This vehicle is one of the first post COVID available and had to be ordered and waited 6 weeks for. Subsequently I found what appear to be the threads from the rod cap and or bolt in a drain pan that was not emptied until after the failure. The metal in the oil went throughout the engine and it appears the failure occurred during the 5 yr / 100k KM (6213.7) mile powertrain warranty. Subaru Canada did not do any diagnostics before denying MY "out of warranty assistance" request which was done by the dealer. I confirmed the lack of diagnostics by checking with Subaru Canada myself and although I did not ask for it they said that since I didn't have oil and filter change receipts from a business that they would not consider it my claim and ignored my proof of purchase of oil and filters for this model and my advice that it was changed at 6k kilometer (3728 miles) intervals.
Subaru is know for high oil consumption problems with prior engine versions but this doesn't suffer from that issue and is checked on the 1st of each month (approximately (1k KM / 600 miles). The dealer advised that Subaru doesn't provide an approved method to repair (boxer engine requires case halves to be split) A complete short block assembly was required and the heads cleaned and machined and cam bearings and sprockets replaced as well as hard fuel lines and injector seals at grossly inflated (compared to USA) prices even factoring in the currency conversion. In addition this vehicle has had a Thermostatic Control Valve failure which was covered under warranty but replaced with the same defective part which Subaru removed and reverted back to a crossover tube in 2025.
It also suffers from other serious defects such as head / entertainment unit, CVT, battery, windshield. Subaru addresses them with extended warranties which don't fix the issue but simply delay the time you have to pay for failure but not any of the associated risks and costs, Subaru doesn't stand behind their products and Consumer Reports which loves Subaru is showing that by downgrading their reliability.
