I know this has been a problem for Chrysler. I feel as though this repair should clearly be covered by the manufacturer, The repair is a bypass of the TIPM module. My dealership did discount the job and originally wanted $400.00 for the job. They did the job for $150.00

About a month ago my Jeep wouldn't start as I pushed the start button. It stayed in a cranking condition until I hit the Start/Stop button again. It did this a few more times and then after about 5 attempts at starting it finally turned over. This issue has happened every time I try to start the motor for the first time in the morning. After the first initial start in the morning, it would start for the rest of the day every time, except twice in the last month. Two days ago when I got home, I heard a small electrical motor sound after I turned off the vehicle. After checking around the vehicle I noticed underneath by the gas tank where the sound was coming from and determined that the fuel pump motor was not turning off! I disconnected the battery for about 1/2 hour and hooked it back up and the fuel pump motor had finally turned off for now anyway! I am still having the starting problems which is driving me crazy!! I am afraid that my Jeep won't start at all very soon. Today it took 8 times trying to start with the start button and with detaching the button and using the key fob. Problem is getting worse each day!!!

Please HELP!!! What to do! What to do!

I have read that other Jeep owners have had the same problems. My 2011 Jeep GC has about 59,000 miles on it! This problem sounds suspiciously like the problems GM is having with their ignition switches which have been on a recall notice!

Why doesn't Jeep have a recall on this problem!!! I guess they are waiting for someone to get killed like GM did! American auto makers today are run by sleazy CEO's that only care about their bottom line!

Update from Nov 17, 2014: Took my Jeep in to Chrysler dealer on 8/20/14 for repair. The dealer found:

The dealer checked and found fuel pump relay in TIPM is bad, causing a start and stall, or no start at times. Recommend installing external fuel pump relay. Relocated fuel pump relay externally from TIPM. Engine starts and runs ok now.

I have a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee that won't start/hard start. My tech told me I need to buy the TIPM but the price go over the $1,400.00. It's really a pain since this is a new unit that is no longer under warranty. The symptom was that the relay located in the TIPM turned off the fuel pump power; therefore the car won't start. Basically we use a temporary solution by providing power to the fuel pump from fuse M37 to M25, so far no issues. The fix definitely is to replace the TIPM.

We had leased the vehicle for myself and then bought out lease to give to my daughter in August. She left for college in August with her Grand Cherokee so excited and it started giving her problems right away. Everytime she had it towed in they thought she was crazy saying it wouldn't turn off, the lights were flashing, horn beeping. She had to take it in 4 times before they found out the issue so she was left without a vehicle for months because part was on back order.

Obviously this was an issue Chrysler Jeep knew about and did not have a recall or replace the part. I think it stinks and will never buy another Jeep/Chrysler part again. I hope a lawsuit hits them where it hurts and they own up to this.

Like everyone else, I have been a loyal Jeep customer for many years. Never had any issues before, this is a pain in the ass. And about $1300.00 to replace a part like this on a vehicle with less than 30000 miles is ridiculous.

Grand Cherokee 70th Anniversary Edition 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 18,100 miles

Well....we purchased our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 70th Anniversary Edition in May 2014. The vehicle is beautiful...clean, excellent condition and only 15,000 miles. Before we had made our 2nd payment the car was giving us problems starting. We had to have it towed to a service center where it stayed for a week. The technicians checked the electrical system, circuits, relays etc to find the fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. Fortunately we purchased an extended warranty which covered the cost of the pump replacement however the work was not authorized by the warranty company until an inspector visited the repair center for what reason we have no idea? The costs to investigate and find the problem however, were not covered costing us $375.

While the vehicle was in the shop we did some research to try to understand why it wouldn't start and what could have caused the fuel pump to fail. We discovered that there has been a long going issue with Chrysler and defective TPIMs. Subsequent issues including starting/stalling problems, safety and electrical etc. We also discovered that there has been a class action lawsuit placed against Chrysler.

My family and I are not comfortable driving in this vehicle and are discussing options to replace it before another potentially more serious problem occurs.

We did reach out to Chrysler to see if there was any information available but were told there was not.

We just bought this used from a Jeep dealer, factory certified in March and shortly after the 3 month bumper to bumper warranty ended this problem started happening frequently (cranks and will not start or cranks and starts and then shuts off), We took it to the dealer last weekend and they said they could not find the problem, it happened about 10 times in the last week since they gave it back to us. It's very disappointing to read all the customers who have this problem. My wife is a big Jeep owner and this is her 3rd and likely her last if Jeep does not make this right.

Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

Started with fuel pump not shutting off after vehicle was turned off.

Led to multiple jumps as it would drain the battery

Battery died and needed to be replaced along with the 150 amp fuse which was blown in a failed jump

After I picked it up I noticed failed starts in that it would crank but not turn over on first attempt. I could get it to turn over on second attempt. This would only happen after it has been sitting for a couple of hours.

At one point while driving 40 mph with foot off of the gas the engine stalled and I lost power steering and brakes. Tried to re-start but could not on first attempt. Had to turn off and turn back on again.

Dealership has nothing concrete but feels like the TIPM needs to be replaced.

Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6L

The vehicle started having problems starting, it would crank 3 to 6 times before starting. Once engaged it was fine until one day the fuel pump would not shut down; when ignition was turned off I needed to pull the fuse out of the ECM unit. A new ECM unit was installed and I was charged around $1200 for the repair but the new unit was defective: my blinker control would flash my fog light instead of the front blinker light, they rewired the wire harness to correct the missing wire in the ECM unit. Most of these units are on back order, that tells you they suck. Thanks for charging me $1200, Jeep.

As an electrical contractor, what I think that problem is is that the fuel pump relay is integrated into a electronic board under the fuse box and it's too small to handle the electrical arc during start up, which eventually melts the relay, and for me this can cause the car to shut down after starting, possible causing a accident or the fuel pump not to shut down after the ignition switch is turned off and possible causing a fire.

I am yet another victim to the faulty TIPM. It started relatively slowly, where it would take a couple tries to start the Jeep. I took out the battery and had it tested...100% charged. It didn't sound like the starter as it was cranking. So, after much research, I took it in fully expecting that the TIPM was the cause. Sure enough! After parts and labor, I was staring at a $1100 bill for something that should have been recalled by now. The dealer said that they see this all the time. Naturally, I was out of my warranty.

This is a real shame because I love this car. I hate to have any sort of negative vibe towards it or the way it is built. But, I have to say, this is very annoying, and potentially dangerous. What if my kid had an emergency and I was stuck without a vehicle!? I could go on, but everyone gets the point. This needs to be recalled, because it will inevitably happen to the majority of this model.

Sometimes the first start of the day the engine spins over but, it will not start. We found that sometimes we can push the Panic Button on and off and then try starting again and the engine will start. We also noticed that the keyless door locks will not operate properly. It appears to be the TIPM. After reading all the posts on the internet about this issue it would appear Chrysler knows about this issue but, has not issued a Recall yet.

Im in a nightmare with my 2011 grand cherokee for the past 2months every day the engine will crank but it will not start after 5 to 7 attempts finally it will start only to do it again if i have to shut the jeep off. I have been to the jeep dealership who charged me $125 an hour to try to find the problem 6hrs of sitting in the waiting room and they say the jeep isnt throwing a code sorry. I get in it to leave and it wont start go back to the service advisor ask for the mechanic to come see it and he says sorry they all went to lunch. He says its possible that its the tipm but the part alone cost $900 and they want to make sure thats the problem before they replace it. so the i should leave the jeep for a few days and rent a car. I left with my jeep and i am glad i did. I found out on chryslerproblem.com that there is a new class action lawsuit faulty tipm stalling/not starting vehicles included grand cherokee 2011 and 2012. Also on website carcomplaints.com june 18 2014 chrysler went under investigation for wont start wont turn over the tipm problem may end up being covered under warranty although some dealerships are awful rotten and act like this isnt what it should be a nation wide recall to replace all the tipms in every jeep grand cherokee 2011 and 2012 .The jeep corp. should be ashamed of themselves. i pray they get exactly what they deserved.

there are no words. i have been a loyal jeep owner since 1990. I purchased a 2011 jeep grand cherokee and have had nothing but problems. The jeep would not start and stalled. i took it to the jeep dealership who took 2hrs and charge me $130.00 an hr and said it wasn't throwing a code so they couldn't diagnose the problem. they knew perfectly well it was the TIPM (totally integrated power module) a class action suit was filed against the jeep corp. in may 2014 and 890,000 people have also had the same problem with the tipm. my local mechanic quickly figured out that it was the tipm. unfortunately the only place to purchase the tipm is from jeep dealership for $1,100 and if you wanted to keep the original tipm they charge you an additional $125.00. i thought that was paid for when i originally purchased the jeep for $35,0000. I think the jeep corp. needs to come clean and do a recall nationwide.

Bought Jeep new in 2011 so I won't have to bother with a used vehicle. This Jeep has been in the shop at least 30 times since. 2 weeks into they had to take gas tanks out and overhaul something under the car, then the warning dashboard lights kept coming on, the tires wore and had to get new tires at 30,000 miles. Dealer said alignment wasn't off, took it to tire dealer, it was.

Also car tries to start and doesn't at times. Also when accelerating the car will throw itself into low, dangerous when entering a ramp onto the parkway, can't get out of any ones way without reviving the engine (didn't). When starting the car it jumps forward often, the headlights, fog lights and running lights are always going out (costly).

The car sometimes will not shift into the next gear. Been at the dealer numerous times and nothing, they say I'm crazy (behind my back I'm sure) just waiting on some major problem which I'm sure is on the horizon. Also wheel welds are pretty rusty at times. (never happened on my Suzuki, actually never had a problem with it in 10 years, should have kept it).

Electrical system problem, starting problem intermittent and progressively got worse. The push start button failed to operate and had to use key, but had the same problem of continual cranking and not starting. I had taken the car to the dealer and they could not duplicate problems until it was persistent and they put it on the diagnostic system and it stated problem was the TIMP which was exactly what I had researched as the problem from reading this web site. it will now cost approximately $1,100.00 to fix the problem that should have been fixed under manufacturer warranty a year ago. Now that warranty is out and extended warranty will not cover cost.

When I took it to the dealer he said it was unsafe to drive because of all the diagnostic problems detected due to the bad TIMP.

I called TSB and made a complaint since it was diagnosed by the dealer as unsafe to drive. I encourage everyone having electrical problems to make a complaint by simply calling the TSB at 1-888-327-4236 to hopefully Chrysler to recall this part for the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
