CX-5

  • Automatic transmission
  • 71,458 miles

Car would rev at stop or lights and then lurch forward. Mazda has no clue.

It is not obvious to the mechanics because of where the solenoid is located. But if they have this information, they know where to look and can discover what part of the solenoid needs to be addressed.

CX-5 GT 2.5L I4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 99,419 miles

I have been having the same issue idle surging and hard clunk into gear with my cx-5. I do have a check engine light on which is giving the code P0171 (fuel system too lean) but my mechanics cannot find any vacuum leaks.

The vehicle is not safe to drive in heavy traffic, and I'm beginning to think it is a manufacture defect, since there are numerous people reporting the same issue.

Has anyone found a solution to the problem? We may need to file a formal complaint with Mazda CO and they will have to issue a recall.

Update from Feb 29, 2020: SUCCESS! This problem has been fixed. My car had a vacuum leak caused by a vapor purge solenoid being stuck open. Replaced the solenoid and the car is running perfectly again. Hope that helps any of you having the same problem.

CX-5 Grand Touring AWD 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 34,000 miles

Similar to as others have reported. The engine was in drive and the brake pedal was fully depressed. The car was stopped for at least 5 seconds- at which point the engine starts to rev, I hear a loud clunk from behind and the car jumps forward at least 5 feet. Feels as though I was hit from behind. This happened to me twice. Brought it in to the dealer and they have no idea why I am having this issue. The only thing they could find was that the car needed a TCM update. Based on what other users have reported here, I'm not sure if that will solve this problem (and neither is the dealer).

CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,550 miles

This is a scary problem! Most often happens when the car is warm, but not hot. Just after downshifting to a complete stop, the car suddenly starts to rev up to 4000-5000 RPM. Dealer updated all software, but the problem has occurred 2 more times in the past 5000 miles. The last time I was standing on the brakes with both feet for about 30 seconds. Tried shifting from drive to park ... no joy. Finally the engine stopped revving for no apparent reason. If this happened at a busy intersection it would most definitely cause an accident.

CX-5 Sport 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 11,000 miles

Twice now the vehicle has lurched forward from a stop with the engine in drive and the brake fully depressed. Before this happens, the engine starts revving high like it's in neutral then acts like it's hard slammed into 1st gear with a screech of tires when just the brake was depressed. The first time it cause damage to the car as I was sat in my drive behind my wife's truck. The second time it sent me out from a drive through exit into the crossing lanes of traffic. I have had 2 computer updates at the dealer and still no real answer or fix. The wife now refuses to drive the vehicle and I am scared to have my daughter in the car with me.

Any ideas or solutions from people with the same issue please let me know, car is now at 13,000 miles.

Any help appreciated.

CX-5 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 28,000 miles

I was stopped at a light, car revved, then felt like I was hit from behind. My thought it might be a transmission problem. Any thoughts? I took it in to dealer for problem before and was told they could not find anything wrong with it. I am taking in again for second time and a second instance of same problem.

CX-5 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 6,835 miles

Approaching a stop light and put brake on and then the engine started revving very high. I am absolutely sure I had the brake on and not also pressing the accelerator as my wife suggests. I've been driving for 35 years. Even when I threw it into neutral and then park, it continued and then suddenly it was working. Don't trust it. Anyone else experience this?

CX-5 2500 Cc

  • Automatic transmission
  • 6,200 miles

In the 6 months that I have had the car (purchased new) this has happened 5 times:

I will be stopped, left foot on the brake (thank goodness) and the right foot just covering the accelerator (not pressing on it but touching it) when the engine will rev up to really high RPM (over 3500) as if it is in neutral and I am pressing the accelerator, and then suddenly engage the transmission causing a loud clunk and a sudden forward jerk (arrested by the brake) and in one case a screech of the tires.

Every time I felt like I have been rear-ended, but most of the times there was no car behind me at all.

The most recent time I had two other guys in the car with me and they helped me identify the sequence of events. One of them thought I was revving up for a drag race.

When I took it to the dealership after the first two times (both times I was out of town at the time) the service guy said that the engine was "just getting used to how I drive" which sounds a little odd, but, OK, what do I know about the engine computer?

After the last few times I keep thinking of taking it in but then it behaves for weeks and I think its the last time.

Any suggestions?
