My truck makes a horrible sound when trying to start it. It is at the point now where it is not driveable. I was quoted a price of 1280.00. There are also 1500 + addtional cars with the same problem. Why is this not considered for recall? I do not think it fare that I have to spend 1280 for a truck that will not be three years old until Jan 3rd. Someone please help. Thank you.

This time I am told that there is a part that is needed for the fix but that the part comes from a "2nd or 3rd party" manufacturer and that the part is on back order.....No real idea as to when this part may be available....This is ridiculous!! This car isn't even two years old and it has been the worst purchase ever, let alone the first NEW car purchase that I have made...I am going on 3-4 weeks w/ NO answers and I am extremely angry!!!

I will say that the dealership that I bought the vehicle from and that has performed all service/ oil changes has been as accommodating as possible given this BS situation! after the first week of rental car, they kindly supplied me with a dealer car....(Very Grateful) but what about those that I have researched online that do not have a dealer w/ this level of support???

If not for the dealership (at this point) doing the best that they can to assist, I would come un- glued!

With this being said, I still hold the dealership responsible as they are my only direct contact to the manufacturer as a sole individual.....If I get food poisoning at a restaurant and the food that they had received from the farm was tainted...I am still holding the restaurant responsible as they are the entity that has bonded the "Credible relationship" to re-sell the product that made me sick....I am PISSED and I feel like there is nothing that I can do...

My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 L

Since last Friday, anytime we attempt to start the car with the keyless push button on the dash, the car cranks and cranks but generally won't start. I can generally get it to start with remote start on the key. Once it is started it sometimes will die when applying the brake to enable regular (non-remote status). I haven't taken it to a Dealer yet, just getting ducks in a row to show them others have the same problem.

64k miles so out of warranty, but purchased an extended 3rd party warranty, so we will see.

I see many others have this problem and may are pointing to the TIPM which apparently is on back-order at Chrysler with October delivery date. Are others getting this repaired as a recall or extended warranty?

This seems to be a wide spread problem based on Forum searches.

My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8.

When engine cold (not run for over 4-5 hours) the car cranks and cranks but won't start. I can only get it to start with remote start on the key. Once it is started it will start every time until it is off for extended period (4-5hrs). Then the same thing, will just crank and crank and wont start.

39k miles so out of warranty.

I see many others have this problem and may are pointing to the TIPM which apparently is on back-order at Chrysler with no expected date in site.

This seems to be a problem not isolated to my vehicle as a quick Google search will turn up lots of similar complaints.

Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7L Hemi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 31,000 miles

I will simply copy a long excerpt from a letter I sent to Chrysler today which more or less describes the complete history of this problem.

----------------------------------

Beginning the evening of July 30, I experienced issues with starting my Grand Cherokee. These issues were sporadic, however once every three or four times I attempted to start the engine, the engine would crank but fail to start. On July 31, I scheduled an appointment with my local jeep dealership (Videon Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Newtown Square, PA) for August 5. By August 2, the Jeep was not drivable as starting it would take 20-30 minutes each time. I was forced to rent a car at my own expense for the weekend of August 3-4. On August 5 the dealership diagnosed the issue as pertaining to TSB 08-053-11 and reprogrammed the Totally Integrated Power Module. On August 7, I experienced the no start issue again and scheduled a second appointment with the dealership for August 8. On August 8, the TIPM was identified as needing to be replaced. I was informed by the dealership that the necessary part was on backorder with an estimated arrival time of within “a few weeks”. The dealership advised that it was ok for me to continue driving the vehicle in the meantime despite the issue.

On August 9 I opened a case with the Chrysler Customer Assistance Center by completing the on-line contact form. On the morning of August 12 I received a reply stating that my case had been escalated to the parts expediting team and that I would receive a call within one business day. By August 14 I had yet to receive any further contact regarding the case. I replied to the previous message requesting the promised follow-up call. On August 15 I received a reply stating that “the cost of accuracy is time”.

Later that day I received an email from a Customer Assistance Center representative named Rebekah, stating that she will be my “customer advocate” on the Chrysler Parts Team. The email stated, in part, “we currently do not have a firm estimated time of arrival for your part to reach the dealership.” I replied to this email expressing my dissatisfaction with Chrysler’s inability to remedy the issue and demanded that Chrysler provide me with “a concrete plan they will be putting into action today to have this issue remedied immediately.” This email was ignored by the customer advocate.

