  • 21,600 miles

C'mon Honda step up to the plate. I only have 21K miles on a 2008 Honda. I went in for routine maintenance and the rear brakes had only 20% left (compared to front brakes at 90%). I will have to have the brakes replaced. When I called Honda to see if they would cover it, they said they are sticking with their warranty that does not cover normal "wear and tear." Sorry but new brakes at 20K is not normal wear and tear. I haven't had any other problems with the car and have owned it since I brought it brand new in February '08. This is very annoying!!!!!

Accord EX-L 4 cyl

I originally had problems at 13,000 miles when I applied the brakes it shook and pulled to the side. I took it to the dealer and he said it was not covered under warranty since it is considered normal wear and tear. The bakes have always squeaked and he said there is nothing they can do about it. Yesterday I heard an odd noise coming from the back tire well. I took it to Midas Brakes and was told that my brakes are rubbing metal to metal. It cost me $211.00 which they give a life time warranty on the pads. I have owned several Honda in the past and have never had to replace brakes before 30K miles. I plan to purchase an American made car in the future. It's the American thing to do besides they offer a much better warranty.

Accord LX V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 19,000 miles

I purchased a new 2008 Honda Accord in January 2008, after having much success with this model in the past. However, 7 months later (August 08), I was replacing the rear brakes at only 19,000 miles. I have owned cars since age 16 and NEVER replaced brakes until at least 60,000 miles. Seven months later (March 2009), I was replacing rear brakes again at 39,000 miles. Each time I replaced brakes it cost me between $205- 215. After they were replaced a second time, I almost immediately noticed that they were not as reliable for stopping as they had been in the past. In addition, I had picked up a slight vibration from the steering wheel each time they were mildly applied. I took it to the Honda dealership for an oil change and had them check the brakes and was informed that they were fine. However, the vibration has continued to increase and the braking capacity has continued to diminish as well. I am now at 57,000 miles and expecting to replace brakes for a third time. This is the biggest piece of sh*t I have ever owned. I still own a 1994 Toyota Tercel with 108,000 miles that has only had new brakes around the 80k mark and it is more reliable that this new Honda Accord.

I have spoke with Honda about this problem and was told that the area I live in is hard on brakes, etc. I quickly stopped them and informed them that the car is a commuter car and I have had the exact same commute for over four years. The 2006 Honda Accord that I traded in with 94,000 miles had brakes replaced only once. Now, I have this piece of sh*t, the same commute, and going on my 3rd set of brakes. After mentioning these facts, the Honda dealership finally advised that they are in receipt of several complaints and that it is being investigated. However, no recall for this defective and unsafe braking system has been made.

I contacted the dealer again to see if any of the latest models have a braking system that is different than what I currently have. I had thought that I would try and trade up for a new model in order to alleviate me of my problem. However, I was told that the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Honda Accord vehicles have the same braking system. SO, DONT COUNT ON A RECALL OF THIS PRODUCT BECAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE TO RECALL EVERY ACCORD from 2008 onward. TOO COSTLY IN AN ALREADY DIMINISHED MARKET. The dealership did tell me that Toyota also has the same braking system and experienced the same problems. I have not researched that at this time, but expect it was a ploy to keep me from trading in this piece of sh*t for a Toyota product. I COULD NOT BE ANYMORE DISSATISFIED WITH A PRODUCT. If I end up in an accident on the interstate and can trace it to defective brakes, I would be getting an attorney for that.

In my opinion, Honda has no desire to address this problem. I have contacted Honda from the number located in the back of the handbook to advise them. I have also contacted the safety board in an effort to get someone to pressure the company into addressing the problem. If Honda can not accept responsibility for a faulty product, then there are plenty of other automakers dying for your business during this economic downturn. Good luck my fellow Accord owners. Let's keep the pressure on and hope for the best.

