  • 64,000 miles
Front passenger door handle suddenly cracked/busted upon getting out of the car. Later, the other three door handles cracked/busted. Recently, I found it difficult to get out of the car because the door would not open due to the busted handle.

The cups around the door handles on the interior panel of the door began cracking and over time eventually failed and crumbled completely rendering the door handle useless. Obviously this a huge safety hazard as occupants can not exit the vehicle should there be an emergency. Through research this seems to be a far too common occurrence for this model vehicle.

We have purchased a used 2005 Jeep with 2 broken door handles. Searching the internet shows that this is a common problem with these Jeep. This is truly a safety hazard seeing as no one could escape this vehicle should there be an accident. Since this is a problem many seem to have, I feel Jeep needs to step up and repair this very serious issue!

When I went to get out of my Jeep this morning I opened the door as I normally do. I then heard a crack and noticed the driver's side door handle pulled completely out of the door. The brittle cheap plastic piece that holds the handle in the door just designated. The unfortunate part is that I cannot open my door now therefore if I am in an accident and the car is on fire I will not be able to exit the care which is very scary for me. I hope Chrysler recalls this issue. You would think a $50000 car would last.

The interior door handles are broken. The driver side door is barely hanging on, it's getting more and more difficult to open the door to get out. The front passenger side door handle is starting to crack, I have put a little epoxy on the handle to try and make it last longer. The cost to replace the handles are ridiculous! these doors are a death trap!!!!!

The interior door handles on the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee wk has all broken. Most of the handles in my vehicle are still in working order, but one in particular is broken and someone sitting on that side cannot get out of the vehicle from the inside. If there is an accident they could be stuck inside the vehicle. These handles are poorly designed, and the others will likely break entirely if not used gingerly.

Approximately 3 years ago, the interior door handle attached to the door panel became brittle and cracked and over time the 2 rear doors do not have handles, just gaping holes, and the front door handles are cracked with large holes. The obvious defect of the construction material has created a situation where the rear passengers cannot exit in an emergency. The cracking of the door panel is not normal wear and tear, but a defect in construction.

3 out of 4 of the interior door handles molding are broken and because of that, you can not open the doors from the inside using the doors handles.you have to let down the windows to open both of the back and front passenger doors in order to get out of the car. The driver side is beginning to have the same trouble with opening. The dealer price for replacement cost is about $200+ not including labor. I checked the internet for a solution only to discover that is a major problem with this year's model and many complaints have been filed with Chrysler. All said that Chrysler refused to help with the problem which is very costly for the average working person. To me it is a serious safety hazard when driving the car. What if the car catches fire, or rollover in a accident or goes in a body of water? I am hesitate to drive the vehicle because of that. All car owners expect to make repairs to their vehicle from daily use. However, it should not be the owner responsibility to pay for a repair when it is a know fact that many owners are having the same problem on the same model and year of the vehicle. Chrysler should be made to have recall to correct the problem.

3 of my interior door handles are completely broken off. I was told by the dealership that my extended warranty did not cover the interior door handles. The total cost to repair the 3 handles is $2,100. I cannot afford to fix these handles. I researched online to see if others had the same issue. As a matter of fact, on this site alone, there are numerous accounts of people all over the country that are having the same issues with their Jeep Grand Cherokee's. why isn't there a recall to fix this issue" do you know what the end result could be if someone is trapped in their vehicle after a serious accident, because the door handles are inoperable" I can see if maybe a few people we're complaining, but it's not. This is faulty equipment by the manufacture and Chrysler should own up to their mistake. If safety is of your concern, you should put this at the top of your list. Thank you for your time.

All of the inside door handles are breaking off around the pull lever. It started with one of the back doors and now has spread to both back doors and the front passenger door. The plastic around the drivers door has begun to crack and will not be long before it fails as well. The door handle assembly is molded into the entire panel and the repair requires replacement of the entire door panel. Getting out of this car requires some skill. You have to pull straight out on the wire (that used to be connected to the pull lever) if the wire drops into the panel you can only exit the Jeep by someone opening it from the outside. This is a problem. I did a search on the net and I found countless post of the exact same failure. Jeep is saying the same thing to anyone who contacts them. That it is abuse that has caused the issue and replacement is not covered under warranty and the cost is $700 per door.

All 4 of my interior door mechanisms are broken. I'm able to still open my front passenger and driver doors, but the rear driver and passenger doors have to be opened from the outside of the vehicle. I have filed 2 claims with my insurance company to attempt to get them replaced (safety hazard), but was declined. I've also contacted the Chrysler corporation and was told that since my vehicle was out of warranty that they couldn't do anything about it. I would think that since there have been so many complaints on the door mechanisms being so fragile, that they would recall them and replace them. The rear doors where the first ones to break, then the front passenger and as of 4/02/13 the front driver side broke. I've always had a Jeep of some kind and this has never happened to me and if the corporation doesn't step up and correct this matter, I will have no choice but to never purchase a Jeep product again.

I purchased a used 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. A few days after I bought it I was cleaning the inside and opened the back passenger door. Upon doing so I noticed the handle is broken. It is still operable but I don't know how long it will last. I looked online and see that apparently everyone that has this model has the same problem, some people with all 4 handles useless and unable to open any door from the inside. I have a 3 yr old son that sits in the seat where the handle is breaking. If there was an accident or emergency I want the door to be able to open. If the handle breaks, because of a manufacturer defect, and he cuts his hand on the jagged plastic I think that could cause a lawsuit. If I have an adult in the back seat and there is an emergency the person may not be able to exit. This is not safe or acceptable.

The left rear door handle has broken off. I open the door to place an item in the back seat and noticed the door handle laying inside the door. The handle itself is in tack but the plastic surrounding where the handle attaches with the door was broken. There was not trauma, heavy or extensive use placed on the door (inside or out). When researching possible solutions to my problem, I became overwhelmed by how many other owners were dealing with the same problem. I called a couple of dealers and was floored by the cost to fix the situation and attempting to used a door from the junk yard is not a solution due to the problem appearing to be universal to this vehicle. My concern is that I now have a vehicle where one door can only be opened from the outside creating a safety issue. On an upside, I am thankful after reading other peoples situations that I only have one door affected, but now I am on edge and cautious that my other doors will soon follow suit.

I opened the door to get out and the interior driver's side handle broke off of the door panel. I went to the dealer and the handle is part of the door panel. The handle's hinge is set in plastic which happens to be in the same one piece door panel. The door panel has to be replaced ($795 for the part and $259 for the installation). On line I noticed that there were many complaints with this problem. It is possible to get locked in the car.
