All four (4) of the door handles on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee are cracking and I am fearful that they will be breaking off soon. The handles and the supporting door handle housing are all cracking in the same location. I contacted Chrysler (case #[xxx]) and Jeep (case #[xxx]) and have been unable to receive any repair assistance even though this is a manufacturer defect. Since the defect is in the housing unit of the interior door panel, the cost to replace the housing is prohibitive to most owners since the entire door panel must be replaced. The dealer states it is ~$800 per door to fix. Due to the safety issue of being unable to exit the back seat area from the inside without difficulty, I am fearful of allowing my 14yr daughter, grandkids, or anyone else of riding in the back seat. If an accident were to occur, they would be unable to safely exit the car from the inside. The damage to the door handles and/or frames are not due to normal "wear and tear" or any outside circumstance. Although I am just now reporting this, I did not initially recognize it as a defect when the problem first occurred with the first door (rear driver's side) in 2009. This is a safety hazard caused by defective manufacturing. I am reporting this hoping that a recall will be made by Chrysler before someone is seriously injured and/or killed. This is a safety hazard because god forbid an accident occurs there's no way to open the door from the inside. The only way to open the doors is to physically roll down the window and open the door from the outside.

I am wondering how there hasn't been a recall on the Grand Cherokee interior door handles. My car has only 67000 miles and all four door handles are cracked. The back two are being replaced because they no longer work. This poses a serious problem in the event of a crash since rear occupants would be trapped in the vehicle. Performing a search online and this is definitely a widespread issue for the Grand Cherokee.

No sign of any wear or obvious damage from visual inspection. Dealership quotes repair cost to be prohibitively expensive. Seems to be manufacturer defect. Obvious concern that this could be a safety hazard in case rapid egress from vehicle is required in an emergency situation.

All 4 interior door handles are cracking and breaking at the base of the handle. I can barely get out of my Jeep opening from the inside, and I have to get out to let my son out at school. My children must wait for me to open their doors, and if I were to get into a collision and my car on fire, I would in no way have time to roll my window down, get out, then let my kids out before an explosion of gasoline and other fluids engulfed my vehicle. This is not normal wear and tear, or the driver handle would be the worst, for it is most used. The driver handle was the last to break, and I'm not happy for the money I'm soon to spend, especially when I search online and find so many others having the very same complaint.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee limited, 2005. The rear right door handle cracked and upon exiting of my family member, the hand simply broke off. In the past week, I have been experiencing a threatening to break of the driver's side door handle. I am the only one driving my Jeep and I worry that when I have my grandchild in the vehicle and the rest break as it appears they are threatening, exiting the vehicle will be an issue. I have contacted both the dealership in my town as well as Chrysler regarding this issue and I was informed that I would have to replace the door panels rather than the actual door handles. The dealerships are kicking the can down the road and this is dangerous for them as well as the customers. Chrysler needs to deal with this issue before it becomes a real problem. After the recall was performed, the consumer noticed the ignition cylinder physically extended out from the housing and was very difficult and awkward to engage when starting the vehicle. In addition to that, when starting the vehicle, the windshield wipers came on. The consumer stated it was not an issue prior to the recall work being done. The dealer repeatedly told the consumer the ignition switch had nothing to do with the wipers. Updated 06/02/16.
