Sonata

  • 126,000 miles
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. While the vehicle was undergoing a regular oil change at jiffy lube in rosberg, Oregon, the mechanic noticed a lot of metal shavings in the oil pan. The mechanic showed the contact the oil pan and gave her the option of having the oil system flushed with fake oil. The contact then took the vehicle to butler Hyundai in medford, Oregon for diagnostic testing. The dealer stated that the oil was clean and there were no traces of metal shavings; therefore, there was no need to repair the vehicle per NHTSA campaign number: 17V226000 (engine). The contact received notification for the recall on 4/14/17. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 126,000.

Engine seizing up driving back from visiting a friend in the next town. I lost engine power on a straight section of the road and with that power steering ability was lost as well. It was on a major highway but was grateful it didn't happen with a lot of vehicles on the road. I coasted to a stop along side the road (near an access road (a relatively dangerous place to park) but at the best place I could find with only a few seconds to make a decision. I did call the local police who came to aid me in maintaining a safe zone for me and my car. My local dealer I bought the car from seem to not be in much of a hurry to get my car fixed. I have called or texted back to the dealer over the last 9 days and have received the same message - we are waiting for Hyundai to authorize repair. I have also called a Hyundai customer care center and they basically said you will just have to wait. How long is too long to go without your vehicle? I need mine to get to work, to get to the store, etc. A car is no longer a luxury, it is a necessity.

The engine hesitates and we took it to the Hyundai dealer for the recall #162 for problems with the engine. They checked the engine with a stethoscope and found no debris according to the technician. But according to the lady in the service department she stated that the problem has been seen in engines with over 100,000 miles and that is why the warranty has been extended to 120,000 miles. This make me very uneasy because it is makes me feel that she is saying that it is still going to happen but not until the engine has over 100,000 miles. So it is not a matter of "if" just a matter of "when" and I do not think that it is fair that I may be at risk of being in an accident as well as my children in the future. I think that it should be remedied even though there is no debris at this time. What can I do to have this rechecked?

Sonata recall on April 14, ,2017 driving at 65 mph on I 75 my engine exploded and I successfully was able to maneuver to the shoulder. I ha be subsequently been sent a recall from Hyundai about this dangerous defect that they have been aware of for over 18 months. However the destruction does not end there. Hyundai motors of North America replaced the blown engine with a new model engine and after I had been driving the vehicle again for 36 hours and under 300 miles...the new engine caught on fire totally destroying my vehicle again due to my dilgence and the cincinnati fire department we were able to extinguish the fire with damage to other people or property. Hyundai has serious quality control issues. The car was on 4 th street in downtown cincinnati when the fire broke out.

Going down the highway at about 75 mph and the engine just shut off. The check engine light and the oil light along with an eps light came on when the engine shut off. No other lights were on before that. Came to a stop and the engine would not crank back up. Had the car towed hour and half back home and was told the engine was seized up. It did not give any kind of warning and has not been able to start at all since. I learned about the recall and towed the car to Hyundai 7/21/17, even though I never got notification of a possible recall for this issue. Apparently they had 5 recalls listed under my vehicle, and I had only gotten a notification for one, which was the shift cable issue. Still waiting for a response from Hyundai

  • 50,000 miles
My Sonata is making noise like the bearings are breaking while I am driving it on city streets and the highway. I called the dealership to try to get an appointment, and they said they would not have an appointment for 2 weeks and that they would not give me a replacement vehicle on the day I dropped my vehicle off. I told them that my car is not safe to drive, and they don't care. I called Hyundai customer service, told them about the noise, and asked them what they can do about it. They told me I have to pay for my own rental car until they the appointment date, which is [ ], even though my car is under recall and making a noise like the bearing is already braking. The company expects me to drive my vehicle around for 2 weeks and hope the engine doesn't fail while I'm going 55 on the highway, or pay for my own rental car even though the issues is their defective engine. Corporate customer service informed me that if I drop off the car, I may have to pay for my own rental car for 3 months before I am able to submit it for reimbursement to Hyundai. My car is unsafe to drive, and the company is not handling the recall properly. Please help me as soon as possible so that I do not die in my defective Sonata while waiting for the company to deal with this properly.

Was driving car down secondary road around 45mph. Car began to slow in speed, would not accelerate & eventually just cut off. Smoke/burning smell came from engine. Tried to jump it to no avail. Had car towed, mechanic had to hand crank engine to get it started. Mechanic (john @ campbell's in prince george, va) informed me that engine seized & needed a new one. There was a current knocking sound once they finally got it running. Learned of engine recall, had car towed to dealership where car was purchased (gateway Hyundai 2200 walthall center dr. Chester va 23836 804-414-2020 service tech: Tommy, service center manager: Mr. Carpenter) they informed me of the recall, told me they would test car. After having to call several times, I was finally told that the car passed the engine test and would not be repaired under the recall. I reiterated what I was told by mechanic, car has less than 100,000 miles with no previous issues & regular maintenance & no reason for engine failure. Service tech and manager agreed. Hyundai had them run the same test 3 times. Mr. Carpenter explained that they have told Hyundai my car falls under the recall and should be repaired and after two weeks of having no car, Hyundai still will not repair my engine. Service manager said they hear the knocking but Hyundai is still dragging it out. Meanwhile I'm a single mother of two kids and work full time with a far commute and am spending extra expenses on transportation. Hyundai knows there is a problem, they should stop trying to get over on innocent paying customers and remedy the situation.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 25 mph, the contact heard a knocking noise in the engine that became louder when the contact accelerated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who found that there was no oil in the engine. Oil was added to the engine and the vehicle was taken to colonial Hyundai (4423 Lincoln hwy, downingtown, pa 19335) where it was diagnosed that there was an unknown failure within the engine. The failure caused the engine to make a tapping noise and lose oil excessively. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to colonial Hyundai where the dealer heard a clicking noise and replaced the PCV valve, but the failure recurred. Colonial Hyundai also stated that a recall would be released and the contact would be provided with a new engine. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 17V226000 (engine). Colonial Hyundai stated that the vehicle passed the recall inspection and did not need a new engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the contact should follow up with the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 114,629.

Sonata

  • 66,687 miles
"engine recall", my car has only 66,687 miles on it, I have done all the maintenance required with the dealership, it is consuming 1 1/2 or more quarts of engine oil per 1000 miles, the dealership had done the consumption test and they told me its not normal, but they said is not related to the recall. I have not have the knocking noise, but isn't the excessive oil consumption one of the symptoms that can get the car to do the damage to the engine. The engine light is not on neither the oil light.

Sonata

  • 91,000 miles
2.5 weeks after 90,000 mile service (June 9, 2017) and 3X recall inspections (including NHTSA campaign 17V152000), while driving down the highway at highway speeds (~ 75 mph on I-355), I experienced gradual loss of power. I noticed some light white smoke from the back of the car and my engine and oil lights came on. I immediately pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the engine. Looking under the car, I saw 2 large streams of oil coming from the front (passenger side, traverse mounted) engine (2.0 turbo). Attached photos are taken shortly after of the oil slick under the car. I called the dealer and they dispatched a tow truck and took the car to the dealer (June 27th, approx 3:45 pm cst, arrived at dealer 6:30 pm). I just called the dealer service department and was told the engine was found to "have a hole in the bottom of the engine" that was not related to the other recall notices. He stated their was a brand new recall that just came out after my service detailing how to inspect the engine for this new defect. He stated they used a microphone to check the engine sounds to detect it. He also stated several other cars have experienced this failure. Currently waiting on reply from manufacture to dealership for disposition of repairs (probably new engine). Dealership is "family Hyundai" of tinley park, il.
