  • 51,000 miles
Electronic throttle body stuck open and vehicle went into "limp mode". I was forced to coast to the side of the road, and shut off the vehicle. After a few seconds, I restarted the vehicle, and within five minutes, the same thing happened. I have had the car parked ever since because I feel that this is unsafe, as when this occurs, I have no ability to accelerate, I just have to hope that the cars behind me are paying attention.

Driving 65 mph on highway and car lost all power and yellow wrench light illuminated on dash. With car in limp mode pulled over to service lane. Car towed to local Ford dealer. Dealer replaced defective battery but found no codes stored in computer. Dealer test drove vehicle and reported no problem. Three days later same incident (loss of power and wrench light). Shut vehicle off and restarted it and engine had normal power L with wrench light extinguished. Drove vehicle to local Ford dealer and left it there for more diagnostics and repair. Very dangerous condition and feeling for all engine power to be gone unexpectedly.

The first incident occurred while traveling on a highway going almost 60 mph when the cruise control stopped and the car slowed and when you pushed the gas petal it did nothing. We slowed and tried to pull to the side of the road, as the car was almost to a stop it started jerking and sputtering almost dying. We put it in park and turned the engine off. We turned the engine back on and it started just fine then this same thing continued to happen every few miles. Check engine light was on so we took it in to have a computer hooked up to see what was wrong but the check engine light had turned off so they were unsure. The problem seemed to just go away for about a week and then it happened again and we got it in and hooked up to a computer and got the codes which we were informed meant we needed the throttle body replaced and it was a common problem with these cars and to contact a Ford dealer. Since this last incident it has happened multiple times causing us to not be able to drive the car even a few blocks without it happening 3-4 times. We are now without a vehicle as it is not only unsafe to drive but very inconvenient to have to stop and go a million times to make a short drive. This is ridiculous and from all I have researched it a huge problem for many owners of these and similar cars! this is dangerous and should be recalled and those with issues should not be responsible for making these repairs!

Driving on highway when I was no longer able accelerate in my 2010 Mercury Milan. The car began to jerk and the throttle control/transmission light came on. I turned car off and on and then could drive a few more miles when it repeated the scenario above. I was able to drive it to dealership. It did that a total of 6 times on the way to dealership and eventually both the throttle control & the service engine soon light was on. Dealership fixed my car, replacing the throttle body but charged me saying the problem was not under any warranty.

I was driving to work when my 2010 Mercury Milan lost power. First the engine began missing and running rough, and then the engine stalled and the RPM dropped to idle speed (idling rough). The engine would not respond to the accelerator pedal. No throttle was present. The engine continued to idle (but it was a rough idle). The wrench light on the dashboard came on. I steered the car to the shoulder and turned the ignition off. After waiting a minute or so, I restarted the engine, and it started almost normally (it took a few more cranks of the starting motor for the engine to start). Then I drove to work and aside for seeming to miss from time to time, the engine ran normally. There was no wrench light visible on the dashboard. However, that afternoon, on the way home from work, the problem happened again as described above. The engine seemed to be running normally, then started missing, and stalled. The 'wrench light' came on. I pulled off the road, turned the engine off, waited a few minutes, and then re-started the engine. There was no 'wrench light' and the engine appeared to run normally. This series of events happened three more times before I was able to get the car home and park it in the driveway. This issue happened on July 9, 2013. I took the car to the dealership and was told that the electronic throttle body had malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. Losing power as described above while driving in traffic is extremely dangerous.

I had just pulled out of my driveway this morning and began to accelerate, up to about 20 mph, when all of a sudden I lost total power. I looked down at the dash while steering the vehicle over to the side of the street, and noticed the "wrench" light was lit up. I immediately shut the car off, and got out my manual. The manual said the light indicated a transmission/power train/AWD issue. I thought I would attempt to start the car again, and see what it would do. I restarted the vehicle, and the wrench light was no longer went, and I had power when I put it in gear. I took my chances, and went ahead and drove it work, hoping it was just a fluke, but decided I would investigate to see if others had experienced the same issue. I came across the entire listing of others who were experiencing this issue so thought I better immediately get it to the dealer and put on diagnostics. I explained to them what I thought the issue might be, the throttle body problem I had read about. They put it on diagnostics, but the only code which came up was a P0456, saying I needed to replace a valve--this code is indicated by the "service engine" light, and not the "wrench". he said they could find no codes for the "wrench" light. I told him that was strange, because the wrench light came on when I lost power. He told me the P0456 could make the car have the same types of issues. I told him I had been driving with the P0456 code for an extended period of time, and it had never affected the performance of the vehicle, so I didn't understand why it would do it now. I feel like this is the same type of issues others are experiencing, but the service manager told me previously when they saw the throttle body issue, there was always a code. Not sure why there is no code showing up, but that also seems to be common. Guess I will take my chances driving at this point.