On the evening of August 16, while driving the vehicle at a speed of approximately 40 miles per hour, the engine stalled, causing the vehicle to lose all power near the intersection of Croton Road and King of Prussia Road in Upper Merion Township, PA. Given the nature of the road as well as the traffic around me, this situation posed a serious safety hazard to myself, my passenger, and others near my vehicle, and since that point I no longer feel safe operating the vehicle in its current condition. As such, I have been entirely unable to operate this vehicle since August 16.

On the evening of August 16, as a result of the vehicle stalling and the serious safety concerns this event presented, I contacted Chrysler Customer Care at the number listed on Jeep’s website. I spoke to an agent named Dani who informed me that Chrysler could arrange for a rental vehicle for me until my own vehicle was repaired. I was informed that the rental department would not be open again until August 19, but was advised that I could rent a vehicle from a nearby Enterprise branch for the weekend and submit the charges to Chrysler for reimbursement. Dani stated that the Chrysler rentals department would contact me on the morning of August 19. On August 17, I rented a Jeep Compass from the Enterprise branch I was referred to by Dani. On the morning of August 19 I received no contact from Chrysler despite Chrysler’s promise that I would be contacted. I called the general Chrysler Customer Care number again and was transferred to Rebekah, my customer care advocate, who did not answer her phone. I left a voicemail with Rebekah and received a call back from her a few hours later. Rebekah stated that Chrysler would reimburse me for rental fees of up to $35 per day. She also stated that the TIPM my vehicle required was scheduled to be shipped on August 23, which would mean a delivery date to the dealerships on or around August 31.

On August 27, I attempted to contact Rebekah, my customer care advocate, to ask for a status update. As is typical, she did not answer her phone, so I left a voicemail message requesting that she call back with a status update on the parts. My call was never returned. On the evening of August 27, I contacted the parts department at my dealership (Videon) to request any status updates from them. An employee from the parts department contacted Chrysler as a result of my call and then called me back, stating that the supplier commitment date for the part was now August 30, which would mean delivery to the dealerships during the first or second week of September. The employee did caution that it was not uncommon for these dates to be pushed back.

Discussions on popular web sites such as Jeep Forum (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f309/), Jeep Garage (http://www.jeepgarage.org/f107/), and Edmunds (http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0f8b2b/1066) indicate that this is an issue many owners of 2011 and later Jeep Grand Cherokees are experiencing and not just an isolated incident. In fact, some discussions have indicated that possibly 800 or more Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles are currently afflicted by this issue. According to these discussions, Chrysler is advising some owners not to expect to have their vehicle repaired until the end of September or beginning of October, while telling others that there is still no firm ship date whatsoever.

From what I am hearing now the earliest I can expect to have this issue resolved is end of September/beginning of October.

I will never buy another jeep or any other vehicle dealing with this company. To have a problem like this exist and no one do anything about it is ridiculous. To be in your vehicle and it stop in the middle of you driving it, first off its dangerous and it could get someone killed. To find out that they knew this was going on and refused to recall the part lets me know that Chrysler as a Company could careless about their consumers. This will cost 1200.00 plus labor. Do you really think I would ever want to deal with a company like this

ever again. I want and need a lawyer.

Like John in North Carolina (he with the Zurich warranty), my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is deader than Elvis. At first, we thought it was the battery. My father and I went to Sears where we had the battery replaced. However, it started to really act up. When I took it to the dealership for an oil change (I bought it used from a Chevy dealership), it seemed to have behaved. When I got it back, the trouble resumed. The service manager gave me a courtesy check and ruled out the fuel pump.

The next day, it was completely DEAD. My father was able to charge up the battery and we took it to Sears. Sears told me that it was not the battery; rather, it was an electrical problem. They recommended that we take it to a mechanic who specializes in electrical issues. The mechanic took the Jeep apart to trace the wires and discovered that the problem was with the TIPM. He told me that this is the third one that he has seen. The other two were 2011 Dodge Ram pick up trucks. He said that the problem happened when Chrysler went into this TIPM system.

Like the others who have complained, I learned that the part that I need, that all of us need, has a wait list the size of the population of a small city. Even a desperate attempt at ebay did not work as the site does not have any. I called Chrysler and was given the royal runaround.

Here is my suggestion; Along with filing a complaint with the NTHSB, also do a huge Twitter barrage. Here is Chrysler's Twitter handle: @Chrysler and @ChryslerAutos . I would also suggest sending a tweet to @ChrisCuomo @DianeSawyer rand @DavidMuir to see if they can investigate the problem. Here is the hashtag that I used #TIMPFail . Bombard Twitter with it.

