I haven't been in a wreck yet; but this is more of preventative measure. I have looked at multiple sites and seen where there have been thousands of complaints on interior door handles breaking off. I notified Chrysler and they told me that was the 1st they have heard of it, and was willing to do anything about it. All four of my handles have broken off and I have rigged up the driver door, but as far as passengers they wouldn't be able to get out if their was an emergency. I would think Jeep would step up and issue a recall on this poorly made product.

I have a 2005 Grand Cherokee with a door handle. My driver door handle is just about to drop off.. I noticed the "loose" handles but my rear drivers side door doesn't have a handle for the same reason. Jeep definitely needs to recall these issues before something happens. Massive list of complains in the NHTSA website and Jeep/Chrysler has not issued a recall...huge safety concern for all of us that have kids in the back seat and other passengers and god forbid there's an accident opens like you mentioned a fire or an accident and your passengers can't exit the vehicle.

Interior door handles are inoperable. Cannot open door from the inside of the vehicle. Handles crack and break easily. This causes operator and passengers unable to exit vehicle in a timely fashion. Doors must be opened from the outside.

I just bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 5.7L hemi and after purchasing the vehicle, I noticed that the rear passenger side interior door handle had snapped off so that you are unable to open the door from the inside. The front passenger side door handle is cracked, but not completely broken off yet. There is some spider cracking on the rear drivers side handle as well. After doing a little research, I realized that it's not a part that can just be replaced, it must be replaced by Jeep and can cost upwards of $3,000. I see this as a very urgent safety issue because if I get in a car wreak or there is a fire, my passengers and I would have trouble exiting the vehicle. This is a problem that needs to be addressed by Jeep and soon before this takes a tragic turn.

All four of my door handles are cracked. I can no longer open my rear doors from the inside because the handle is completely busted. My two front handles are almost the same. If I have passengers riding in the back seat I have to open their door from the outside. I fear that if I'm ever in an accident no one will be able to exit the vehicle unless an outside person in present. This is a very serious and dangerous situation, and I feel that Jeep has a responsibility to its consumers to fix such a safety issue.

  • 90,000 miles
My door handles on 4 of my doors (not one or two but four) on the inside have cracked, some cracked where one is unable to open the door from the inside which now makes this a safety issue. This is problem because the plastic in the doors are so brittle that any force can cause the handle to break. I have approached Jeep about the issue and they do not even listen to my complaint and said I just had to buy a new replacement door panel. A door panel to replace a faulty door handle is quite unacceptable and not a logical excuse for their bad and very cheap product. You pay good money to stay with an american vehicle but with excuses like this make me want to buy foreign.something needs to be done as I have researched the issue to find many people in my same situation...

All four door handles are coming apart and one is completely broke. If there is an emergency, noone will be able to get out if the windows have been damaged. There are hundreds of Cherokee and commander owners facing this same situation. This is a severe and life-threatening safety issue and Chrysler Jeep refuses to take responsibility for using cheap material that literally disintegrates on its own. Their price for fixing this defect is $700-$900 per door and they absolutely refuse to cover any portion of it. If a company freely decides to use inferior materials just to make more profit, this creates safety issues, especially children and infants, then they must be held accountable and responsible for its repairs at no cost to the owner.

2 of my rear doors on my 2005 Grand Cherokee broke off, so far total of 3 of my inside door handles are broken, this is definitely a safety issue if I were to get into a car accident and nobody can get out because door handles are broken... this should be a safety recall from Jeep on 2005 Grand Cherokee's

problem #170

Aug 152013

Grand Cherokee

  • 46,000 miles
Driver's side rear inside door handle broke, making it impossible to open door from the inside (major safety issue). Upon inspection, I found that the plastic surrounding the handles on both passenger-side doors are also cracked in the same spot, they will soon fail. Called dealership (farrish, in fairfax va), they said Jeep wouldn't do anything for me as out of warranty, and entire door panels would need to be replaced at $780 each (note: Not the dealership's fault). Given the number of complaints on this and other websites, it is clear Jeep is aware of this issue and has decided to to address it, despite the obvious safety implications. Furthermore, they have refused to offer the handle as a separate part - replacing a door panel with another one with a similarly defective part is not economically feasible, and doesn't seem like a real solution as the new part is just as likely to fail as the old one. A recall should be implemented. The problem is so widespread that there is now an aftermarket solution (door handle replacement kits) designed specifically to address this problem, but you can't get them installed by the dealership.

All 4 interior door handles on the vehicle have broken off. Which doesn't allow egress of the vehicle unless a window is lowered and door is opened from the outside. In the event of a vehicle crash, fire, flood, power failure, etc... the occupants would not be able to exit the vehicle.

All four doors, the door unlock/open handles are made of plastic and are disintegrating and falling apart. This makes it impossible to open the door from the inside of vehicle. Handle is made from cheap brittle plastic and all are falling apart, even those on doors that are not used frequently. Jeep has said the entire door panel has to be replaced at a cost of over $800 per door panel X 4 doors = $3200!!! this is an important safety issue since the lever mechanism is plastic made into the door panel. Jeep needs to have a factor recall to replace these defective door unlock/open handles.

Grand Cherokee

  • 120,000 miles
Interior door handles break all 4 door handles had cracks in the plastic backing when I got the vehicle in 2012. First, the rear driver door handle broke and the mechanic wanted $850 to fix it since the plastic backsplash is part of the whole door panel. Without the plastic backsplash, the handle does not work. So, I have to open that door from the outside for my kids. Now the front passenger door handle has a hole and is almost to the point of breaking. I want to get rid of this car as I cannot afford $3300 to fix the handles. This is a safety hazard as doors must open from the inside.

The door handles of the interior doors are all breaking apart. This could be a safety issue in case of an accident and the people inside of the vehicle not being able to escape. The material is very thin plastic that is very cheap and the reason not one but all of the interior door handles are broken and/or cracked about to break.

Rear passenger side door handle is broken. No idea how or when it happened. On June 4, 2013, my son tried to open the door from the inside and it wouldn't open. I figured he just had a hard time and I let him out from the outside. 3 days later, I opened the door from the outside to let my son in and immediately noticed that some of the plastic molding around the interior door handle was broken off and missing and the door handle was hanging limp. I am certain that there was no missing plastic 3 days prior when the door wouldn't open from the inside, but I don't know how or when the plastic broke off. I'm guessing it's down inside the door panel. Frustrating since those rear door handles are rarely used. I almost always open the rear doors from the outside because my kids are small and still ride strapped into car seats, so they're not able to get out themselves. Having read other complaints, this must be some sort of defect. There's no reason a door handle that is rarely used should have broken off, and it's especially strange that it seems to have just broken apart when no one was touching it.

2005 Jeep has been slipping into neutral since February 2013. It caused me to have an accident because I couldn't get out of the way of rear-oncoming traffic. No major damage was done thankfully! a few weeks later I experienced a rollaway. I went into the sitter to pick up my son. After about 5 minutes of being inside I my Jeep roll across the street! I go running outside, opened the door and pulled up the emergency break...just missing an embankment! since the "neutral" thing started I have had several service lights come on. My mechanic performed a diagnostic check and he said its all electrical. Also, I've had issues with the front passenger window going up/down slower than the rest of the windows since 3 months into purchase. Other issues are cracked door handles (both front doors), replacing taillight kit, ac switch-a few times as it would only work on high.
