Heard a light tinty scraping noise coming from the back passenger side wheel. Took it in to the Honda Dealership thinking a pad clip came loose or such. The noise didn't occur 100% of the time, just occasionally on the highway. When I applied brake, the noise would go away. This was explained exactly to the dealership and even wrote exactly so on my receipt. After checking my car, they said the back brakes needed to be replaced. Funny thing is, during my 26,000 oil change, they mentioned nothing about the brakes being ready for replacement. Now I'm at 31,000 and suddenly the wear indicator is going off?

Having brakes replaced at 31k may not be completely outrageous, although, I wouldn't consider myself a person who brakes hard or rough. The thing I don't understand is that he said my front brakes are perfectly fine! How can the front outlast the rear? Ridiculous.

Same problem as everyone else, premature rear brake wear The servicing dealer advised I was lucky as he sees most 2008 Accords come in around 15,000 miles for rear brakes. I wrote to Honda USA detailing my complaint as well as the Better Business Bureau. Also sent a copy of my complaint to the NHTSA. Honda USA called and advised this issue was not covered under the warranty and would not accept this issue as premature wear and or faulty engineering/manufacturing. As a result of this issue I have decided to discontinue my association with Honda in as much as I will no longer have the vehicle serviced by Honda nor will I purchase another Honda vehicle in the future. I will also make my friends aware of this issue.

My brake problems started last month and I knew it was coming. I read all the complaints and started driving with my radio off. The noise was very incredible and embarrassing. Decided to take my car to the dealership. Not to mention I paid for a extended ripoff warranty and maintenance package. So to hear the service manager tell me I need rear brakes was disgusting. The total 250.00 big ones.

Update from Jan 12, 2010: Update took my car to local shop and got it fixed. They have fixed 30+ 08 accords with same problem.

I am so thankful for forums like this. My rear brake pads were completely worn on my car which I purchased brand new in 2008. I had only 23,000 miles on my car. Someone at work said there is no way rear pads should be bad this soon so I googled and found this forum and I am so glad I did. This is a known issue with Honda and they need to step up and fix it. I went to pick my car up today and told them that I was not going to pay for an issue that they know about. Dealer in Olathe was helpful and called Honda Headquarters but was only able to get me a 50% discount. So I paid it because I found another site and there might already be a class action lawsuit going on. I have contacted the lawyer and I will keep you all posted. I DO NOT want to replace these pads every 15k. HONDA MUST recall these cars and get the issue fixed correctly and make things right with their loyal customers. I am so furious. I hope this has helped someone else. If you own a car like this get the rear pads checked immediately and have them replaced and make Honda pay for it. If you wait too long further damage can be caused. This is such a good looking car and I wish it ran as good as it looks. I know Hondas are well made cars but they are slacking now and they must make things right.

I brought my 2008 Accord EX-L V6 in for an oil change. The car was purchased mid-October 2008 and this particular service was done in November 2009. I also had a rattle from the rear window addressed as this was irritating. They fixed the rattle under warranty with felt seeing that this was a common issue. When I went to pay the bill, the employee mentioned that my rear brakes have 20-30% life remaining. I thought that this was unusual for rear brakes and especially since out of the 24,000 kms, most of it is highway driving. When I asked about the rear brakes, the employee simply stated that this was common for this model Accord. I also want to mention that there is a shimmy when I brake moderately from one or both of the front rotors (like a warped disk).

Out of all the cars that I have owned, rear brakes have always outlasted the front. Honda has to own up to the problem (design failure) otherwise face backlash for its inaction. It is shameful to hide behind the 'normal wear and tear' argument when there are so many similar complaints.

Brake PADS worn at 18,000??? Seriously??? I'm such a light driver - never in past cars have had to change the brake pads even in double the time and miles than these 2008 Honda pads. Ridiculous.

Apparently Honda made the pads thinner than typical - I think just another way for the company to make money. Sad that I'm going to have to change my pads every 1.5 years.

I've had Fords and Dodges with better brake pads than Honda. Very disappointing.

