Defective gas gauge in 2005 Envoy, only has 56,000 miles on it. Gauge bounces erratically, and even after filling up the tank the gauge shows empty. Problem just started last week and now happens daily - there is no reliable way to tell how much gas I actually have. Nothing has been done to correct the problem, but I noticed on the internet that this is a wide-spread problem for this vehicle.

My 2005 GMC Envoy is doing the same thing with the fuel system. I will fill up & the gas gauge will tell me there is no gas in it until so many miles and it still wont tell me there is a full tank, it will just creep up a little. Just from reading all the other complaints about the fuel system from 05 & 06 models there should be a recall before someone really gets hurt.

Gas gauge stopped working. This has also happened on three other GM SUV's (1999-2005 model years) in my family. Coincidence? no way. There should be a recall. This is a very expensive repair and one consumers should not have to pay for. I have not seen this happen on any other vehicle that I or any member of my family has driven (VW, Chrysler, Honda, Subaru, Jeep) but that the same part has failed on four GM SUV's in the same family tells me that this is a wide-spread problem and there is a defect in this part.

For the last few months my 2005 GMC Envoy denali has had repeated problems with the fuel gauge. After re-fueling the vehicle, the gauge will go to empty and illuminate the empty tank warning light. The check engine light also comes on. Within a few miles the fuel gauge will begin to fluctuate wildly for a period of time, making it impossible to know how much gas is in it. The fuel gauge sometimes begins to operate again after the car has been driven for a few days. Car has become unsafe because it is difficult to determine how much fuel is in it and empty tank sensor "cries wolf." Also, the fuel gauge has begun to register a full tank when really the gas tank is near empty. Once you start driving the fuel gauge begins to fall slowly until about 10 minutes later it finally registers the proper gas level... I've thought my husband filled up the tank and almost run out of gas because the fuel gauge didn't tell me I was out of gas until I was on the highway stuck in traffic - away from a nearby gas station. The trip odometer is not an exact science so it cannot be relied upon. (mpg vary depending out temperature, city vs. Highway miles, mph, etc). Sporadic failure of speedometer - registers correctly one moment, or may read 30 mph or 0 mpg when keeping with the flow of traffic on the interstate. While this does not occur each trip, it does occur several times each week. Fuel gauge malfunction - reads one-half tank at 179 miles; 20 miles later reads one-quarter tank. Issues "fuel level low" warning after refueling and for next 3 to 4 times vehicle is started headlights dim briefly when accelerator is released. Frequent need to replace exterior lamps the problems first manifest in the need to repeatedly change brake and taillight bulbs, and the dimming of the headlights, which continues. Then, sporadically, the speedometer stopped functioning, or only registered a fraction of the speed the vehicle was traveling. After that, at start up, the "fuel level low" warning, which activates when the vehicle determines it has fuel to travel 40 additional miles, started to chime when there was more than one-half tank of fuel. The warning also now issues whenever the vehicle is refueled. The potential failure of the exterior lighting system presents a clear hazard to the occupants of the vehicle and others - the driver wouldn't be able to see where he is going, and other drivers wouldn't be able to see the vehicle heading toward them. The fuel system issues could lead to unexpectedly running out of fuel, creating the potential for a disabled vehicle or its driver being hit by another. In addition, depending on the cause of the malfunction, the vehicle could be susceptible to fire. Without a functioning speedometer, the driver can easily travel too fast for conditions, or endanger himself and others in a construction zone. Currently, until the sporadic problems become regular, the garage will not fix the vehicle.

Out of nowhere my front head lights went out. Its not the fuse or the bulbs, both front low lights went out. The high beams work. There is no power going to the lights and I have to buy a new switch. I also had to replace the engine almost a year ago because the O rings went up. The gas gauge is broken and my passenger window will not go down. I feel so stuck with this car!

The fuel level reads empty when I have just filled the tank. Then when I drive for little while the level reads half full then goes back to empty. There is no way to tell how much gas is in the tank. The fuel level gauge is sometimes moving back fast to empty while driving.

2005 Envoy, fuel gauge suddenly became erratic, reading empty when tank was full. Initially, after filling tank, fuel gauge would continue to read empty until driven approximately 20-25 miles. Now rarely reads above empty. Gas gauge is now completely ineffective, high likelihood of running the car out of gas in a dangerous situation.

Defective fuel gauge that swings between full and empty - this is the second time this occurred with this vehicle. The first required a replacement of the in tank sending unit.

When I fill it completely full with gas on my 2005 Envoy it says that its empty. I have to drive almost 50 miles or more for it to register right. Also one time when I was backing out of a parking stall it just quit not very safe I could have been hit by another car.

In reference to DP10-001. I have a 2005 GMC Envoy that has an erratic gas gauge as well. After re-fueling the vehicle, the gauge will go to empty and illuminate the empty tank warning light. After driving about 20 miles, the gauge will return to the full position, but will fluctuate occasionally. I have had the problem diagnosed as possible faulty sending unit, faulty gauge and faulty sensors on the fuel pump assembly.

The gas gauge stopped working and shows that the vehicle is on empty. The "low fuel' indicator on the dash will blink randomly and "ding" to draw my attention to it. The gas cap was replaced a week later but the problem has not been resolved. It continues to read "empty." Since then the speedometer has also stopped working. The speedometer hand has completely dropped below the 120 mph mark, although for a few weeks it would register that I was driving much faster than the speed of traffic around me. Moreover, it would register 30 mph when the vehicle was completely stopped. Yet, it has since stopped working altogether. The vehicle has also recently stalled in reverse and several times has surged/accelerated quickly when I am driving slowly and push the gas pedal to accelerate. I have an appointment with the local GMC dealership and have called the national GMC dealer to document my complaint(s).

My 2005 GMC Envoy gas gauge began to become erratic in November of 09. At that time it would work some times and not others. After a few weeks it stopped working in any manner and constantly fluctuates up and down, causing the low fuel indicator to go on and off. This occurs even when the vehicle has just been filled with gas and the gas cap tightened. The only way to monitor gas at this time is through tracking mileage. Vehicle will randomly stall when idle. The stalling is noted to be occurring more frequently the longer this goes unrepaired. Stalling at lights, in parking lots and while backing up puts us at risk of being hit by another vehicle. Also the inability to accurately monitor the amount of gas in the vehicle puts myself and my family at risk of being stranded while traveling. The only other person I know with this same make and model has the same problem. Correction is replacement of the part which is between $600 and $800.

Never had fuel gauge problems before, filled my tank, drove away from gas station and within one mile, the fuel bell went off and the warning light turned on. Went back to gas station thinking I had been ripped off, but owner showed me on gas pump that it had pumped $60 worth of gas. Now the fuel gauge doesn't work at all, the warning light is always on. I've been given quotes to fix it ranging from $400 to $600. With all these problems, GM should issue a recall and fix for everyone free.

2005 GMC Envoy gas gauge does not work. Car had 42000 miles when it quit. Car now has 50200 miles on it. Gas gauge reads empty and sometimes will float just above empty even with a full tank of gas. Car has left family along side road while waiting for help. Should be a recall as there is thousands of complaints on this issue. Updated 02/01/10 updated 02/02/10.
