The engine in our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe SE 3.3L V6 has always had problems with lag/ hesitation when accelerating from a stop from the very beginning of ownership (first owner). This was always dismissed by Hyundai's mechanics as not actually existing, although it did lag constantly. I know many other have reported similar issues so, I include this only that it could potentially be an early sign of a manufacturers defect leading to larger problems later? Now, we regularly change the oil in our Santa Fe and have never seen a single warning light outside of tire pressure warnings. But on 7/29/21, with our vehicle just out of warranty at 112k miles, while accelerating to freeway speed from an on ramp at 60 mph multiple warning lights came and at the same time there was a very large bang from the engine and a large amount of smoke came from under the hood, enough to seriously affect the vision of drivers behind me. There was a very rapid lose of speed and I also observed things falling from the vehicle in the rearview. I luckily managed the vehicle to the shoulder and quickly got out. I thought vehicle was on fire, it may have been, the smoke kept up for 5-10 minutes. At this point the car would not start or run and a large pool of oil and or coolant formed underneath. It was towed to a Hyundai dealer and the prognosis was a broken connecting rod that had blew a large maybe 5" diameter hole through the bottom of the engine. And now, despite providing proof of recent oil changes, Hyundai has dismissed any manufacturing issues from causing the issue and sighting the problem was from lack of maintenance because of sludge in the engine. Although to my understanding sludge can also be produced rapidly when contaminants, like coolant, from bad valves or head gaskets, enter the oil. When I asked about this the technician literally just didn't answer. So, now we currently owe $7k on a vehicle needing repairs at the quoted price of $8-$14k and Hyundai has closed our case.

The engine lite came on, there was a lost of acceleration, the vehicle stalled when slowing down for a stop light or stop sign, There was a ping noise evident with the engine. I didnt trust the vehicle had it towed to the mechanic. The mechanic noted you have only two quarts of oil in the engine. This mechanic performed all routine maintenance, rotations, oil changes, checking fluids etc. There were no signs of oil leaks and or burning of oil with the exhaust. I then sent the car to the dealership for their own review. They confirmed the engine failure and the ping noise was the rod due to lack of oil. The dealership files a claim with Hyundai #PA102790, the claim was denied and still has not provided a reason for the oil loss which was the reason for the failure of the engine. There were no indicator lights noting low oil pressure or the engine is overheating, the engine lite came on in the morning and just like in A MANNER OF COUPLE OF HRS the engine started the symptoms noted above. The dealer ship gave Hyundai's complaint line, but after reading the problems associated with the Engines with the sante fe what is the point to call them?

Engine made a loud pinging noise. No warning lights appeared. I had it towed to dealer and they said that metal shavings were in the oil and the engine is shot and needs to be replaced. Car had 95,400 miles. Hyundai denied warranty because I was second owner after ignoring me for approximately one month and they never did reply to me directly, only to the dealer. How can so many Hyundai engines not last for over 100,000 miles?

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated while his wife was driving and approaching a red traffic light, the light turned green and the driver depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle started shaking abnormally and loss motive power, and stalled without warning. The driver attempted to restart the vehicle, but the vehicle would not restart. The contact arrived at the scene and attempted to jump-start the vehicle however, the vehicle failed to start up. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer who inspected the vehicle and diagnosed the failure as bearing failure which caused the shaking and stalling of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost of the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000.

The engine is consuming oil. After 1500 miles since my last oil change the oil DOES NOT show up on the oil stick. I have bought 3 brand new Hyundai Santa Fe's and 1 used Sonata, and NEVER had problems, except for my 2017 Santa Fe Sport, which I purchased at Dondelinger Hyundai in Baxter, Minnesota. I have also had to replace the backup camera. I have been to this dealer 4 times with no resolve! Please help!!

Let me say my Hyundai Santa Fe limited ultimate 3.3L AWD is a very good and reliable vehicle never had any issues or problems. Always kept it maintained. Well about a month ago I happen to start my Hyundai with the door open and I heard a sound just for a few seconds. The sound of a engine low on oil what could not believe it, it can't be. So I checked it and sure enough it needed oil, dumbfounded no oil puddles anywhere on the ground I was kinda in shock this has never happened didn't need to worry about that its never leaked oil and none of the gentlemen that changes the oil never said anything oil about the oil being low or oil on the engine. So I found out what kinda of oil it took and put about 3 1/2 quarters. Ok all better but still wondering how that happend just recently had the oil changed. Well the next morning I had to drive to san diego from long beach checked oil ok no problem all good. So im on the freeway driving throu oceanside camp pendleton and was getting hungry so the first exit after driving through oceanside I was going to stop and get something mind you no lights no smells no smoke. So I started to exit still everything just fine and when I slowed down coming to the light the engine stalled again no smoke no lights no smells. I was very suprised I tried to start it and nothing tried again and nothing. So I called aaa they looked at it and didn't see anything wrong but would not start. So I had them take it on a flat bed to Hyundai harbor off of cherry where it sits now. They looked at it and said the engine has seized up it will not rotate. Took oil pan off and found metal pieces and said the bearings went bad in turn burning up the oil and seized the engine. That pretty much it so is their anything that can be done to help me. I still owe around $19,000 on it and dont know what to do I'm glad I found that little article because I need help.

