Sounds like the wear indicators are telling me its time for new rear brake pads - but under 15k miles?! Of course I am not going to pay $20 to have the issue looked at - just fix it!

We will see how Honda decides to handle this - considering that I brought the car in 4 times already for an uneven brake application issue.

Update from Jan 20, 2010: The dealer replaced the rear pads under warranty without any hastle. Was still experiencing the uneven brake application that would cause it to pull right when driving straight ahead. Brought it to another dealer for their opinion. After test driving it with the top two service managers and having it hooked up to their computers they say that it was operating as designed. I called Honda customer service and they said the same thing after discussing with service manager... "By Design"

After almost spinning out in the rain when applying brakes in straight line I decided my 10month old daughter and wife should never ride in the car again, so I traded it in for a Volvo V70R wagon (300HP)

Feeling much better now. So glad I was able to resolve Honda's "by design" brake issue. Figured it was easier than making them buy it back from me through the state lemon law. Paid $27k new sold for $17k with only 15k miles on it - oh well.

Too bad that Honda has lost another customer going forward... after having owned 7 hondas in the past.

Beware of the new Accords!

just like everyone else on this site.... brakes started making noise around 20K and then at 25K this LOUD annoying noise started in the rear tire. it was very embarrassing. took it to the dealer - $170 out of pocket - no warranty. I'm contacting Honda, but I'm sure they won't do anything. Maybe if enough of us do it will prompt a recall of some sort. I also signed up for information on the class action lawsuit:

I purchased a brand new 2008 Honda Accord EXL in March 2009. I noticed some brake noise from the very beginning, but just attributed it to new brakes. I didn't hear the noise all the time, so I didn't worry too much about it. A couple times I smelled a burning rubber smell, but thought for sure this is not coming from "my" new car! I brought my car in for the 5,000 mile service and was told that the brakes were wearing down, but ok for now. So I decided the next time I went in for an oil change, I would have them checked again. This past Tue 12/29, when leaving work, I noticed that my car did not stop on command like it usually would. I felt a little scraping and the car continued to roll a little with my foot on the brake. That same night, my 18 year old son went to make a grocery store run for me. He was driving faster than he should have, but the car did not stop, he ran through a stop sign, hit a tree all while having his foot on the brake. There are no tire marks on the ground which tells me the brakes did not stop the wheels from moving as they should have. My beautiful 9 month old Accord is gone. Totaled!!!

Honda truly needs to recall these cars and compensate me for my loss. Thank god my son is alive. But now I have NO CAR!

Well, Honda Accord 2.4L 4 Cyl LX-P needed new rear brakes at 31,000 miles. Unheard of...The dealership wanted $350.00 to fix the rears knowing that there is a problem with the brake system on the 2008, 2009, 2010 Accord....

So, I picked up brake parts at NAPA and fixed the pads for $40.Been having other problems with this car... I bought Honda due to their reliability. Guess Honda is wanting to be another GM and Chrysler style company...Anyways, I fixed the brakes sold the car and bought a Toyota Camry. So long Hondas...It will be a long time before I purchase another Honda. Probably never...

Accord EX 2.4L

I bought my first Honda in 2008, which is a 2008 Honda Accord. I heard how great these cars are/were. My father was a mechanic and growing he taught me a thing or two about vehicles. I started taking my NEW 2008 honda to the dealership for routine oil changes. I do believe they were suppose to check my brakes, but I started hearing a noise coming from the rear brakes, but couldn't believe that the rear brakes would go out before the front brakes. I ignored it, and checked the front brakes, they happen to be fine. So I decided to take my car to the dealership again, and they told me that I needed rear brakes. I asked them about rear being the secondary brakes and they looked at me like I was crazy. I bought a new car so that I don't have to be fixing cars every other weekend. The dealership failed to mention there was a complaint on these cars. I decided not to pay 200.00 for a brake job. I decided to drive to the local parts store and pick up a pair of deluxe brake pads. I will do the job my self and save me some money.

I am hoping that Honda will recall the brakes, that way I could get reinbursed. If not, I will be one very upset first generation Honda owner. Honda should really do something about this problem, by first acknowledging it then followed with some action. Screw you Honda!!!! I am not just another dumb customer! I know my way around cars........ugh!

Having heard nothing but good things about Hondas, I bought a brand new 2008 Honda Accord in August of 08. I am extremely disappointed in the rear brakes on this vehicle. I cannot believe that my previous car, a 1994 Ford Probe, had better brakes, and was a pretty much worthless car. Honda needs to recognize the inferior brakes on these models and they need to make it right for their customers. I will probably not buy another Honda after this. I have 27,600 miles on this car, mainly freeway miles, and the brakes should have lasted at least twice as long. Count me in for a class action lawsuit. The longer it takes for Honda, the more brake jobs they will need to pay on. Come on Honda-show some integrity!

Also experiencing the rear brake wear on my 2008 Accord EX-L. Under 20,000 miles with a mix of city/highway, the rear brakes are pretty much shot. One thing I can add though, is that I also have a 2007 EX-L Accord and I noticed when I changed the brakes over the summer that the rear pads wore MUCH faster than the front. I'm guessing that's part of the design? Either way it is annoying. That and trying to take out those two screws that hold the rotors on. ALMOST impossible to get them out. Ended up using an impact with a special philips bit. A simple retaining clip would suffice.

