Can’t afford the full replacement of the tank at the moment so just dealing with horrendous situation at the gas pump in the meantime. I’m the original owner and have never had an issue until recently.

Will FCA USA stands behind its products? Since I bought this car six years ago, I have experienced many issues including dead battery (warranty covered), leaking sunroof (warranty covered), blistering paint (claim rejected, quoted $2300 by the dealer), misaligned wheels (costing >$150 for re-alignment, >$500 for new tires), broken wheel bearings (>$600 for two), and now bad check valve or ball inside the fuel tank (reported and quoted for $1400 to fix by the dealer). These are are all related to defective parts or poor workmanship. None of them are my faults. Will I buy another car by Chrysler or FCA USA? I work for a FCA USA supplier and know about the quality assurance. I'll let my family members, friends and coworkers know. I also wish this message is well received by any potential FCA USA customers.

Update from May 21, 2016: Today I filled gas in this specific car at Costco (as I usually do), and surprisingly I didn't have any problem with fuel re-filling. While I was leaving the parking lot after shopping, the engine suddenly stalled, and the MIL indication came on. If this happened on highway, it could be very dangerous. I then turned off the engine, waited for a few seconds, and started it again. It did start normally in spite of the MIL ON, but quickly stalled again. I tried again, and the engine appeared to work with MIL ON. I then drove 8 miles away to a parking garage, waited for one hour, and drove it back to home without engine stalling issue, but the MIL was always on. I'll took it to the dealer as soon as I can.

It is nearly impossible to fill the fuel tank. Once the gas starts to fill, it shuts off after a few seconds. It takes forever to put gas in the tank.

I took the car to the local dealership, and was given some gibberish about the filler neck, flap not working, inlet check valve being blocked, blah blah blah. Bottom line, cannot be fixed and a new gas tank will need to be installed. They quoted me a price of $1400.00 to have a new tank installed. I am a fairly handy female, have installed my own faucets in the past, however, I do not know how to replace a gas tank or I would. A new gas tank retails from Mopar.com for $517....does it take $900 worth of labor to install a gas tank?!

Upon doing more research, I found that this was a common problem with many Chrysler vehicles, including Jeeps. There was even a Technical Service Bulletin issued, in TSB 14-001-09 REV.A, and an extended warranty on the gas tank for many makes/models, but not for the 2009 Jeep Patriot. So, I called the dealer back and asked how they diagnosed the issue, and they basically repeated the steps on the TSB above, but when I questioned whether this was a common issue, they denied it.

My only option is to shell out $1400, or buy a refurbished tank and find another mechanic who would do it for less. I don't understand why the Jeep Patriot was not included in this TSB when this exact same issue exists.

No one at the dealership or at Jeep customer care gives a hoot, and they deny this is a defect. There is no accountability or responsibility acknowledged.

I am sure there are other Jeep owners who have experienced this problem and would love to know how many Jeep owners have had to replace their gas tanks, because not everyone will complain.

If this is a stuck rollover valve, is this not a safety issue?

Has anyone had luck resolving this fuel filling problem? I have an 09 Jeep Patriot Sport I bought used about a month ago (only 21,000 miles!) and I have this same problem every time I fill up, every pump I've tried cuts off every half gallon or less if I try to rush the fill up. I rolled the dice with my regular mechanic and had him replace the fuel filler neck and $200 later I still have the problem. I just had this done today 2/9/13.

On my way home I stopped by a Jeep Dealership and they mentioned it could be the entire gas tank needs to be replaced because of a faulty valve where the filler neck connects to the tank but would need to go through diagnostic tests to verify the actual problem.

Just seeing if anyone had it resolved?

Thanks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trouble fueling Patriot I just had my gas tank replaced. It solved the fueling problem. It cost me $800, OUCH! It turned out to be a faulty roll over valve located inside the gas tank, only way to fix it is to replace the entire tank.

I suggest anyone with this problem to file a complaint with the NHTSA as a I feel a faulty roll over valve is most definitely a safety issue. Maybe if they get enough complaints they will open an investigation and get a recall on it, at the very least a TSB so we don't have to waste our money on unneeded work.

Best of luck! Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message
