into driveway where there was a manhole cover which created a minimal bump in the roadway, the brakes went to the floor. The car was barely able to stop as normal. Since then the brakes are very spongy and low to the floor. The brakes returned to normal after driving again but then the same thing happened again. Again it happened while turning and braking while going over a small pot hole entering a freeway onramp. A mechanic says it is due to the hydrolic control unit.

Once my antilock brakes kicked in this winter, my brake pedal never went back to normal. It is very mushy and sometimes when going slowly down a small incline (I.e. exiting a parking lot), or over rough roads, it is hard to brake. In 2015 the exact same thing happened - my ABS system kicked in once during winter and my brakes were mushy. Except that time, carx did a free brake examination, couldn't find the problem but when I got the car back. The brake pedal was firm again. This time, in 2017 I took to Ford dealership and so far, they have no idea what is wrong with it. Carx thinks I need a whole new hydraulic cylinder unit for ABS and/or master cylinder.