Need new brakes on my 2008 Accord at 17k, My dealer Pottstown Honda tried to work with me and acknowledged there is an issue with the brake system. American Honda offered to pay for half the brake costs. I refused as this does not solve the problem only serves a temporary solution and have filed complaints with the PA Attorney General since I do not want to replace my brakes every year. I like my Accord otherwise and have owned multiple Accords but I may never buy another after this. I will take the suggestion of the others on here and file complaints with BBB and NTSB. I am having the same problem as others have. It started making a squeaking noise a week ago. found that lot of other people have the same problem. but c'mmon Honda rear breaks wearing out at 24K miles.....give me a break....I called honda - and the rep said it's a kown problem......hello!.........if you know it then fix the damn thing.....there's no difference between you and GM/Ford, the only difference is that they are expert at rip off and honda is getting there. gone are the days when honda used to be a synonym for quality.

my dealer - Martin Main Line Honda - Ardmore, PA said that honda has a assistance program and will pay 50% of it but only if the brakes wear out by 20K miles WTF, so 25K miles is a problem ....you mean to say that breaks shouldn't have lasted another 5K miles....Please.....

dealer just called me and said honda has turned down the request for support and they arae aware of the issue but you will have to pay out of pocket......and on top off this he needs to resurface the rotor because if we don't then he will not guarantee if the squeaking noise starts again.

Honda......this is it....no more of Honda....I should have gone with Nissan or Toyota.

Update from Dec 28, 2009: Girard Gibbs LLP has filed a class action lawsuit against Honda for premature brake wear in Accord 2008 models.

I have owned my 2008 Honda Accord since February of 08'. From the beginning, the brakes made a lound noise when coming to a stop. I took the car back to Gwinnett Place Honda and the technicians assured me it was normal. So, I've been driving with this explanation in the back of my mind but never really 'accepting' what I was told. The technicians stated the new model is heavier and therefore the brakes will make more noise. Well, on Friday, November 25th, 2009, I hear what sounds like a 'jingling' noise coming from the rear passenger side when the vehicle is in motion. The noise went away so I thought maybe something got caught under the wheel well from going through 'construction'. Well, Friday, December 4, 2009, I hear the same noise (while in motion), but louder and seemingly coming from both rear 'tires'. So, I start looking around, because sure, it wasn't my NEW car sounding like that, and noticed this MAC truck coming up on my right and I was like "Damn, that must be him making that noise". Well, he passed me and I still heard the noise(yes, I know I'm 'slow' :o) I roll my windows down and the noise was INSANE!

I take the car to the dealership and was told my rear breaks needed to be replaced. Me, being a bargain hunter, go to Kauffman Tire and was told by a technician the 08' & 09' Honda Accords have a 'known rear break issue'. Of course, the technician at Gwinnett Place Honda in Duluth, GA did not inform me of this issue. Obviously, I have to get my breaks fixed but I don't want to take it to a Honda dealership because I would imagine they are going to put the same type of brakes on. Not only is it dangerous, but the loud noise is embarrassing. My current milleage is 25,741.

My name in Mickey. I am retired living on a fixed income. I live in a very "automotive" town in Michigan. When I purchased my Honda I put up with a lot of harassment from my friends about buying foreign, but I held my ground basing on my decision on information I had read. It turns out my friends were right. Around 25,000 miles by brakes went bad. I took it to the dealership, of course it's out of warranty and that was that. Although the dealership tried to help Honda, blamed it on my driving. The majority of the miles put on my car are highway miles so I know that isn't true. I personally called Honda, they gave me a case number and that was that. I was very surprised to find that I am not alone, but now even more disappointed in Honda; with this many complaints on one site (and I noticed there are more) Honda should do the right thing a declare a recall. It's not like the radio isn't working, bad brakes present a big risk. Although I realize there is no longer such a thing as a 100% purebred American car, I should have gone to GM, Ford or Chrysler - I won't make that mistake again. I AM NOT A QUIET, MEEK CUSTOMER - EVERYONE I KNOW AND MEET HEARS MY STORY.

Just had my rear breaks and rotors replaced. I was also told this is normal on this car, and also that mine had lasted longer than most, I guess because mine were metal on metal! I was told 15,000 miles is normal for rear breaks on the 08 honda. What! That is because of honda's new breaking system. (Definite design flaw!) Apparently the brunt of the breaking power is coming from the rear breaks now, at a ratio of 60-40. I also wanna know if anyone else had issues with uneven wear on their rear brake pads. Mine looked fine on the outside but the inside was metal to metal. Honda NEEDS to fix this or they will be losing lots of customers!!! Myself included!