I am upset because I am already paying $600 a month to Capitol One for a car that is useless. Chrysler needs to either make good on the TIMP or give us another vehicle.

As previous people have mentioned. My car has been possessed. I first went to dealer about 8 weeks ago they said I need a full tune up and to change the batteries on my key - that worked for about a week. Then the car stared starting only with keyless ignition sometimes, sometime by pressing the ignition, sometime it would take 10 tries to start. The next time they told me my battery in the car needed changing - that worked for about a day or two before the problems started again. I was traveling and when I got back last week the same issues started and I went to the dealer who said I probably needed to change the TIPM module - I didn't let them do that as I wanted to read up on what that did and basically found many complaints about the same issue. The Chrysler manuals however said to first check all the relays, then check the connections and solder to make sure they haven't cracked. This past Saturday the car was totally dead.. zip, nada! towed it to the dealer and told them to please check all the relays, starter and fuel pump, etc... Today they called me and said yup the fuel pump relay is also messed up but its in the TIMP module and they will have to change that for $1500 + taxes.... Oh and by the way its on back order and since there are over 800 on back order we don't know how long it will take to get the piece could be 2 weeks could be 2 months. I have to be without a vehicle for who know show long. Called customer care and of course they don't know anything but to say that parts usually are back order for 7-10 days but will follow up and tell me tomorrow what the status is after they call the dealer (completely closing the circle - I actually thought that was a joke). I'll wait and see what they say tomorrow but not holding my breath. I have had Chrysler cars for over 25 years - not sure I will continue! How is this issue with so many problems not a recall!!! There must be some government agency we can contact.

Been having intermittent starting problems for about 2 months. Now it everyday and takes about 10 attempts to get engine to crank over. In fact, sometimes it actually starts only to die seconds later. Dealer first said it was a battery issue, which cost near $600 but did not do a damn thing. After having the car for an entire day, they claim they have tracked to a part between starter and engine (had some acronym for it but cannot remember) which, once the part is received, will set me back another $1,300. This is something that has to end up as a recall as I'm sure I'm not the only owner to have this issue, or will have in the future. Regardless, do not start with the battery and waste you money. Have a diagnostic test run first. I will keep you updated on whether or not this actually works. I'm skeptical.

Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 46,800 miles

My 2011 Grand Cherokee Limited, 5.7L ; $46,850 plus a Zurich new vehicle "preferred" extended vehicle contract coverage for 84 months or 100,000 miles( $ 2,214.00 ). After sitting overnight the vehicle began to Not Start on the first try at 44,000 miles. It was weird, like it was out of gas but it was not, after several attempts and sometimes up to 8 tries it finally started and ran fine all day. I could make stops everywhere and she would start right up. As soon as she sat for several hours the No Start problem resurfaced.

On the last oil change at the dealer I told them about it and they said they fixed it and that I had some loose battery cables. When it happened again in the mornings I began to push the passenger seat forward exposing the battery compartment and would bang on it with my fist and low and behold the Jeep would start, but this quick fix did not last long. I used up all 4 of my AAA emergency calls addressing this problem, even installed a new battery.

Final tow got me back to the dealer where I was told they had to replace my TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) and the Zurich Group said it was not covered under their contract. Cost to me is $ 1,300, It is on back order, I have not had my jeep for five days now and after reading all the other NO START complaints I'm concerned that they really don't know what is wrong and their spending my money on a "hit and miss" attempt to fix this for good. I'm fighting Zurich right now because their contract states they cover the "electronic ignition system" but they did not specifically name the Totally Integrated Power Module in the contract language. I say bullshit, the word "SYSTEM" means just that, all the components comprised of that system and the TIPM is totally integrated with that system. No TIPM No Start.

After reading all the other electrical problems with the 2011 Jeep Grand online I'm wondering if we all really should be going after Jeep. I don't want to take on the world here, my life is too busy but I do want my jeep fixed and between both companies; I should not be out this cash. Not fixed yet, updates to follow. First thing tomorrow I am presenting my case to the dealer service manager with all the online complaints in hand.

Update from Aug 2, 2013: 8/2/2013: Yesterday I was told the TIPM is on back order until August 22nd and was given the Chrysler hotline number to complain and request a rental car. Case was assigned to Melody her phone number is: 855-675-9291 ext. 4718136 and my case number is: 23763751. Melody approved me for a 5 day rental, I said thank you but I'm already out my Jeep 7 days and their telling me the part won't be in till 8-22 and that's not good enough. She explained that her division now is scouring the globe to expedite my TIPM and that when the 5 days are up I need to call and get approval again for the next 5 days and go thru this process until the night mare is over.