Seems I have joined the elite here... 600+ Honda Accord brake problems. I want to thank everyone who posted, I printed them out all your complaints and gave them to my dealer. On Halloween, my car started making a screeching noise at low speed (15-40mph with gas pedal applied.) Off to the dealer I went. There was some eye popping after I was told the brakes were that way by design and I handed over the ream of complaints. In any case, I needed new rear brakes at 27,500 miles. The repair was $170 after some haggling and a discount. By the way, if you are in central Texas, Howdy Honda is an outstanding dealer. Now hopefully, Honda will own up to their poor design and have a recall.

We took our 08 Honda Accord in for our free State inspection and we were told it had failed due to worn brakes on the rear of the car. It has only 23,000 miles on it. I was told it would cost 169.00 to repair. I told them ot put a rejection sticker on it and I would take it to my own car repair shop and get their opinion and have them work in it if in fact it actually needed them. After I picked the rejected car up from the dealership, it started making a grinding noise, so to keep from doing damage to the car I returned and had them replace the brakes and inspect the car. They gave me old brakes back (if in fact they are off of my car? who knows?). After reading on line, there are many complaints concerning brake problems.

This may be my last Honda.

I went into have the oil changed and tires rotated and was told my rear brakes needed to be replaced ASAP. I'm really upset about having to spend $200 on breaks on a car that I've had for 14 months. The services tech at the dealer said this is common in newer cars and the breaks will just last for 25,0000 miles. So this will be an annual expense. I buy cars and drive them for years. In the past when I've purchased a new car I only have to change the oil and rotate the tires for the first few years. I bought a Honda for its reliability. Guess I made the wrong decision.

Accord LX

I purchased a new 2008 Honda Accord LX for my daughter to take off for her first year of college. I bought a Honda because I've owned several of them throughout my life and have always found them to be reliable and safe. I've also driven them well over 100,000 miles. To send my only child off to school was hard enough but I had to make sure she was safe coming to and from school. She called me complaining that her car was making an awful squealing noise whenever she put it in reverse. When she came home for a recent visit, we took it to our local mechanic to have him take a look at it. Imagine my surprise when he said her rear brake pads needed replacing. At 27,000 miles! I was shocked to say the least and googled the problem. I found this website and was blown away by the number of folks out there with the same problem. Honda needs to right this wrong by recalling these cars. If not, I'm afraid I'm done with Honda... along with most of the other listers here.

I have the same problem. I hear a hissing sound whenever I brake. I will take it to the dealer next week but I am afraid that they are going to replace it with another crappy brake system.

Anyway, has anyone heard of any recall from Honda? Has anyone had a success story after replacing under the warranty from the dealer? Has anyone contacted BBB (Better Business B) on this issue?

Same as everyone else. Brakes started making noises when I would back up, took it in, they said I needed new rear brakes. Service person said I was "lucky", my brakes lasted a whopping 31K miles. She said she has been seeing them at 12 to 15K needed to be replaced. This is ridiculous and Honda needs to make it right. I have had it only a year and it will be my last Honda only due to the lack of resolution on the company's part. Any company that thinks they can screw their customers like this and expect them to come back again are kidding themselves. HONDA GET A FREAKING CLUE!!

Update from Nov 17, 2009: This is what I did - this happened to me two weeks ago, did online research, saw all the complaints. Took my one year old Honda Accord to Nissan and traded it in for an Altima. People - if you can afford to, GET RID OF THE ACCORDS, if enough people start trading in this car Honda will HAVE to fix it, but it will be too late for them because they have lost so many customers for life. Dont give them any more of your hard earned money. I am much happier now with my new NON HONDA vehicle.

I am also one of the unlucky ones that bough Honda Accord 2008. Now I am at 21K miles and started to hear the hissing sounds from the brakes. It is the same sound that comes from big trucks when they brake right on the side. But the sound of the car is a little lower than the trucks.

Anyway, I called the dealer and he said that they can replace it if the car is under 25K. This works for me but I am afraid that they are going to put some crappy brakes which will die in 3K miles.