I was driving to work with the cruise control set at 55mph. The car suddenly lost power and throttle response. There was a wrench warning light lit up on the instrument panel. Had no choice but to pull the car over to the shoulder. I turned off the car and restarted it. The wrench light disappeared and I had throttle response. I drove it 3 more miles down the highway and the car did it again. I pulled to an off ramp and took the car by city streets back home. I later took the car to my fathers shop where they hooked up a handheld 'scanner' to it and was unable to pull the wrench light code. I tooled the car back home and parked it and started driving my truck. I had my mechanic buddy bring his mac tool scanner to my house and we hooked it to the car and he was unable to pull the code. So we drove the car with the scanner hooked up and waited for the car to act up again. It acted up again on the highway. We pulled over and got a code saying the "tac is stuck open". I believe it to be a bad throttle body assembly. I researched this on google.

The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Milan. The contact stated while driving 45 mph the engine light illuminated and the vehicle began to decelerate independently. The vehicle was turned off and restarted several minutes later and began to operate as designed; however, the failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 54,000.

The first time this problem occurred was at a stop sign. The car engine idle became erratic, the engine light came on, and when I tried to pull away from the stop sign the car would not respond to the accelerator. Pulled to side of road and turned off the engine, waited approximately 2 minutes and then restarted. The engine ran fine. The second time this problem occurred I was driving at 40 mph. The car engine speed became erratic, then the car lost power and would not respond to the accelerator. Pulled to the side of the road and turned off the engine, waited approximately 2 minutes, and then restarted. The engine ran fine. Took the car to my mechanic who read the engine codes and told me I need a throttle body.

The vehicle stalls and requires pulling over to the side of the road. It sputters until turned off. Then will resume travel after restarting. This happened on multiple occasions in an intersection, on an off ramp, on a busy city street. The dealership initially said they didn't know what the cause was and that I should continue driving and see if it happened again. On July 7th, during a single drive home, the car shut down every couple of minutes and required my family & I pull over. We were on the side of the road many times on a busy highway, windy back roads--very scary not knowing when the car would fail, how fast cars behind us were traveling, whether or not cars would see us coming around a turn... now they tell me the part needed is on back order because of the number of similar problems and they don't know when the part will be in. The car is way too dangerous to drive at this point so I am forced to pay for a rental car until the part comes in. Hoping for a recall!

Engine intermittently fails to accelerate when depressing accelerator, threw engine code P2111. This problem appears to be temporarily corrected by turning car off, then back on. This incident has occurred at both high speeds & around town driving. Also noted that the days of occurrence, the outside temperature was over 90 degrees.

While driving on the highway 60 mph without warning the wrench light illuminated and the vehicle lost power. I had no engine control. Was able to shift into neutral and pull over safely onto the shoulder without being rear ended. Engine exhibited rough idle approximately 800 to 900 RPM. The car was in a limp mode.the gas pedal had no effect. Turned the ignition off and restarted the vehicle wrench light turned off and was able to drive the vehicle normally for 5 miles before the wrench light illuminated and the vehicle lost power. I was able to drive the car home. Connected a scan tool to the obd and no codes were present. The following day driving with the scan tool connected at 40 mph the same symptoms occurred. The scan tool registered code P2111 throttle actuator control system stuck open. Fortunately I was able to pull safely. Mentioned the issue to the local Lincoln dealer and was told this is a common problem with this vehicle and the throttle body assembly needs to be replaced. Was told that the part in on national back order and is not available. This is not acceptable. The problem occurred 6 times within a 10 day period. This car is not safe to drive. The vehicle should be recalled without hesitation and the safety issue resolved.