Yesterday afternoon I go to the dealer to pick up my rental, the Enterprise rental guy is there and drives me to his office where for sh*ts and giggles I say, Hey you got any 2014 Grand Cherokee's you can give me. He looks up from his computer screen and says yeah we do, expect it's at the Jeep dealer because out of the blue it just wouldn't start. I said are you F__ng kidding me, OMG that's the same problem I have! bla bla bla, so now I'm in a Dodge Charger for 3 weeks. I'm building my case against Chrysler and Zurich; This is a live situation now; Please everyone participate and tell me your Jeep no start problems. Thank you

Update from Aug 24, 2013: August 24th, 2013 Update. My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee has now been in the shop for one month, Zurich Insurance company has backed down and agreed to pay the $1,300 replacement cost under their extended service plan that I purchased at the time I purchased the vehicle. That's the good news, Now the Bad News is that the TIPM didn't come in like it was supposed to on August 22nd, They don't know when it's coming in. "some time in September" is all I could be told. There are numerous other poor souls out there not aware of this growing problem and are being told they have to pay for this themselves. Everyone should lodge a complaint with the National Transportation Safety Board. This has all the signs of a major cover up. I was told "off the record" that 25,000 of these TIPM's are on back order in the USA and that the ONLY company with the license to make them is going out of business. Where does this leave all of us?

I love my jeep; It's my 5th one. Chrysler needs to FESS UP AND NOT COVER UP!

Yesterday morning hit the start button and it basically acted like it was having a seizure...started the ignition cycle but kept cycling and wouldn't kick over to full run mode. All dash lights stayed on and EVIC even displayed weird symbols. Tried to stop the "seizure" by hitting the stop/start button again but it just kept on. Did this little move for about 20 seconds then stopped by itself. Started like normal on the next try.

Was hoping it was a random one time fluke but it did something really similar when I was headed back from the store a few minutes ago. Sounds like I'm in for yet ANOTHER fun round of dealing with the service department. If my multiple previous dealings for warranty work are any indication, I will get a response similar to previous poster that they magically can't seem to recreate the problem. The funnest part will be arguing with them over providing me a rental car.

I've had this car (which I truly love from a ride/features/looks standpoint) for 2 years and paid a lot of money for a loaded out specially shipped model but I have had a major problem about every 4 months. THIS WILL BE THE 7TH TIME I WILL HAVE HAD TO TAKE IT BACK FOR WARRANTY WORK....3 times for the first problem (that occurred within 3 months of ownership and was never officially solved but magically disappeared) and 2 times for another (keyless start....I will post that in the appropriate section) and another time to replace the A/C unit (during which they scarred the leather dash, scratched the walnut steering wheel, scratched the dash, and dumped and trampled the contents of my glove box).

I started having a problem with my car starting a few months ago. The problem was very intermitent - only happening about once a month or so. It has gotten more frequent - maybe once or twice a week. It is definately annoying. When I push the start button, it will act like it is trying to crank for a while but never does and usually takes about 5 times over the course of 5 minutes to crank. I've taken it in once already and they just said it needed a few updates, but the issue has continued.

I dropped it off at the Jeep dealership on Friday morning for this issue - but suprisingly, they couldn't get the problem to recreate. I had taken videos on 2 seperate occasions, but they said that it wouldn't help. Basically, they contacted Chrystler who told them that there is a KNOWN issue with some sensor for the fuel injector not getting charged causing this problem, but until the dealership could recreate the problem, they would not cover it under warranty. So I have to leave my car at the dealership until they try to crank it and it doesn't work!

Update from Oct 17, 2013: The car was in the shop for 3 weeks and I couldn't leave it with them any longer so I picked it up. It drove OK for a while, only giving me issues every now and then. By the end of Sept, the issue had gotten noticably worse, practically every time my car sat for more than a couple hours, it would take about 20 times to start. I returned my car to the dealership on Sept 30. This time they had no problem diagnosing the issue because they were able to recreate the problem. The faulty part is called the Totally Intergrated Power Module. It tells the fuel injector to inject fuel. Trouble is, this part is on back order with an estimated ship date of October 25 - but confidence in this date is low. Until then I'm in a rental car.
