About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
My automatic rear hatch stopped working after a small amount of water from a cooler leaked in my "trunk". I checked the fuse for the hatch and it blew, I swapped it out and smoke began to pour from the rear of my Jeep (the trunk) then a fire erupted, severely damaging my Cherokee. The Jeep was in my driveway and due to the fire being near the gas tank I had to drive it to the street out of fear it would hurt my family. There is a recall re: The hatch motor module getting wet and causing a fire which I had performed in 2016. This part is faulty and almost harmed me/family and now I am out my deductible and car rental costs. No one from Chrysler or Jeep will call me back.

Shortly after buying my 2015 Jeep Cherokee sport with the 2.4 engine and 9 speed automatic, it began shifting erratically. In town it would hesitate when leaving a stop light or jerk violently while changing gears. On the highway, it would not downshift on inclines or to pass and merge with traffic. I had several close calls where I had to accelerate but nothing happened when putting the pedal to the floor. This has been in the shop four times just for this problem alone and as of this writing, is still not any better. It has also had other problems with the thermostat and interior. I work in the automotive industry and know from resources that this is a simple fix. Fca is giving thousands of people the runaround and angering dealerships by not being honest. The 4 cylinder engine will no longer meet the reported mpg it was claimed to after the shift profiles change and this puts fca in a position that Volkswagen recently dealt with. My safety and the safety of thousands is not worth 3 mpg. Fca is also treating customers as if each case is individually unique and it belittles them as well as the mechanics that know repairs are futile. I have a case number now and another appointment but it would be best to avoid this vehicle at all costs and arbitrate. There should be a federal investigation before someone dies if they haven't already. The thermostat failure is also widespread and is only being addresses one at a time in field claims. This too could lead to serious damage and even fire which has also happened to a few of these vehicles. Please help us be a voice and stop this serious disregard for safety and consumer rights.

Most recent incident: 5/25/16, en route home from work, northern state parkway. Vehicle accelerated, while moving with traffic with three car lengths between myself and car in front of me from 35mph to 60mph. I almost rear-ended the vehicle in front of me. Approximately 20 minutes later, the vehicle decelerated from 40mph to an almost stop without my hitting the brakes and I was almost hit from behind. I came to a full stop upon exiting the parkway, when I attempted to accelerate to move forward and merge into traffic on South oyster bay road, my vehicle did not move more than rolling ahead. I 'floored it' in an attempt to move into traffic, as there was now a car approaching quickly, and my vehicle did not accelerate as it should have; it continued to roll along. My vehicle is currently at the westbury Jeep Chrysler Dodge service center 111 bond St. Westbury, NY 11590 1(516)333-2666 my most recent Chrysler case #: 29373159 case manager: Crystal; 1(800)763-8422 ext. 40505 I have had ongoing issues with my vehicle since signing a lease in December 2014. The seats incessantly squeak, with no remedy. The car has been pulling, jerking, accelerating, and decelerating on its own. This problem has escalated to an unsafe status and I am unable to safely drive my vehicle. Chrysler corporation has deemed there is nothing wrong with my vehicle, yet it continues to accelerate and decelerate without my initiation of such actions. The vehicle has an unsafe delay in acceleration when I do attempt to merge onto a highway, for example. This vehicle is not functioning at a safe standard and the company is claiming nothing wrong and safe to drive. I have had far too many near-wrecks because of delayed acceleration, and the vehicle accelerating and decelerating on its own. Please help me.

Bought my 2015 Jeep Cherokee in November 2014. Began having a very loud, annoying rattle coming from back seat and transmission issues in February of 2015. The transmission surges when you start the car, it clunks after you turn the car off, sometimes the car won't go when you give it gas and then it will kick in and be like a turbo boost pushing the car forward. It's a huge safety concern. You have to be careful when making turns when there is oncoming traffic because you may push the gas but the car may not go like it should or could jump forward and cause you to reared someone when taking off from a red light. It's been in the shop 5times for the backseat and 3 times for the transmission ( just put it back in the shop yesterday). They have reprogrammed the transmission twice and I don't know what they do to the seat - they put some tape on the metal or something like that but it of course didn't fix it. This is a horrible vehicle and I traded out of a vehicle with negatively equity and after all the issues tried to trade out of it but the car has lost nearly $10,000 in value in less than a year leaving me stuck with this unsafe vehicle. I am scared to drive this vehicle on the highway where you must travel at high rates of speed. In August of 2015. I was stopped at a red light, light turned green, all the cards began moving forward. I pushed the gas which with the transmission issue the car kicks toward pretty hard when you take off and the car in front of me stopped abruptly and I tapped the back of the person's car. It was very insignificant and I was not even ticketed but of course the other driver is now making a personal injury claim and I truly believe if the transmission in this car did not surge forward when you first push the gas I probably would not have even tapped this vehicle!