Ok from the start first let me state ive never had any problems what so ever with my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe limited ultimate 3.3L AWD none nothing so this was very strange because ive always maintained the vehicle oil changes every 3000 miles everything. So here we go one afternoon about a month ago I just happened to start my Hyundai with the door open and when I started it I heard a sound for like 2 seconds. The sound of an engine that was low of oil that tap tap tap I really could not believe that I just heard that I mean really could not believe it, it doesn't leak anything its never did that before. When I get the oil changed they don't say it was low on oil so I'm very dumbfounded at this point theirs no oil on the ground were it gets parked so I don't know why it did that. So I check the oil and sure enough it's low so I find out what kind of oil it takes and put 1 and then 2 and finally 3 kinda woundering and kinda in shock so to speak. Well the next day I checked the oil and it was still were itvshould be and had to drive to san diego from long beach were I live and it's not the first time I've made this drive mind you. So im off no lights on dash no smells no noises O smoke thinking cool so after passing throu oceanside I thought I'd get something to eat so I decided to take the first exit after oceanside camp pendleton so I get off and before I stop for the light the vehicle stalls what the this has never happened before not thinking anything bad because again no lights on dash no noses no smells no smoke no nothing. So I tried to start it and nothing try again and nothing lights on but does not want turn over. I have no idea what's going on because no lights on the dash came on theirs no smoke no loud noises or anything before it stalls just nice and quiet no smells nothing just the car getting real quiet. Well I tried a couple more times best regards eric

Noticed a knocking sound in the car. Thought something was loose. No warning lights to indicate an issue. The car stalled while driving down local streets as the car was decelerating. As long as the gas pedal was pumped the car continued to stay engaged. Car taken to mechanic by tow. The car was down 3.5 quarts of oil. Was overdue by approximately 1000 miles based on the recommendation of Hyundai manual.

15 miles from home in luverne, al 36049 on 2/1/2021, engine light came on and engine sounded like a mis-fire. Had oil changed at huffines Hyundai, plano, tx on 1/25/2021 and they did a recall of a 2nd ECM update of software. Emptied SUV out on 2/2, went to backup on 2/3 and white smoke pour out of exhaust. Tried to drive to mitchell Hyundai enterprise, al, vehicle died, had to have it towed to shop. Just found out today that my vehicle was part of the recall and that I should have been sent documentation about the engine issue. To date we have not received anything about it. According to what I read in the letter, my vehicle is not covered under the recall. The dealership says it is covered, but they have to wait for the company to make up it's mind. The recall may need to be expanded, my vehicle is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport 2.0T ultimate.

Vehicle has 57,000 miles, I was driving down the highway and the engine lost power and would not accelerate over 40. I stopped at gas station and filled up. When I started the car again it seemed ok, got back on the expressway and heard a loud noise and engine stopped. Had vehicle towed to dealership and they said the engine is blown and it needs a new engine. Only has 57,000 miles so should be under warranty. Dealer gave me a loaner and I drove home..car died in Michigan, they towed the car to greenbay Wisconsin to the nearest dealer, and I live in Chicago. The dealer called a few days later and asked for all oil change documentation.. most of it was in glove box which they found, had oil changed at Hyundai dealer in Illinois in March of 2020 right as pandemic started, car had 45,383 miles at that time. Dealer did not use synthetic oil according to receipt which is strange because manufacturer requires synthetic. Could not a more recent receipt but did have oil change one more time about 6 months later, again during pandemic. Dealer said that oil looked sludgey and they denied the warranty claim for the car. They billed Hyundai 18,000 to put a new engine in my vehicle and Hyundai denied the claim. Dealer said he would put a used engine in the vehicle for $7,920 with a 1 yr warranty. We declined and the dealership said they would now charge us for the tow and $30 a day for use of the loaner. We live 200 miles from the dealership. They asked us to return the vehicle or they could come pick it up, the car is close to the mileage that they cannot sell it as a new car and want to keep mileage down. They told us on Feb 5 that the could not come and get it until Feb 10 and that they would bill us $150 for 5 days it would take them to pick up the car. We see that there have been many engine recalls on Hyundai and we think ours probably have same issues.
