problem #63

Dec 172016

Fusion 4-cyl

  • 78,000 miles
While recently driving on snow, the brakes seemed to almost malfunction after ABS was activated. I had to press the brakes almost to the floor to brake which delayed my ability to brake almost causing my vehicle to not stop in time. This happened while driving at any speed in slick conditions that would activate the ABS system. Pumping the brakes would help to bring the brake pressure back but would almost instantly go out again the next time I had to brake. This significantly decreases my ability to drive safely.

The contact owns a 2009 Ford Fusion. While operating the vehicle and depressing the brake pedal, the ABS sensor activated. Moments later, the brake pedal extended to the floor when it was depressed. The vehicle did not immediately stop and the stopping distance was increased. The dealer changed the rear rotors and brake pads, and brake fluid; however, the same failure recurred several months later. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the front brake pads and rotors were replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 103,914.

The contact owns a 2009 Ford Fusion. While driving various speeds, the brakes failed without warning. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the brake pads and shoes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The dealer diagnosed that the brake pads and shoes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired a second time, but the failure recurred. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 81,492.

The brake pedal went to the floor while I was applying them under normal conditions. Maybe 25 mph on a city street. After having a mechanic inspect my car, he determined the ABS hydraulic unit was bad.....$1600 later the problem was fixed. I got lucky, but that failure could've been dangerous. The brakes did engage, but when the pedal was almost to the floor.

After the antilock brakes are enabled the brake pedal goes almost all the way to the floor before the brakes are activated. This problem has caused the vehicle to go past several important stopping points including street lights.

The anti-lock brake system goes soft and the brakes go to the floor in snowy or rainy conditions. I have experienced this on two snowy days in Massachusetts on December 17th and 18th, 2016. The car would not stop when I braked in motion for a 2 way stop sign. The brakes made large noises and felt very soft and the car would not completely stop. Fortunately I was only going 15 miles ph and no other cars were approaching. However, if a car was proceeding I would have crashed into the car.I understand that the 2009 Ford Fusion is under investigation that the brakes may fail in certain weather conditions. This is true as I have experienced it. What do we do while waiting for this investigation" it is a safety problem with the car. Is Ford responsible in between this investigation to fix the problem? can I bring my car to the Ford center to have this issue fixed on their dime"

Twice this year I tried to brake while going over a rough surface coming to an intersection and the brakes went to the floor and it took more distance to stop than it should. The brake pedal stayed low for about 15 min. Until it eventually came back to regular position. Took it to dealer on Oct. 26,2016 when it happened the second time and they said they checked everything and my brakes were fine. I even suggested it seemed to be related to ABS since I didn't feel the normal 'grabbing' sensation when the ABS takes over.

After coming to a hard stop on interstate due to a crash ahead brake pedal went soft and braking was diminished. I took the vehicle to a nearby Ford dealer and they bled the brakes and engaged the anti-lock system in a gravel lot to 'reset' the system. I treated this as a on off anomaly until I saw in the news that others have also experienced this.

While driving in slush and snowy asphalt roads, I was turning the corner on city roads at a stoplight and I started to slide so I pressed my brakes and my pedal went straight to the floor. I could pump my brakes and I would slowly slow down but in order to stop I had to press the pedal to the floor hard. I did take my vehicle in for service on 12/20/16 at a Ford dealership and they replaced the ABS hydraulic control unit for $1274.

After anti-lock brakes engaged while driving, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and lost most of the braking ability. This happened 3 times. The first 2 times it happened, the braking pressure recovered within a day and brakes went back to normal. The 3rd time it happened the brake pressure never recovered completely. I still have braking ability, but requires a long brake pedal travel to engage brakes fully. If I pump brakes, pedal pressure seems to build to a normal level, but will go back to a soft feel immediately after I stop pumping (as if the brake fluid is leaking past something internally). Had dealer look at it after 1st incident, but couldn't diagnose any problems with system (brakes had gone back to normal by then). I am currently driving with the long pedal travel and soft feel of the brakes, but have learned to compensate for it.

While traveling on the expressway at speed, on two different occasions, the brake pedal on my '09 Ford Fusion first began to grab then traveled all the way to the floor resulting in no brakes. The first time was just after hitting a pot hole and the second was on wet payment. The first resulted in sliding into an intersection after exiting the freeway and being able to stop. The second required me to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid rear-ending the car in front of me. The car was then inspected at a Ford dealership which said the brake fluid was a bit low but no other problems were found. The pads are good, no leaks have been detected and yet the low fluid can't be explained, even though it was inspected two months earlier. Both failures occurred during hard braking and one other issue such as a pot hole or wet pavement. No alert indicators lights on the dash have ever come on. The dealer reported no error codes being available from the computer. The issue has not occurred in the last 3 weeks since the last dealer "repair".

2 times in past two months, while driving in rain my car lost brake pressure. Once on a local street and once on a highway exit ramp. Both times driving straight but trying to make a quick stop. In both times this happened while braking on a metal surface (manhole cover). I had to press the brake all the way to the floor in order for the car to stop. This loss of pressure lasted for hours/overnight. I was able to stop but the stopping process took a lot longer. I brought my car into the shop today 12/27/16 and the shop found nothing wrong. I then saw an article, today, regarding the NHTSA investigation into the loss of brake pressure in Ford Fusion. I am reporting this so that it is known my Ford Fusion has had the same issue.

Hit the brakes coming down a hill on wet surface, had a ABS event and the brake pedal went to floor. Had to pump brakes to stop. Now constant soft pedal. No brake light or ABS light came on or have since come on. Had master brake cylinder replaced was not the problem. Researched online and found information saying the ABS system was malfunctioning and many other people have the same problem.