I was driving about 45 mph and felt a jerk motion and lost engine responses to gas pedal. The check engine and the wrench lights came on. I managed to pull it over on the road shoulder and stopped engine and restarted it. I continued to drive and this happened again in 2 miles. I stopped and restarted engine and drove home carefully. I did a research online and found this might be caused by the engine throttle body issue complained by a lot of Mercury 2010 owners. I called a Mercury/Lincoln dealer and they asked for $800 to fix it if this was a throttle body issue. They also told me there is no recall on this problem.

The car behaves as if it was suddenly put into neutral. When you hit the gas the engine revs, but the transmission does not engage. The wrench and engine lights come on, and the car will sometimes sputter like it is going to shut off completely. The only way to get the car to function normally is to stop the car and turn it off and back on. I have had this happen on major highways and other busy roads. The problem is unpredictable. A mechanic has determined this to be a problem with the throttle body, but the part is on national back order. My car is un-drive-able.

While traveling at a speed of 70mph an heading South on I69 in my 2010 Mercury Milan 2.5L premier, my vehicle jerked and started shaking with my RPM's jumping from 800 to 1100. The check engine light turned on and so did the wrench light. I turned on my hazards and made my way to the side of the road. I shut off the vehicle and restarted it and the warning lights turned off. I started on the road again and at about 45 mph it did the same thing. I got off at the next exit and went to autozone to get the code pulled. It was code P2111, throttle circuit in the open position. I did a google search and found out this is an extremely dangerous and common problem with this vehicle and the Mercury mariner, Ford Focus, and Ford escape with the same engine. I called the dealership and they literally laughed at me and informed me that the throttle body is on national back order and there are currently 7,000 of these orders awaiting to be filled. The dealership also informed me that the manufacturer of the throttle body and Ford are currently trying to give an updated part number which means that they are making a new part to fix this problem. This leaves me with a three year old car completely useless sitting in my driveway. This should be a recall as any car that just shuts off while you are on the freeway is extremely dangerous if you do not know what to do in that situation.

While driving, the car loses power. It is dangerously crippled as it has to be stopped completely and put in the park position before it will restart. When restarting if I take my hand off the key it will continue to try and start the engine until it starts. The check engine light either comes on and goes off or fails to come on..

While driving on a country road at 50 mph on mon. May 27th, the car seemed to stall, the gas pedal didn't work & we had to pull over asap. After stopping & restarting the car, we were able to proceed home. At the time, I thought it was a fluke. Then on May 30th it happened again on my street going around 30 mph, so I called the dealer and they said I could come in the next day. Later that same day, I was in rush hour traffic on rt 22(busy highway) & it happened while I was going 60 in the left lane, this was very scary as it was difficult to get over to the shoulder with so much traffic. I took my car to the Ford dealer on Friday May 31st & they said there were no alerts on the car, that they would do a software upgrade that would hopefully fix the issue. The receipt they gave me listed that a throttle body was needed, & it was on back order. I have been trying to minimize using the car, but on June 15th I had to go to my niece and nephew's dance recital in South NJ. While driving home on 295 (major highway) going around 65 the car died again. I was able to proceed after restarting the car, but didn't make it home again without it happening another time. I was making a left turn at an intersection light and the engine died. Thank god it wasn't a wider intersection or I would not have been able to coast through. At this point this car is unusable and is a death trap waiting to happen. I called another dealer, and the part is on back order there as well. This is clearly a major problem with defective throttle bodies in the 2010 Milan that should be recalled, I would like to know how this problem will be rectified. The proof is in the fact that they cannot make the part fast enough to fix the broken cars. The two dealers I dealt with are aware of this widespread problem, obviously due to a manufacturing defect with the throttle body assembly. I have <60K miles.

While driving 50mph going up a hill the car lost all power and the wrench symbol came on. Got pulled over to the side of the road after almost being hit twice. Turned the car off and waited 5 min. Restarted the car and it ran fine. Then 2 days later the same thing happened. Took it to the dealer and it coded out as the throttlebody. Well guess what they are on national back order with no estimated date of delivery. So here I sit hurry up and wait.

I was driving when all of a sudden the engine shut down leaving me stranded. Didn't want to take any chances so had it towed to Ford garage for repair. They said it was the throttle body and it would be $200 for part plus labor and diagnostic charge. This is a 2010 come on Ford !!! as a longtime Ford owner I am very disappointed. This was the second occurrence, the first time it started up and I was able to go on my way.
