The NHTSA has numerous complaints from owners of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata and 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with failures associated with the following: abnormal (knocking) noise from engine, reduced motive power and/or hesitation, illumination of the -??Check Engine-?? warning lamp, illumination of engine oil pressure warning lamp, and a burning smell, oil leaking, and smoke. After research, I found the recall 21V301000, which lists -??Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-301-??, and I have attached it. I believe the piston oil rings are potentially a source of engine failure for the 2016 Hyundai Sonata and 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (since they are from the same manufacturer) and not the process and defect that Hyundai previously listed (that they stated was corrected), yet referenced in their recall. Hyundai and Kia both have defects with their ignition coils that have the shared part number: 27300-2E601, which also appears as: 27300 2E601. We have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited that is on its 3rd set of ignition coils, and some Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte owners have reported the use of a 4th set of ignition coils. I have researched this part number by contacting multiple Hyundai Certified Parts Departments. A Hyundai Parts Department verified that the Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 16-01-003-1 states that it -??replaces-?? part number 27300-2E601 with part number 27300-2E601QQH, but they are the same exact part down to the 27300-2E601 appearing on both parts. One of the Hyundai parts people that I spoke to said that Hyundai put white circle stickers on the top of the ignition coils to differentiate between the older and newer part numbers, but the parts are identical. He said that Hyundai contacted their supplier of the ignition coils and negotiated a lower price due to a high failure rate. This means a significant price difference per ignition coil for the dealers, but keeps a defective part in the concerned vehicles.

IF I drive long distances for 30 minutes or more and then stop in somewhere and shut the vehicle off. Once I try and start it, it will give the Yellow CIL Check engine light and the HEV error, bring car to dealer. You have to wait approx 15-25 minutes and then it will start up again. I also seem to notice that it happens even faster when I put the transmission speed control into High Performance. The battery seems to overcharge and go well past the halfway mark almost to 80% and then once I power off and back on vehicle, I get the HEV error message and must wait 15-25 minutes before it will start.

Car unexpectedly stopped working and became disabled while trveling 40 - 50 mph on the freeway. Complete loss of power. Danger of a collision on the freeway. All dash lights and warning lights came on. Car would not shift and would not accelerate. It was unsafe to drive and could hardly move off the road. The first year I had the car the engine light came on and loss of power. I took it to the dealership immediately. Whenever I took the car to the dealer they said there were no codes and the car was was fine. The entire time I owned the car I would lose power on inclined roads and engine light would come on and off. Last week November 18 the car stalled and could not drive uphill again risk of a collision from the rear. I took the car to the dealer they said the car was fine. The dealership has never tried to fix the problem and claimed they could not duplicate the problem. Today 12/1/2021 the car stopped operating on the freeway completely and I had to tow it to the dealership. This car has been a safety hazard within the first year and Hyundai has done anything to address the problem.

When I was at work the engine gave up with no warning and could have gotten very dangerous for me. when I called the dealership they said because my car was totaled, but when I called NHTSA they told me that they didn-??t have the remedies. I just thought that was strange. I need my car to work so if I can get a response as fast as possible that would be great.

When headlights switch is in the auto position and you use the right turn signal the headlights go off then come back on. I've had this car for 4 years and noticed this a lot. Left signal is starting to do the same. Very dangerous especially when I do a lot of traveling on interstates. I think this needs to be addressed immediately

The parking mechanism in the transmission failed. The car was parked in my garage. The lever was in the "Park" position when the car drove backwards out of my garage and crashed into the fence. It continued driving into the street and into the neighbors yard. Two people were out walking and saw it happen. I know I did not leave my car in neutral or reverse when I parked it in my garage. When I tested this later sitting in my car, in my garage, the car immediately began moving backwards instantly, while i was still at the wheel. Had the car been in neutral or reverse at the time this incident occurred, I would have known it was moving immediately and shifted it into park right away. When this incident happened I put the car into park, and I got out of my car, I got things from my trunk and went inside the house. Then I went back to the car to get more things. This is when I witnessed it driving out of my garage backwards. I was standing on my back step. Then I ran across the street to my car and got in the drivers seat to attempt driving it back to my garage. I had to yank it out of park and then shove it back into park to get it to start correctly. Then I was able to get it running again and drove it back across the street to my house. thank God no one including myself got hurt. The possibility of this happening shook me up for days. I reported this to Hyundai and waited 3 months for them to make a determination, they said they cant prove it, that it is my word against theirs. I looked online, and saw reports of this happening to other vehicles as late as 2017 even tho the recall for this was 2011-2014. I started using the electronic parking brake because i read online that other people who have had this happen said to do it. I need to buy a new car dont feel safe in this one.

