I had read about this problem and i did have squeaky brakes, but was waiting till the next oil change to see what they would say. Then the other day it started to sound like I was dragging metal on metal under my car, regardless of whether or not I was braking. Seemed worse around 30-40mph, but I wasn't on a highway with it that day so I don't know about faster speeds.

Took it in last night, of course not squeaking or grinding at all, but they tell me rear brake pads are worn and will need to be replaced. The cost is nearly $300, seems my dealer is more expensive than everyone else's. The girl was very nice and is discounting us a bit on the labor. So I think she is saving us $15 or so. Wow, thanks.

Anyway, so annoying. I've had so many makes of car and this is my first and will be my last Honda. If a car has the #1 volume in complaints and Honda can't step up and pacify its customers, then I don't think they deserve those customers! Mine is leased - so this hassle may not be mine for long. Thankfully.

Update from Jan 28, 2010: Update a few weeks later: after a telephone survey, I received a call from the dealer. After reviewing the issue again, they are going to refund me 1/2 the cost. This brings the cost of my repair from close to $300 to just around $150. I'm not crazy about having to spend anything on a two year old car but since I have not put anything into it other than lease payments, I am fairly satisfied with the solution. Let's see how long the pads last this time!

Recently, I presented my 2008 Accord for tire rotation and I was told that at my next oil change, I would need new rear brakes! I called Honda Corporate and was told that they would assume half the cost of the repair. I stated that replacing brakes on a car with such low mileage was ludicrous! Barry at corporate refused to budge even after I stated that Honda's parts were inferior. He asked if I would accept having to pay for new brakes at 30,000 miles and I said I would if I was the type of driver who rode the brakes constantly. His logic was obviously, "half the brake life; half the cost!"

I told him that I had leased GM cars every 3-years over the past 30-years and never once replaced brakes even after reaching 36,000 miles. I further stated that I loved my Honda and the dealership, but if Honda doesn't stand behind it's components, I will go elsewhere!

2008 Accord. The rear brakes are worn out. The dealer "Kunie Honda" in Centennial wanted $225 to replace the rear only. I took it to Just Brakes and they did front and rear for $209. I have done some investigating about this problem and found cases even worse than mine. Some Hondas are worn out at 12,000 miles. I'm waiting to hear from Mr. Herm Brocksmith "General Manager" about compensation. I understand there is a class action suit about this situation. The fronts were fine. For $14 I had them do the the other set as well. I kept the parts just in case. I needed the proof.

Brakes started lightly squealing about 6 months after purchase and got progressively worse. I took it for brake service 8 months after first signs and the dealer, after prodding, changed out the brake pads. Not even four months later, same problem!!

I had a Civic and a Pilot before this and both NEVER had brake problems. Unfortunately, I'm not alone, I see!!

Accord EXL 2.2L 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 25,837 miles

Brought in my vehicle to have the tires rotated and was informed that my front brakes were fine or about 9 out of 10 as far as wear was considered. My rear brakes needed replacement at $281.00. They were at 1 of 10 in wear. I asked if something was wrond with the car mechanically to make the rear brakes wear unbelievably fast. I drive about 90 percent highway miles. I declined the repair until I could get more information on them.

Went home and did a quick Google search and found this forum as well as many others all pointing to the very same complaint on all versions of the 2008 and 2009 Accords. This has been a great car otherwise but this was clearly a design flaw and a potential safety hazard. I contacted American Honda customer service after searching their site to complain at 800 999 1009 and spoke with Chris who asked what I was experiencing. I told him that literally every owner of this car is replacing rear brakes on an average of every 15,000 miles. Some were getting the repair for free, some at half and some were getting nothing. I asked how I was going to be treated. He carefully would not admit that there was an issue but the service manager at my dealership would contact me.

The service manager called the next day and told me that he would have to talk with the District parts manager and that there was a service bulletin on this subject due on January 10, 2010 that would indicate what they would do for me.

Chris called back the next day to affirm that I was contacted which I confirmed. I asked about the service bulletin and he confirmed that January 10 was the due date. I asked him what the bulletin was going to say given that there was a due date, surely they had some indication on what it contained. He told me that they were not informed on the details and I would have to wait about two weeks for the bulletin.