I purchased my Honda Accord in November of 07'. In November of 08' my back brakes went at 21k. I had them replaced and spoke with the service guy at Honda who said there was nothing they can do. It was normal wear and tear. I don't think so. I contacted the Honda headquarters and all they did was document my file. I was very annoyed, but let it go. Now in 09', my back brakes go yet again at another 21k! Again I contacted the Honda headquarters, and once again they said they would not my file. Well I had a few choice words for them. When I asked them if a manager could please get back to me, they stated the manager would tell me the same thing they did. What is that? I have never been so disappointed in a company as I am in Honda. They had good customer service when purchasing the car, why not now when there is a big problem going on? I have also contacted the BBB and am awaiting the outcome. If there are enough of us with the same problem complaining, why isn't something being done?

I have has my 2008 Honda Accord since March of 2008. At 23000 miles, I started hearing a noise coming from the dirver's side rear tire. I called the Honda dealership I bought the car from and was informed that my rear brakes probably needed to be replaced and the cost would be $80.00 for the diagnostics and 200.00 for the brakes to be replaced. They stated that the rear brakes should last for 40-60k miles but are not. The service tech told me that a lot of people were having this problem, but there was no recall on the brakes as of yet. I called American Honda and was told that they were not receiving a large volume of compliants about the brakes and there was nothing they could do. I informed her of this website with over 500 complaints listed about this very problem and let her know that most of the people listed on this site had written that they had contacted American Honda. I am very frusterated with this brake issue as I have owned 6 other cars and never had issues like this before. I have NEVER had any problems getting anything fixed on a car that was under 36k miles and under warranty. I hope they will issue a recall soon. Unitl then, I will repair my brakes and continue to write and complian to anyone who will listen.

I find it disturbing and quite interesting that after only 16,400 mi my rear brake pads/discs were totally worn to the point that I would be destroying my rotors within two days time. My car is a year and 3 months off the lot. I'd noticed squealing with the brakes which I was told was normal. When it persisted I was then told that there was too much oil on the calipers (or some other part), and they'd wiped it down to eliminate some of that. How is that I've had Honda's and Toyota's that were driven for MILES, and YEARS before a brakes issue even began to arise? I also find it interesting that the dealership offered a 50% discount up front (before I even responded to the news that I needed new brakes) for the work to be done "because of the low mileage". If this were something related to 'normal' wear and tear, I highly doubt it that they'd have offered any sort of 'deals'. Dealerships are known for 'raping' you with ANY work they do to your vehicle. They charge up the wazoo just to look @ ur vehicle. Now the cost of these repairs was supposed to be somewhere around $225 and he gave it to me for $99. After speaking with family and friends I plan on returning to the dealership to inquire about this issues. There is obviously something much more serious underlying that created this issue so soon. I'm waiting on a recall... It seems like everyone that has posted this same exact issues has pretty much gotten nowhere with filing complaints... I'm at a loss here... can we say WTF?!

I started hearing squealing from my rear brakes at around 20,000 miles (31,600 kms). I took it to a Honda dealer only to find out that my brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced. Luckily, the dealer will replace the rotors under warranty, but not the pads. The total cost is $180 to replace just the two rear brake pads. I am definitely writing a formal letter to Honda Canada to address this issue and get a settlement for them. There is no way I am paying almost $200 every 20,000 miles! Good thing that my car is leased and lease is expiring in 2.5 years. After lease is done, I am getting a Toyota Camry or Mazda 6.

This is my fourth Accord and I will never buy another one after seeing that everyone else has had a similar experience. At the 5,000 service, I reported that there was a squeak in the brakes. The dealership replaced the front rotors and pads and the rear pads under warranty. I was told at the 15,000 service that the rear pads were wearing again. At 20,000 the front pads were down to 8mm and the rear were down to 3mm. The dealership wanted $205 to replace the rear pads. I asked the guy at the dealership and he also told me that they were using soft pads in the new cars. I purchased ceramic lifetime pads and will be replacing them this weekend. I have had other vehicles that I have put almost 100,000 miles on without replacing brakes, etc. I had considered a Pilot as my next car, but will be visiting Toyota instead...