Fuel Pump Control Module replaced before 50,000 mi. - 58,539 mi. got my 2016 Hyundai Sonata Sport for ECM Update. Told dealership I heard ticking/clicking noise coming from engine; said oil was low and suggested oil change & low key battery was causing issues. Oil consumption was more and more 1qt every 2,000 mi, then 1qt every 1,000 mi. 1/29/21 at 90,340 mi, on the turnpike (70 MPH), car check engine light came on, car started vibrating VERY bad, pulled over & LIMP mode had activated. Hyundai dealership was 5 miles away, - found cylinder 2 had a misfire(s) - one of 2 exhaust valves burned a hole through; valve seat - damaged. Cylinder head and exhaust valves, spark plugs were replaced, & oil change. Engine light came on a couple days later car did not go to LIMP MODE. 2/12/21 at 93,466 mi, took the car to Hyundai for service again, Exhaust CAM Phaser failing, Replaced CVVT & Timing Chain Tensioner & RTV silicone. 4/21/21-103,821 mi. went for an oil change & oil consumption test, went back after less than 1,000 mi, Hyundai dealership stated that the car was.73 qts low and normal, I checked before the service, oil was closer to the "E" than "F". Dealership unreliable; did not complete test. Adding oil about 2 qts every 1,000 mi. Car was also idling weird NO warning lights. 7/22/21, catastrophic break down while driving on the Turnpike (70 MPH), car died, after all lights and gauges shot up. NO warning lights before issue. Lost power steering, coasted at 70 mph to 0 mph (in 30 seconds), barley to side of the road, late night needed a tow. Battery & Alternator fried because of this - replaced next day. Car starts now; wont get past 2,000 RPM & stalls out after 5 mins of running in "P"- NO warning lights, Engine rocks before shut off. NO warning lights on after restarting. Called HYUNDAI Corp. case sent to supervisor, no help getting the car to dealership, no rental, told not to expect a call before 8/3/21. All oil services completed at or before suggested intervals.

Yes I was driving on the expressway I saw smoke coming from my vents. I made it to the nearest neighborhood by my home stopped for it to cool down for 10 minutes I start my car back up & it was perfectly fine by time I made it to a stop sign it caught on fire while I was in the car. The fire department told me it was due to an electric/engine problem & nothing was my fault. I don't have insurance to cover it. The next morning I found out on the internet that all Hyundai's and Kia have a re call on cars due to engine fire risk. I was really devastated when I found out that my car has been on re call not once or twice but three times. By law, iam authorize to get a car or a check of how much the car is worth. I talked to Hyundai motor America headquarters Mrs. Gretchen told me that they notify me at the address that the car was registered in & not my current address and also she stated it's my fault. Which I don't understand how when nobody called text or email me personally just to see if I made it to my re call appointment in January. Not only I had another one in March I didn't know about as well then they have another re call I just found out about in June Hyundai better and has to do something now I could of lost my life & I lost everything I had my phone fedex equipment important paperwork etc. Fyi insurance has nothing to do with a re call car. By law I suppose to get something for that

I had to replace the battery within a month of getting the car, then again 6 months later. The radio and back up camera went out after a year of having it. The headlights kept going out, and eventually the wiring started burning. Battery went out again along with the alternator now. Mid drive the lights would cut off, speed thermometer would be off by 15, and almost impossible to turn the wheel.

Since I impacted my head strongly against the door frame of the vehicle causing my brain injury. I don't know if this vehicle is part of the problem with the takata system. What I am sure is that in the history of this vehicle there are reviewed 3 accidents in which it may be witnessing that the airbag system has never worked in addition to negligence on the part of the owner (driver) since these 2 accidents have been in the hands of him and himself has not sent to inspect the airbag device. In June of 2020 I got an emergency warning on my vehicle's dash that there was a problem with the hybrid system and should stop my car immediately and take it to the dealership. The vehicle slowed to 20 M.P.H. then came to a stop, I took the car to the dealer where it was kept for 10 days, I was told they could not duplicate the problem and I picked up the vehicle. Half a block from the dealer it happened again, I returned the vehicle to the dealer they said it was a spark plug which was replaced. I expressed my concern with the car coming to a stop in the middle of traffic. On March 3, 2021, the same thing happened, a warning on my dash, the vehicle slowed and came to a complete stop. I again took it to the dealer and was told that the electronic system was having issues with the water pump and new pump would be ordered. I again expressed concern as now I do not feel the vehicle is safe to drive. I live in southern California and take the freeways on a regular basis. Having the car come to a stop in the middle of a busy freeway is extremely dangerous to me and other drivers.
