Fusion

  • 102,000 miles
Both my wife and I experienced the brake pedal going soft so that we had to press down further and the brake pedal traveled down further to get to firm resistance. The car would not brake normally but required more pressure to brake the car and took longer to stop. We felt unsafe. It occurred at various speeds, when trying to stop. The problem is intermittent and we do not know when it will occur or why it is happening. This happened when trying to stop for street lights or stop signs and occurred this past month, the beginning of December 2016. It happened when we were traveling straight or on a curve coming to a full stop. It happened on more than one date, several times towards the beginning of December 2016

My brake pedal has gone soft and operates now much closer to the floor of the vehicle following a rather severe application of braking to avoid a collision. (I was traveling through an intersection on a major roadway at 40-45 mph when a vehicle made a left turn in front of me) immediately following the incident, I feared that the vehicle was not going to stop at the next traffic light and so it went for the remainder of the day in October, 2016. The brakes were not right. After several days I noticed that the brakes did feel a little better, however, I am sure having driven this vehicle since purchased new, they are not what they were prior to the hard stop.

When anti-lock braking system is needed, such as on a slippery road, the brake pedal goes to the floor, resulting in a lack of stopping power, resulting in a hazardous situation. When roads are not slippery, brakes work normally.

2009 Ford Fusion brake problems. The brake pedal intermittenly goes down the floor unexepectly. I had to stand on the brake pedal to stop the car. This issue has been reported to murphy Ford, chester pa on 4 occasions. This car has been towed twice to murphy Ford, concerning this issue. Murphy Ford could not duplicate this problem. After the 4th visit, and murphy Ford could not duplicate the problem, I requested that the master cylinder be replace. This car is unsafe and Ford should correct this problem. I am authorizing the nhtsb to review my vehicle service record from murphy Ford concerning this issue.

  • 78,000 miles
While recently driving on snow, the brakes seemed to almost malfunction after ABS was activated. I had to press the brakes almost to the floor to brake which delayed my ability to brake almost causing my vehicle to not stop in time. This happened while driving at any speed in slick conditions that would activate the ABS system. Pumping the brakes would help to bring the brake pressure back but would almost instantly go out again the next time I had to brake. This significantly decreases my ability to drive safely.

The contact owns a 2009 Ford Fusion. While operating the vehicle and depressing the brake pedal, the ABS sensor activated. Moments later, the brake pedal extended to the floor when it was depressed. The vehicle did not immediately stop and the stopping distance was increased. The dealer changed the rear rotors and brake pads, and brake fluid; however, the same failure recurred several months later. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the front brake pads and rotors were replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 103,914.

The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the brake pads and shoes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The dealer diagnosed that the brake pads and shoes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired a second time, but the failure recurred. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 81,492.

The brake pedal went to the floor while I was applying them under normal conditions. Maybe 25 mph on a city street. After having a mechanic inspect my car, he determined the ABS hydraulic unit was bad.....$1600 later the problem was fixed. I got lucky, but that failure could've been dangerous. The brakes did engage, but when the pedal was almost to the floor.

The anti-lock brake system goes soft and the brakes go to the floor in snowy or rainy conditions. I have experienced this on two snowy days in Massachusetts on December 17th and 18th, 2016. The car would not stop when I braked in motion for a 2 way stop sign. The brakes made large noises and felt very soft and the car would not completely stop. Fortunately I was only going 15 miles ph and no other cars were approaching. However, if a car was proceeding I would have crashed into the car.I understand that the 2009 Ford Fusion is under investigation that the brakes may fail in certain weather conditions. This is true as I have experienced it. What do we do while waiting for this investigation" it is a safety problem with the car. Is Ford responsible in between this investigation to fix the problem? can I bring my car to the Ford center to have this issue fixed on their dime"

Twice this year I tried to brake while going over a rough surface coming to an intersection and the brakes went to the floor and it took more distance to stop than it should. The brake pedal stayed low for about 15 min. Until it eventually came back to regular position. Took it to dealer on Oct. 26,2016 when it happened the second time and they said they checked everything and my brakes were fine. I even suggested it seemed to be related to ABS since I didn't feel the normal 'grabbing' sensation when the ABS takes over.

After coming to a hard stop on interstate due to a crash ahead brake pedal went soft and braking was diminished. I took the vehicle to a nearby Ford dealer and they bled the brakes and engaged the anti-lock system in a gravel lot to 'reset' the system. I treated this as a on off anomaly until I saw in the news that others have also experienced this.

While driving in slush and snowy asphalt roads, I was turning the corner on city roads at a stoplight and I started to slide so I pressed my brakes and my pedal went straight to the floor. I could pump my brakes and I would slowly slow down but in order to stop I had to press the pedal to the floor hard. I did take my vehicle in for service on 12/20/16 at a Ford dealership and they replaced the ABS hydraulic control unit for $1274.

After anti-lock brakes engaged while driving, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and lost most of the braking ability. This happened 3 times. The first 2 times it happened, the braking pressure recovered within a day and brakes went back to normal. The 3rd time it happened the brake pressure never recovered completely. I still have braking ability, but requires a long brake pedal travel to engage brakes fully. If I pump brakes, pedal pressure seems to build to a normal level, but will go back to a soft feel immediately after I stop pumping (as if the brake fluid is leaking past something internally). Had dealer look at it after 1st incident, but couldn't diagnose any problems with system (brakes had gone back to normal by then). I am currently driving with the long pedal travel and soft feel of the brakes, but have learned to compensate for it.
