Steering is weird it randomly jerks to the right and left, I have taken it in multiple times and they can't seem anything wrong with it but it can't be safe that my Jeep jerks and veers while driving

Wrangler 4-cyl

  • 100 miles
Steering gear has excessive play. No on-center steering response for 1-2" of steering wheel arc length. Makes straight driving unsafe by reducing control and increasing the time lag to correct for cross winds, road surface, or other drivers/obstacles. Inspection has led to noticing all the play coming from the steering gearbox itself. This happens at all speeds, however the most dangerous is by far straight high-speed highway driving. Dealer has been honest and says this is a common complaint. Has not been able to identify a guaranteed fix based on experience with other cars to date.

As I drove off the lot I noticed the instrument panel had a distortion on it. Dealership was unable to fix (after a software upgrade). More concerning is the car shakes violently when hitting a bump in the road. I took it in 3 times without resolution. Always on the highway, at first at high speeds, now even going below the speed limit. Sometimes it resolves on it's own, but lately I have to slow down or stop to make the shaking stop. (which is very dangerous when driving on a 65mph highway), the steering wheel shakes left to right and is very loose during these times. I feel very unsafe and it feels like the wheels are going to fall off. This is a brand new vehicle. It happened 5 times on a 15 mile trip to work this morning and has been happening since I bought the car in late February 2019.

Handling while driving at freeway speeds is terrible. The steering constantly wanders and requires not stop corrections to maintain lane position. If any bumps in the road or wind is present, the risk of wandering into another lane is greatly increased and I have narrowly avoided several collisions with other vehicles already.

The steering on this Jeep is dangerous. It wonders all over the road. I have to keep both hands on the wheel at all time with a death grip. I feel extremely unsafe driving this Jeep. I have taken it to the dealership 4 times now and it has not improved. Jeep is now telling me that there is nothing else they can do and I am just stuck with it.

I picked up my new Jeep at the dealer and went not even a couple blocks away and noticed the steering was really sloppy. The dealer called to get my email and I told them about it. They said bring it back, which I did today( the next morning.) too much play, constant corrections, drifted. I just dropped it off and they said it had a steering damper recall on the vehicle. This is my 3rd Jeep Wrangler(1999 and 2004) were my other ones and they were fine. Jeep needs to address this asap. It is not safe and I am not very hopeful this recall will fix it.

The steering is sloppy with 2-4 inches of "play" in the steering wheel when driving. I have had the recall done for dampener replacement, but it still tries to "walk" the road side to side due to the slack in the steering. I am told this is an issue with the electrical assist, but it needs addressed. I drive for hours and having to fight this back and forth the entire time is unsafe. Also, the windshields are not sloped enough for areas where there are many bugs. The windshield becomes so congested with splattered bugs it's hard to see. The washers and wipers cannot scrape away the debris either because the impact is so hard is plasters them to the glass, and takes high pressure water or vigorous scrubbing to remove. This is a poor windshield design flaw that most every other automobile does not have an issue with.

I was going around 65 mph on the freeway and I hit a pothole, my Jeep started to "death wobble". it stated to violently shake and vibrate almost pulling the steering wheel out of my hand. I slowed down to under 45 mph and it stopped. The violent shaking lasted for about 6-10 seconds. I just purchased the Jeep 2 days ago. It is completely stock with the factory tires and the pressure in them was fine. It was also not cold, the high at the time was 97 degrees.

Brand new vehicle, now has 200 miles. From beginning, it tracks to the right when in motion. Dealer said alignment is perfect, they cross rotated tires, are in process of trying to figure it out, but I suspect it may be the electronic assist steering inputting right steer for some reason. Have heard many complain about steering box issues with Jeep jl Wrangler, unknown if this is related to that.

While driving vehicle home from dealership after purchase I noted a dead spot in the steering of about 3 to 4 inches where there is no steering response to movement of the steering wheel and the vechicle was dangerous to drive as it was extremely difficult to keep it in my lane. I have worked with Jeep cares and have opened 2 cases, 58775069, 59043175 and have been to 3 different dealerships trying to get this fixed. The 1st 2 dealerships drove the vehicle on and stated there was no problem, this is how Jeep are designed. The 3rd dealership drove it with me in the car on the same type of roads I drive (2 lane country roads with no shoulder. They noted that the alignment was off and re-aligned the steering. This did help with the exteme swing the vehicle would take on its own into oncoming traffic or toward the shoulder but did nothing to resolve the 3" to 4" deadspot in the steering. I will be opening a 3rd Jeep cares case this week. This dead spot causes what I would call "driver induced oscillation" as minor of fine steering corrections are exaggerated with the 3" to 4" deadspot so you inadvertantly overcorrect and then have to re-correct the otherway again thru a 3" to 4" deadspot. The vehicle is a danger to myself and others on the road. Jeep seems to be trying to avoid the buyback or lemon law by stating there is no problem the vehcile is designed to have a 3" to 4" dead spot in the steering. The vehicle extremely difficlut to keep in its lane while driving on 2 lane country roads at standard road speeds of 35 to 50 miles per hour, with no shoulder.

2019 Jeep Wrangler 2dr. Jeep can not hold a straight line. Requires constant correction input. When correcting it will start to travel in the corrected direction and will continue to travel in that direction until correcting in the other direction. Have taken it to the diealership 1X and told there is nothing wrong with it. Technician comments on the paperwork "vehicle drove fine and not wonder all over the road". after getting mine back, test drove another 2019 and did not experience the same issue. It was able to hold a straight line with little to no input. Have drove other new Jeep that did not have the wonder issue. Note the other Jeep have had Michelin or Goodyear tires. Mine has Bridgestone. I have been told that this is just the way they drive. I have owned 7 Jeep Wrangler and none have drove like this. My wife has a 2018 and does not have the wandering issue. This happens at all speeds.

Excessive play in steering/ wandering on road, constantly correcting steering to keep Jeep in my lane. When between vehicles on highway or just driving down the road I need to keep correcting the steering to keep in my lane. Had a few close calls between big rigs on highway. I'm concerned for my family and my safety driving this new 2019 Jeep rubicon 2 door. The Jeep is all stock no lift kit. This has been happening since I took possession of the car on April 1st 2019

I just experienced the death wobble on a highway in columbus Ohio. I was driving around 65 and hit a small bump and the car started shaking violently. It did not stop after about 60 seconds so I pulled over to the berm. It scared me to death. I felt like I had no control. I started back up and made it safely to my destination. I plan to call local dealer since I am away from where I purchased it originally.

Dead space in the steering wheel, 2' of play in the wheel where input is put in and no response. Loose steering and drift while driving. Unable to maintain a straight line without constant steering correction. Very noticeable at freeway speeds as the vehicle will want to drift left or right immediately after correcting steering. Constantly have to give steering inputs, sawing at the wheel. Occurs all the time. More noticeable at higher speeds. Feels unsafe to operate. Jeep claims this is normal and how the vehicle was designed.
