  • 22,000 miles

I have had a problem with the rear brakes, when I took the car in for the 6,000 mile oil change I ask them to check the brakes that sometime they felt like they were sticking. They checked them and said no problem. So I just thought that this was a new car and maybe the brakes had to wear in a little. So now we are at 22,000 miles and the car is really making alot of noise so i took it in to get checked and they said they rear brake pads needed to be replaced.

I have had 3 Hondas and never had any problems with premature brake pads wearing out. The service tec said he would call American Honda but that he didn't think that they would do anything but say that the pads wore out. He called with no luck and then I called and talked to them for about 45 minutes with no luck. The Tec also told me that he has replaced lots of rear brake pads on the 2008 Accord between 15,000 and 25,000 miles.

Honda changed the way the cars brake system works and also they have changed the pads to be more enviromental friendly.

I suggest everyone call North America Honda and complain and get a case number so that if they have a recall or decided to help with the cost you are on the list.

As a group we could have a SCREW HONDA DAY and walk with signs saying Do Not Buy a Honda Accord unless you want to buy brake pads every 20,000 miles or sooner.

2008 Honda Accord LX-P with auto transmission. Only 17,000 miles. Honda dealer tells me the rear brake pads are at 2mm and need to be replaced. Asks if I do a lot of driving on hills? You've got to be kidding me. Strictly highway miles. How is this possible? This is a design problem and Honda needs to do something about it; otherwise this is my last Honda purchase.

My 2005 got 65,000 miles before fronts or backs were needed. The 2008 has a horrible braking system. The rotors are so thin they need replacement each time also. I don't think this will bode to well for a re-sale values on these. Can't believe I only got about 17 months on a my back brakes. Very frustrating!

very disappointed....we have owned and leased many Honda vehicles...seeing all of these posts is a real wake up call. Rear brakes needing replacement at 30k with the majority of the miles on the highway is nonsense. My son is very handy and says that we can replace the rear pads ourselves. I am blown away by the factory's reluctance to address a flaw like this one.

I am writting this in dealer's waiting room. Same rear brake problem, need to replace @ 28K. The dealer is fully aware of this problem, but I need to pay. They will pay 50% if it is under 20K (Honda policy).

The main reason for this post is to get public awareness of this issure. Being a previous owner of GM Chev, problem with Dex-Cool (google it!), it takes more than complaints to settle the problem. Here are some suggestions:

1. Go to other site, for example Edmunds forum for Maintenance and Repair: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f1675a0!make=Honda&model=Accord&ed_makeindex=.f1675a0 You can join the discussion in the forum, and get some new info.

2. Go to Edmunds forum for Honda Accord Prices Paid and Buying Experience: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef006d2!make=Honda&model=Accord&ed_makeindex=.ef006d2 Let the problem be known to potential new buyers. This may have more impact to Honda.

3. Find/join Class Action Law suit for it. Dex-Cool is settled after the law suit. Is there one for this yet?

4. Create ONE yahoo group, so the 600+ people here and other complaint sites can join. Make our voice heard.

Update from Dec 9, 2009: 5. Don't forget to file a formal complaint with Honda America: 800-999-1009

Update from Dec 10, 2009: I found out that there is already a class action law suit by Girard Gibbs LLP. The same firm did GM Dex-Cool law suit. Please fill out form on their web site. It is very likely Honda will settle the suit before trial.

Update from Dec 14, 2009: 6. File a safty complaint with The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI), an office within the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

Update from Dec 19, 2009: I heard from other sites that there is a new rear brake pad from honda, part # 43022-TA0-A51, replacing the original part # 43022-TA0-A00. I checked my receipt, it is the new one.

Update from Nov 10, 2010: Good news to some. Honda is offering some relief. When I replaced the rear brakes in Dec 09 and filed a complaint with Honda, the Honda policy is offering 50% off repair cost if mileage is less than 20k. I called America Honda last week. Now Honda will reimburse $150 of my repair cost of $253 even my mileage was 28k.

I'm not going to elaborate with 20 paragraphs here but this brake issue is BS and i've got the same problem as everyone else. I drive cautiously and had to replace rear pads at 22k miles. I spoke to several Schaller Honda technicians and all confessed that they made a mistake in manufacturing and manufactured the rear pads almost half the thickness of front pads and with the increased weight in car and braking differential the rear pads get chewed up.

Honda should provide vouchers for approximately 5 rear brake pad replacements which is an approximate number of how many more times I will have to replace these damn brakes compared to another equivalent vehicle. Don't know why I didn't stick with a Toyota.

This is my 2nd Rear Break replacement only after a year of changing the first. Really annoying to change rear breaks every year! Never had a car like this before and I was expecting more from a car like this. My front brakes are still fine which is what it should be. I have told all of my relatives, friends and anyone who ask how the car is about the breaks and will not give any recommendations anymore. In fact I told them not to buy the Accord period.... Honda need to take responsibility of this problem and address it properly!