Same issue. 22k rear brakes, I asked how does Honda get a way with changing the laws of physics.........cars when braking dive FORWARD and 99.99% of us replace front brakes because of this......but rears? Dealer just nodded and gave me the 800 number. No resolution from Honda. This is our second Honda since 2003, first was an odyssey. What Honda needs to understand is that folks like me that lease, (and pretty much anyone who buys new), expect near zero repairs. Thats why we buy NEW. for wear and tear items, fine, no problem, but this is no wear and tear item. They either screwed up in design somehow, or more likely, specified a very cheap rear pad because most wear happens up front. My local mechanic, (non Honda), also said that the sliders were loose which should have been dealt with immediately but were obviously not.

Great car! Unusual to replace rear breaks at 24,000 miles. Dealer covered 50% so my cost was $100. Contacted Honda but they were not willing to help. Lucky that the dealer had compassion and worked it out. The problem I have with this is that Honda knows it is a problem but they have not issued a service advisory to inspect the brakes when the cars are in for service. My car was in 3 weeks earler for service and they should have inspected the breaks at that time since the problem occurrs around 20,000 miles which I was beyond. I only found out after the brake started to grind and squeak a few weeks later. At least let the customers know so they can deal with it. I am guesing that if they did issue a service advisory, it would be an admission of a problem with the car. Honda builds a great car so this is out of charactor for them to look the other way. I asked Honda if another pad was available and they said that it is not at this time but maybe in the future. I am guesing that in another 15,000 miles, I will need to replace my brakes again. On a side note, the brakes do work very well and I hope that they do not engineer that out of the car.

First, please be sure to save the original copies of all of your Braking System-related receipts. You may need them in the future.

Girard Gibbs LLP and co-counsel filed a class action lawsuit in September 2009 against Honda, related to the rear Braking Systems in the 2008-2009 Honda Accord vehicles. The class action lawsuit against Honda seeks certification of a nationwide class on behalf of owners and lessees of 2008-2009 Honda Accord vehicles. The case is pending in the United States District Court for the Central District of California before Judge Morrow.

The complaint alleges that the vehicles suffer from a defect that causes premature rear brake pad wear. The complaint also alleges that Honda concealed the defect in the Accord Braking System and fails to repair the Braking System defect under warranty.

If you own a 2008-2009 Honda Accord and paid for a rear brake pad repair you may be a member of the proposed class. You do not need to take any further action at this time. Again, please hold onto any repair records or receipts. We will keep you informed via email of the status of the case.

If you have any questions about the case, please feel free to reply to this email or call (866) 981-4800.

Just adding to the list of complaints. Annoying noise coming from rear driver side. I live in the city but I'm extremely gentle on my brakes. At 27,500 I got the crazy noise. Dealer said these cars are known to have rear brake problems.

Should have replaced it myself, but I forked over the 225 for convenience. I'd love to know what we can do about this.

Update from Jan 7, 2010: Great news! Got a call from a Honda rep from Honda of America. He is well aware of this site and their engineers are "currently working" on this issue now. His explanation for the problem was that the new safety design that come standard with the car (vehicle stability assist, traction control, anti-lock, etc) have had an unanticipated affect on the life of the rear break pads and their engineers are evaluating different fixes for the issue.

I mentioned that I see this as 50% of the life I expect out of rear brakes and he said that he could refund me for 50% of the price I paid. I am told a check is in the mail for $112.50. I'm ok with this as long as they either 1. Fix the problem or 2. Give me 50% off the next time.

It took about three weeks to get to this point. I was asked to fax in my receipts about a week after first contacting Honda.

Thanks to everyone for complaining. It really made a difference! Thanks also to Honda for caring (a little bit :).

I'll add my voice to the masses, I was shocked to see this many complaints about this problem.

30,000 (mostly highway) miles and the rear brake pads are shot, I was also told that my front rotors were warped ($200.00 to fix that problem). Was told I probably had to "stop hard" and that caused the rotors to warp - well excuse me thats what brakes are for. So am I to think then it wouldn't happen again -

I have NEVER had to replace the brake pads this soon on a new car! And from this site, I see now where this is something I get to look forward to every year or so.

The reason I bought a freaking Honda is because of its track records. I purchases the new 2008 body style in Nov of 08. Brought the car in to do a oil change and basic maintenance and they tell me that my brakes will not pass inspection. So at 18000, and 386$ later, I had the rear brakes replaced. I spoke with everyone I could from that dealer. I ended up speaking with the technician who worked on the car who pulled me aside and told me that I should make a formal complaint to HONDA CORP because this was the 10th car in the past year that she alone had this problem with and that the new braking system was flawed and that the only way to address the problem was to report it.

This is the 1st time ever that I have has to go back to a dealer for a new car with such low miles. soon after 6500 miles the brakes were not smooth and at 9000 miles Rear brakes started squealing and got worse every mile. Took the car to Honda Dealer and they said I had bad driving habits. I showed them TSB 09-096 and they agreed to change the front brakes based on information form the TSB. Then they showed me the Rear brakes that were metal to metal - and offered to change the pads at 50% discount.

I know this is not normal behavior of any dealer unless they know there is an issue with all the cars of that model.I just called Honda USA and they said someone will make a decision for the 50% that I paid - and will get back to me in a few days. I asked what do I do when I go back in for the next Rear brake pad change in a few months? Why don't you have a recall - I should not be going to the dealer every 6 months to have the brakes changed.

Everyone should start posting their brake issue all over the net and file complaints with BBB - Honda should make a recall and fix this problem. They have known about is for 18 months now - and instead of making a recall, they offer 50% discount on new pads. This is shameful. No one has time to go to dealer every few miles and get this problem fixed - even for free.
