Daughter parked her vehicle in the driveway. Open up drivers side door got out of the vehicle. The radio and dash lights came on, so she reached inside to push the electronic ignition button. Everything went dead and then came back on. She does it again, same thing happen. She moves her wallet which was on the side of the shifter to make sure it was in park. Once she moved the wallet vehicle started to back up and dragged her down a hill. She was able to grab the steering wheel and looked at the shifter which was still in park. The shifter was vibrating and making noise. After being dragged for roughly 100 yards she pushed herself away from the car because she thought she was going to die. With in a minute neighbors were at her side. The police, fire department and ambulance arrived within five minutes. After calming my daughter down who was badly bruised and covered in bark dust the police look inside the vehicle and ask if anyone was inside the vehicle, no one had touch the vehicle. The vehicle was not running and vehicle was still in PARK. Once the door is open and vehicle is moving shouldn't the electronic brake assist suppose to kick on? We will wait to see what they find. Sounds like another issues like the grand Cherokee which killed the Star Trek actor last year. I will bet that they say they haven't found nothing wrong. Eventually it will become a flash because to many module talking to each other and it needed an update.
Update from Feb 15, 2017: Dealership who looked at vehicle was able to duplicate concern, except will not put on the repair order because all sensors are o.k. Where is the customer service gone today, covering up for the Manufacture and lawyers will not take them on because of there deep pockets. Insurance company said they will just have to pay for damage on car. So this means I have to put my daughter in her brand new car and pray to god it doesn't happen again. Where is the sense of urgency for the health of others. I didn't know the car manufacture can act as GOD!! (:

Vehicle can be shut off in any gear. My driveway slopes to street. Every time I turn engine off when I get home, I hit the "start/stop" button with engine in gear and not park and it starts to roll out of my driveway. I once found that my CX5 had rolled out of a parking spot and had blocked traffic, when I stopped at a fast food restaurant. I live in Florida where things are relatively flat. I have taken the CX5 to Kentucky where it was a terrible problem with the topography there. You need to get rid of the "start button" and replace it with an "Ignition Key." My son in law has a Toyota which when turned off while in gear automatically flips it into Park. I approached the Mazda dealer about this problem several times and they refuse to even recognize it as a problem or issue. They said that they are unaware of this problem. I will NOT get another Mazda when my lease is up.
