The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the interior door handles fractured on all four doors. The doors could only open from outside of the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The dealer stated that the interior door handles and panels needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 60,000.

The inside door handles in the front seat, both have become hard and brittle and have crumbled. If the driver's handle deteriorates any more the door handle will no longer work and you could be trapped in the car in the event of an accident. I've researched this on the internet and found that this is a common problem. The passenger side has a huge chunk of plastic that has broken off and this inside door handle is rarely used.

Grand Cherokee

Driver side interior door handle has completely broken off. The other 3 door handles have also started to crack and become loose. It starts with a crack in the plastic, the crack then turns into a hole above the metal handle. The actual metal handle itself then loosens up and completely comes off. This is a serious problem that many other 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have had. It's not from excessive use, it's a manufacturer defect. I cannot get out of my car unless someone open the door from the outside. I would assume this is a serious safety hazard considering it traps the operator inside the vehicle.

  • 85,000 miles
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 2005 and up has inside door panels made of plastic, and the door handles which allow opening the vehicle doors for the inside are attached to this weak plastic panel. Over time the door handle plastic attachment points began to crack and break away, eventually causing the opening handle to fall off, and the door is then not able to be opened from inside. In the event of a crash or fire in the vehicle while this condition exists, the occupants at those doors would be unable to escape the vehicle thru the doors with this problem. Chrysler service states that there are not enough complaints regarding this for them to assist me in any way, to repair this all the inside door panels must be replaced. Both rear door handles on my Grand Cherokee are broken. First the left side broke in March 2012, then the right side broke a few months afterwards. All rear seated passengers inside the vehicle are unable to open the doors. The front seated passengers have to exit the vehicle and open it from the outside. This is a safety issue. The door handle issue is very common with this vehicle make and model.

First, the interior door handles are a hazard. All four are cracked and one broke off as my grand child open the back seat door to get out. The front passenger door interior door handle is breaking off at any time, the others are cracked. I am afraid that in an accident some of us might not make it out. They are too expensive to replace. I tried to trade in the Jeep but no luck! I know there are more Jeep out there with the same problem. I hope there have been no accidents with deaths, yet ! help !!! the second, is the catalyst converter needs to be replaced again after a year, how many times has it been replaced before? I cant get that info.

Grand Cherokee 4WD 8-cyl

  • 55,000 miles
My 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a defect that includes all of the interior door handles braking from regular use. This problem is a major safety concern as anyone inside the vehicle cannot exit the vehicle in case of an emergency. Further more, children and or adults may accidentally cut themselves on the sharp broken plastic edges of the broken handle. In order to replace the handles I had to order a new door panel, yet after only 6 months the handle was broken again. This is not an issue related to my Jeep only, with a little research its easy to find thousands of other people with the very same problem I am experiencing with any Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2005-2010.

After christmas after taking my stepson's cousin home, I noticed that the door handles on the back doors were hanging, with the surrounding plastic busted. I thought it happened when the doors were opened, and that they were opened too hard. Took to a dealer (Chevy dealer, that I bought vehicle from) and was told that it would be better to replace entire door panels, instead of just the door handles.

All four interior door handles are broken to varying degrees. This has been happening over several years. The door handle that is most intact is the driver's handle. Ironically this car is typically only used by one person who uses that door handle. The car has approximately 75,000 miles. It has become a serious concern for our family. My husband will not take passengers for fear that if there would be an emergency or accident his passengers would be unable to exit the car. I have had multiple cars over the years and have never had one door handle break much less all four. Jeep has made me believe that this is an unusual occurrence when I contacted them. Online searches make me believe otherwise.

Door handle on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo seems to be ready to break on driver door. I can see a sort of pin cracking through the door itself. This is a safety issue that needs to be fixed immediately. Notified Jeep dealer in concord, nc and I was told that I would have to buy a new door panel assembly to fix this as it is not under warranty.

The plastic interior door panels are breaking at the door handles. When the cracks proceed far enough the interior door handles break off trapping occupants inside. All four doors are broken, the driver's door least of all. It is not a wear and tear issue but a real safety concern.
