  • 109,776 miles
As we excited the freeway, the car started running rough at the stop light. As I pulled into the gas station the engine stopped running on its own and I heard a loud "ping". after numerous attempts to re-start the car, we had to leave it at the gas station over night. When I was trying to re-start the car I noticed the engine wasn't cranking at all, almost like it was a dead battery. In the morning the car started right up but with a horrible loud knocking sound coming from the engine. I had to drive it home which is about 3miles, I had no other options. It was explained to me it was a rod knocking. I still owe $8,247.89 and to fix it is going to be well over $5,000. The car has 109,776 miles, my husband maintained it religiously, and to have this happen so close into paying it off is devastating as this was our only car. There was no warning, no check engine light, no low oil light, no rough idling or out of place sounds.

The contact owns a 2014 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 mph, there was an abnormal clicking noise and dark gray smoke coming from under the hood. The contact mentioned that once the vehicle was pulled over and the hood was open the smoke extinguished independently. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where they informed the contact that the vehicle was burning oil and the engine seized. The vehicle was then towed to courtesy Kia of brandon (9205 E adamo dr, tampa, fl 33619) where they confirmed that the engine seized and it was not due to the catalytic converter. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that the failure was not because of the catalytic converter. The contact stated that the failure could be related to NHTSA campaign number: 19V120 (engine, engine and engine cooling). The approximate failure mileage was 103,052.

The engine in the car was running very roughly. It kept getting worse. We took it to the dealer and were told the rod bearings went bad at 98K miles with regular oil changes and normal driving. We were quoted $5084 for a new long block assembly or $5500 for a new short block assembly from the dealer. This repair is approximately the same amount the car is worth running and should not have to be done with such low mileage. Because we are the 2nd owners, there is no warrantee to cover the repair. We had to tow the car from the dealer and it hasn't run since. I believe this is a common defect that should be researched as Kia had the same problem in the 2017 sorento/optima. I believe there will be more similar issues as other owners begin reaching the 100K mark in these vehicles and there should be a recall to cover these expensive, unnecessary repairs.

I got in my car and left work. As soon as I started to drive it was making a horrible noise. I immediately drove it to the local mechanic which is in close proximity to my work. It was diagnosed by both that shop, and a Kia dealership shop as having "connecting rod knock." I was advised not to drive it because it is unsafe. It is at risk of either a sudden stall, which could cause a crash or, a rod may be thrown out the side of the block, puncturing engine oil causing a fire. In addition, the repair is essentially a new engine, which costs over 10K. I have repeatedly sought remedy via Kia corporation to no avail. Kia has refused to fix this dangerous car despite there being a recall on this exact issue on the 2014 Kia Soul but, the loophole they are sticking with is that mine has the bigger engine. I've had this car about a year and a half, driven it just over 5,000 miles, have done regular oil changes and only done small town, light driving. The car has just over 64,347 miles on it. There has been media coverage about this exact issue that states Kia has many more faulty vehicles that need recall status, Souls being mentioned. That article is here: Https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/Kia-recalls-another-192K-cars-due-risk-engine-fire/ajxphzfahrczzjcxmmvrw3dxpy/. I respectfully request NHTSA help in requiring that Kia completely fix this manufacturing defect that has left this car useless and unsafe. It would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I was driving on the highway going the speed limit. I turned down the radio due to hearing a shaking noise. The shaking noise began to get louder and shook my whole car. I quickly pulled over to the side and turned my car off resulting in smoke coming from the engine. I immediately got out of the car. I returned to my car the following morning to see if the car was in need of coolant or oil. The oil reservoir was full but the oil pan was empty for some reason. We filled it will oil waited a bit and tried to turn the car back on. The engine shaking only got worse. I called road side assistance to take my car to the Kia dealership. Once at the dealership after doing some research there is a recall out on my car for the catalytic converter that I was made aware of previously by auto zone after doing a free diagnostic check on my car last year. While reading into the recall it states a piston rod can be thrown from the car puncturing the engine causing oil to escape from the engine. This is the exact words the service guy at Kia had said happened to my car. He said since my car would not be able to be on long enough while seizing to check if the catalytic converter was the cause that he would not fix the car even though the recall specifically states what is wrong with my car and what would happen if not taken care of. Now I am in a position of having a car I owe 9K on but is only worth 400$ with no engine. With this I can get a car for almost 500$ which is not close to reasonable and I should not even consider. I take very good care of my car. It has a little of 120,000 miles on it and I am the second owner. I have always gotten oil changes and have never had issues with not keeping up with my car. I know I am not in fault for this. Recall number 19V120

While driving our 2014 Kia Soul base 2.0L on the highway at approximately 60mph, the engine suddenly started making a very loud knocking noise. The driver was able to pull off at the next ramp to check the oil. There was no oil on the stick and it had a burnt smell. There oil had been changed by the dealership about 6 weeks prior, and we had no indication that the oil was low, the engine hasn't been smoking, and there was no oil on the ground. The shop has never mentioned our oil being low when we came in for a change. We had the vehicle towed to the dealership. They have since told us the engine needs to be completely replaced. Of course we are just past the warranty with about 109,000 miles on it.