I hope the class action will go through and I will return this car in a heartbeat if I can.

I have 26,000 miles on my car and I am on my THIRD set of rear brake pads. Like clockwork, it's every 12,000 miles (every other oil change) I have to get my rear brake pads replaced. I contacted BBB and went through the whole lemon law process.......During arbitration the representative that was sent out from Honda stated that there was no recalls, service bulletins, or problems with the rear brake pads of the 2008 Honda Accord. I brought to his attention that Carmicahel Honda, where I get my car serviced, spoke to American Honda Corporation and confirmed that Honda was aware that there is an issue with the rear brake pads wearing out prematurely, which is why my third set of rear brake pads were replaced for free. His comment back to me was that he was not aware of any problems and had no idea who Carmichael Honda had spoke too AND that just because there is an issue does not mean there is a problem. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!! Then he asked the arbitrator to make all the internet complaints that I brought in for documentation to not be considered because they weren't dealing with my car specifically. So I asked the representative from Honda how many complaints have been made to Honda Corporation directly, he said he did not have that number.

I do not know the outcome of the arbitration yet, but I was told that I was only the second person to take Honda to arbitration due to my rear brakes wearing out prematurely.........AND they are SOOOOOOO noisy! I brought this up to and was referred to my owners manual where it states that it is normal to hear "occasional" brake noise. The arbitrator asked Honda to please describe what occasional means........GUESS WHAT........he could not answer the question! Such a joke........ A representative from the Department of Consumer Affairs was there as well. I was informed that arbitration was not the last course of action I could take. I will add another post when I have more information.

Update from Dec 6, 2009: It's official.......Honda has been ordered to repurchase my car. In my case, the BBB did feel that this problem effected the use, safety and value of my vehicle. I have been a Honda owner for so many years, I have no idea what I am going to purchase now. Unfortunately, I will not buy Honda again.

Update from Jan 11, 2010: I mentioned in an earlier post that Honda has been ordered to repurchase my car due to the brake issues. I had to go through arbitration, but in the end I won! They are repurchasing my car next week, so I will finally be rid of it! I was always so concerned with my brakes and I didn't think anything else could go wrong with my car. I was SO wrong. My car is due for an oil change, it's at 15% oil life. I had an oil change about 5,000 miles ago and usually get it done when it reaches 10%. Yesterday while I was driving my red oil light flickered, so I waited a few hours and checked my oil. Nothing! The very tip of my dip stick had just a little bit of oil in it. Are you kidding me! I took it in and had oil put in in my car. I asked if a new car should burn through all it's oil like this, and I was told absolutely not.....even an old car shouldn't burn through oil like that. So, just as an FYI, something else to watch for in these cars.

I am another consumer who had to replace pads and rotor for my Honda. Honda is well aware of the problem, as well as my dealership. They assure me there will be a resolution soon to this problem. Have to pay $338.00 for work on a car that is less than 2 years old with only 25K miles on it is very frustrating. The way Honda handles this problem may "make or break" them as far as me buying a Honda in the future.

I have owned 2 previous Hondas and am amazed at the brake wear on my Honda Accord. I had to replace the rear brake pads and have the rotors ground twice now. The first time was at 24K and now again at 40K. This is ridiculous. The dealer and Honda corporate are not saying anything about this problem. I tried to get it covered under warrantee, but they wouldn't even consider it. I drive mostly on highways and don't slam ro ride my brakes. No idea why the rear pads are wearing our so quickly. All I know is that this will be the last Honda I buy.

I have a 2008 Honda Accord and have the same complaint as everyone else. Don't get me wrong I have owned nothing but Hondas for the last 10 years. But today was a huge pain in the keister. I went in because my tires were wearing weird and they said I didn't have them rotated correctly, which could have been (the guys that switched out my snow tires didn't measure them and put the original tires on wrong) but then they told me my rear brakes were completely shot and they needed to be replaced now they wanted to charge me $250.00 for the repair. We called BS on this one because I have owned several Hondas previously and never had an issue with brakes. I called another repair place and they said there is no way that this is possible and if anything were to be wrong with the brakes it would be in the front. When my husband and I approached Honda on this the tech told me that this is how Honda is and very common "normal wear and tear" another tech quickly called corporate and then they replaced them for free. It seems like I am going to be having this problem every 20+K (till I sell the car.) Anyone need a car it's in good shape.... it even has new rear brakes. :)

OEM rear brake pads needed replacement at 28k miles.

After checking this site and reading the Motor Trend long-term update on the 2008 Accord, seems I am in good company.

Honda dealer wanted $45 to diagnose the problem and another $180 to replace the rear pads. Dealer would not consider a warranty claim as this is a normal maintenance item. Did the work myself for $65.

Pad wear-out at 28k miles on the rears? Duh.

Also called Honda of America who did nothing.