Honda should take care of this problem. I cannot believe that Honda knows about this big problem and not taking steps. Has anyone talked or mailed to Honda officials? What is their reply on this issue?

Now the Honda dealership is playing stupid, they said it's "normal" for new brakes and rotors at 20,000 miles. Um NO it's not!!!! I told them about all the complaints and they said well until it's recalled it's normal. Other people were also in the dealership complaining about the same problem. They also said, well when you hit 40,000 miles you'll need new brakes and rotors again, it's how Hondas are. My family has had so many Hondas and this is the 1st ever of this problem. Accord EX 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,599 miles

At the 23k mile checkup the rear brakes pads showed excessive wear and they charged me $340 for the repair. As a professional mechanic myself, I know that for the REAR brakes to go bad at less than 25k miles is unheard of. On a new car, brakes, especially the rear should last 70k miles under normal driving patterns. There is obviously a design flaw in the brake system that needs to be addressed through a recall by Honda.

The service manager told me that the brakes are only rated for 20k miles! What crap. I'm going to start by filing a complaint with the company to try to get my money back, and I'll do my own maintenance from now on or find an independent mechanic for anything I can't do on my own.

Problem began as metal on metal grinding sound coming from the drivers side back wheel. I had to get my snow tires put on so I asked my local garage to have a look while the wheels were off. When the dealer was performing a free tire rotation they mentioned that the front brakes were just a tad from the wear bars indicators. I asked to see the brakes and they showed me the brakes. They recommended changing them now or within the next 2,000 miles. They said that the 2008 accords are all wearing through the the front brakes fast because they were designed to bear some of the stopping load. I was a bit irritated because my last truck went 60,000 mile before I had to replace its brakes.

So it sounds like metal on metal coming from the rear brakes. I figured it would go away in a couple of days as a result of sand or rocks maybe getting into my brakes. No, definitely not. Upon browsing the internet a little and speaking to my brother (who just replaced his 08 accord rear brakes) that the brakes are bad already. This is my fourth honda in 7 years and my first new Honda. I cannot believe that this is due to my driving. This is a Honda issue and the thousands of complaints all over the internet are proof of this. Now, if you are reading this, send a letter to Honda-USA (if American) or Honda in Japan. Then go to Better Business Bureau website. I believe it is BBB.org. and file a complaint with then. They communicate our complaints directly to Honda. If honda gets enough complaints they will recall the vehicles and replace the brakes. I will not pay to fix the brakes. I don't care if my wheels go flying off. Honda must do right by me this year or I will trade in my car for the altima coupe instead. Brakes and 18500 miles are not supposed to go together.

Accord EX 2.4L

This is starting to sound like a broken record but I have the exact same problem with my 2008 Accord. My wife told me several months ago that her car was making a noise in the rear. I drove it and told her that it was coming from the rear wheels. At this point it was not a screech but more of a rubbing sound. I could see the outside pads through the wheel and they looked fine. It had only 28,000 miles on it so I told her to take it to the dealership where we bought it. They could not find anything wrong with it and said that it was normal.

Today at 33,000 miles, the sound is worse so I removed the rear wheels. On both sides the outer pads still have @ 3/16"left while the inside pads are gone. The drivers side is already rubbing the rotor. Our driving habits include mostly highway miles so this is very unusual.

As soon as I saw this I knew there was a problem. I have been doing my own maintenance on vehicles since the early 80's and have never seen rear breaks wear this soon. My 2006 Accord has 72,000 miles and I have not changed any break pads.

Before I called any parts store, I Googled this problem and started reading all of these complaints. I then called my local Honda dealer and talked with a service Tech. He told me that he has seen a lot of these and now Honda has come out with a new part number for the rear pads. It is supposed to be composed of harder material and not wear as fast. He told me to bring the car in and they would turn the rotor and replace the pads under warranty.