While driving my vehicle, there was a knock sound under my hood. The vehicle started to slow down and started to smoke. I pulled the vehicle over and cut the engine. I then tried to restart the vehicle and it did not respond. I then had the vehicle towed to the nearest repair shop, where they told me that the rod had pierced through the engine block causing all of the oil to leak from the engine and breaking the starter.

My Kia Soul is burning oil every 1,000 excessively. Kia says it isn't burning that much. My dealer thinks it is. My car had the oil light come on in December. Received an oil change. February comes to start my consumption tests. My dipstick reads low level. I started 3 tests and they all 3 came up with different readings but burning oil at a rapid rate.I did testing each 1,000 miles. The 2nd test my car burnt a quart. I do think my car is burning at a rapid rate. It is a 2014 Kia Soul with 94,000 miles. I bought brand new, only owner is me from my dealership.

As I was driving down the highway, "55 mph" speed limit was 60 mph my acceleration went out on my car and I couldn't go any faster then 20/25mph. My car started to sound like a weed eater and I never got a single light for something being wrong. As I pulled over to the side of the road my cars engine started to make a knocking sound. I had it towed to a shop close to were I live and they told me that the engine had pieces of metal flakes in it and that it was locked. They also said that it was 3.5 quarts low of oil but I just had the oil change and had about 3,500 miles left before I needed my next oil change. I'm writing on here because I called Kia and they told me that my 2.0 engine didn't have a recall on it, but as I research I continue to find many people who have a 2.0 engine having the same issue of the recall on the 1.6 engines.

The oil from the engine has been disappearing ever since the car got over 100K miles. It is currently at 116K and has zero oil but there is no leak and it doesn't smell like it is burning. The dealership says it is not covered under the recall and it will cost thousands to repair. This is exactly what is described in the recall notification I got last year though but the dealership said my particular engine is not covered under this recall even though it's the 1.6L specifically stated in the recall announcement.

I was with on the highway and noticed a noise that I hadn't heard before. I was about 40 miles from home so I headed towards home and as 8 was driving down the highway, the noise was gradually getting louder, I had no idea what it was, not one warning light came on. Suddenly while going just over 60mph, my car stalled, would not restart. While cars zoomed past me going faster than I. I made my way to the side of the road, luckily avoiding getting hit. Still no lights had come on until it stalled completely. I was thankful but shocked to hear the next day from my mechanic that a rod had come broke loose in my car and broke through the engine. That I had a car that needed a $6000+ new engine and that engine replacements for this car model and year are very hard to come by. I am disgusted.. I will never buy a Kia again in my life. I called Kia and asked them how could my car get this bad without any warning lights? they said they weren't sure, it should have. That certainly doesn't help me. I have a 6 year old car that is almost worthless. I still need to finish paying it off. Ridiculous.

2014 Kia Soul with 2.0 engine (84,000 miles) suddenly started knocking then locked up going around 60 mph on the highway. This was so sudden that it caused the tires to squeal. If anyone had been behind me there is a great chance it would have caused an accident. Then it unlocked and continued knocking. At no time did any lights come on such as the check engine or oil lights. I pulled off and had the vehicle towed. The dealership informed me that the engine would have to be replaced at a cost $6,000 which is close to the overall value of the vehicle. I am now facing a very difficult financial dilemma and hardship for something beyond my control.

I purchased a 2014 Kia Soul from doug smith autoplex on 11-19-2019. The car purchase included a 3 month/3,000 mile warranty I called in on 12-12-2019 to schedule an appointment with service to inspect a noise from the engine. The appointment was scheduled for 12-20-2019, I added a quart of oil to the engine. 12-20-2019, I went to the appointment. Rick larsen test drove the car and filled the radiator fluid. Rick told me to come back if the noise returned. Rick did not run any diagnostic tests. The scheduled appointment was covered under the warranty offered at the time of purchase. 02-14-2020 I added another 1\2 quart oil and filled the windshield fluid. A noise returned to the engine on 02-20-2020. I called at 2pm on to schedule an appointment for service. The service department set the appointment for Friday 02-21-2020. The engine seized with no warning lights ever coming on prior to it seizing 02-20-2020 evening on I-15 freeway southbound @5:40pm. The Kia Soul was immediately towed to the doug smith dealership by john's towing. I was accused by the sales mgr ed of doing a faulty job of an oil change and that the oil had run out all over the undercarriage. I was later told by the same sales mgr ed, that the seal on the oil plug and filter had never been broken.