On January 11, I called the dealer and asked for the service manager who was not available but in the building and left a message. No response. Went to the dealership in person and waited a half hour to find that he was not available and was talking with the district manager. Left a message with the shop tech who told me that the service manager would be contacting me. I expressed extreme displeasure with Honda not stepping up. I can accept a problem with the car if they stand behind it but it appears that it is a wear item in their view and that is only covered for a year or 12,000 miles. He said that there is wide variation on what has been covered and this is common. I told him that I would contact the Attorney General soon if this was not handled soon.

Two days pass and a message is on my machine from the service manager telling me to call back but there is no decision made nor did the service bulletin get released on the 10th as promised. I should not wait to get it repaired if it needs it but he couldn't tell me if I would get recovery. I've held off because $281 every other oil change is completely insane.

Called Chris back who had nothing to say except that the bulletin had not been released. I should go to the dealer and have the service manager contact him when I am there.

Honda is known for building reliable cars but the customer experience has been more than dreadful. The dealer appears to be doing his best and they have provided a good experience up to this point. American Honda customer service has failed completely. Compare this to other places like the Apple Store who bend over backwards to make their customers happy even when the warranty has expired in some cases. Their stores are always full when the others around them are empty even in this economy.

Honda take note. Forums like this fill your silence on this matter. This is an opportunity to step up and make customers satisfied. They can act as your evangelists or the voice of dissatisfaction. Google assures that it is easy to find and forever. Your choice.

After taking my car in to the local Honda dealer for routine maintenance, I was told that my rear brakes were worn out. Asked about the fronts, they were fine. When I questioned why rear would wear out first and after only 24K miles, the service manager gave me no explanation. Called the dealer the next day, and they were very careful in their answers, but finally admitted there was a problem. With a little Internet research, I realize that thousands of owners are having the same problem. I called national honda customer service, and they agree to "offset" my repair cost, but how much they couldn't, or wouldn't tell me. Said they (Honda) were investigating the problem, and admtted that they had many complaints. I am angry with Honda for not being forthright with me about the problem from the beginning. Not impressed!!

Just like all the others. Heard a squealing noise coming from the back left tire. Took it into the Honda Dealership to have it looked at and was surprised to find out my rear brakes needed to be replaced. I bought this car new a year and a half ago so I was shocked to hear that my rear brakes needed to be replaced so soon (especially since it's front wheel drive!). Had to have them fixed and the dealer honored a 10% coupon I had gotten from another Honda Dealer. Paid $204 including tax for the job.

Also my right front passenger carpet kept coming out. They properly re-installed this under warranty.

Does anyone else have cold-start issues? Sometimes the car makes a crazy noise in the morning when I start the engine. It's in the garage too!

Accord EX-L 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,000 miles

I am the very proud owner of a top of the line 2008 Honda Accord EX-L V6 3.5L with Navigation, automatic transmission. I have owned Hondas in the past and I have never had any problems with them so I thought what the I'll spend TONS of money on this car because I bet it will last forever.

BOY WAS I WRONG!!Don't get me wrong I mean I love everything about the car EXCEPT ONE THING!

The brakes have been squeaking since I purchased the car two years ago with only 72 miles on it. Whatever I can live with that even though a brand new car should never making that noise. Then at about 12,000 miles the whole front of the car began to vibrate when applying the brakes, the last straw was when at 22,000 miles the squealing became so loud and embarrassing I took it into the dealership to have it looked at.

The verdict: I need to have my rear brake pads replaced at a whopping $200.00.

Here's my argument: rear brake pads should NEVER go before front brakes, at only 22K, NO BRAKE PADS SHOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED!!, and for $200.00???!!? I mean come on I may be a female and young but if I put my mind to it I'm sure I can figure out how to change brake pads on my own. The ONLY reason I'm paying them to do this service is in hopes that eventually the people at Honda finally fix this problem before someone dies and I can get my money back.

I am very shocked and surprised at Honda for this, I had maximum amount of respect for them until now .

So now what? in 20K more miles I'm going to have to drop another $200 to get this same problem fixed and for every 20K after that??? And it's not covered under warranty might I add.

Shocked and appalled at Honda for doing this to such a loyal customer, hopefully they fix this problem and recall soon or this will be my LAST Honda.

I was aware of premature rear brake wear from this forum, so when I took my car in to have the tires rotated, I had the dealer check the brakes. Both front brakes were at 9mm and the rear were both at 4mm. They told me I'd probably make it to 30K before needing them replaced, which was supposed to make me feel better, I guess. They also made me aware of an engine oil leak at the chain case cover. That will be covered under warranty, and there was an article they'd printed out to show me that many of the 08'-09' Accords as well as as a few other Hondas required this repair-which was a factory problem. Having mentioned these things, I still love my Accord. It is a joy to drive, and hopefully will be a reliable vehicle and live up to the reputation of past Hondas, except of course for the rear brakes...which I guess will have to be replaced every 25-30,000 miles. Sigh.

I purchased a Honda based on their record for reliability. Immediately I mentioned to the dealer that the brakes were making a squealing noise. I was told that the mechanics could not reproduce the noise. After bringing the car in a again for routine oil changes I continued to mention the issue with the brake noise. After approx 25 - 26,000 miles the brakes starting making a much louder squealing noise. Again brought it into the dealer to find out that my rear brakes needed to be replaced. I mentioned to the dealer and said I don't understand why my rear brakes needed replacement before my front brakes did and also why they needed replacement after only 28000 highway miles. I mentioned that the rear brakes on my 1999 Pontiac lasted almost 100,000 miles before they had to be replaced. I am totally unhappy with the dealer response and am going to write to Honda directly.

We have owned Honda cars for twenty years. Never had a problem this expensive crop up so soon and it looks like the problem will continue through the life of the vehicle. I brake lightly and usually get three times more distance on my brake pads. What a surprise to find that the brake pads were gone under 25,000 miiles. Car has worn rear brakes at 40K miles. Typically I get 150K out of a set of rear brakes. I'll change them myself. What a pain. Car also developed a high speed shimmy under braking at 26K.

Looks like the brake system has a little to much residual brake pressure for the rear brakes. Probably a miscalculation in the ratio between brake system pressure and surface area of the brake puck. The inner pad takes the least amount of force to move, that is why it would wear faster than the outer pad

At 20,000 miles my 2008 Honda Accord ExL needed new rear brakes, they were squealing like crazy. I called honda and they said bring it right in to the tune of $300.00, I said what the f*ck, are you smoking crack? this is a brand new car, the dealer says, yes thats normal for a 2008-2009 accord. I had another shop replace the brakes for $140.00, but the rotors are warped and it vibrates like hell when the brakes are applied and I almost cannot stop at stop signs, its scary! I think Honda should buy back all of these death trap accords before some gets seriously injured in an accident or worse. I would also like to add that the paint is really sh*tty too, it will chip right off in your hand if you wash it to much... Sad, Honda you should be ashamed of yourselves.

I think that having to pay over $200 to repair something that is so obviously a widespread Honda problem is a real pain in the butt and so not fair. I warned the Honda service department that I would go way out of my way to ensure that I spread the word out. Hopefully, Honda will be inundated with complaints that they will need to do the recall. I needed rear breaks and rotors after 38,000 miles. My non-Honda auto mechanic indicated that the old break pad design resulted in the pads continually dragging on the rotors. I was not the owner of this car but rather the technician working on it. My customer had his brakes diagnosed at Honda and came to me for a second opinion; I confirmed what Honda had concluded-the rear brakes were worn down. The customer thought this was unusual and I told him it was, however I've seen this a couple times before on other makes/ models and didn't think anything of it until I looked at this site. I am shocked at the number of complaints and had I known it was a chronic problem, I would have sent him back to Honda to complain. Hondas are exceptionally well engineered cars and this problem should not reflect the overall reputation of the company, however Honda should at least look into the problem and come to a common ground with its customers. If it doesn't, its stooping down to the same level as Ford or Chrysler.
