About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
I was involved in an auto accident 9/18/2023. An SUV ran a red light and struck my care on the drivers side. The SUV struck me going between 45 and 50 mph according to the police report. My car was pushed over 20 feet and struck a traffic sign in the center median. My car was equipped with side curtain airbags and they did not deploy. I struck my head on the drivers side window. The front airbags failed to deploy also.

I've had Subaru my whole life and am a loyal consumer. Recently I was involved in an accident. My car was hit in the front on the passenger side. I'm including a photo to show you the damage to my 2017 Impreza. It was totaled and thankfully, I was not hurt. The airbags did not deploy. In light of the recent information that was released by the NHTSA concerning airbags not deploying, I feel I need to bring this to your attention. I will be sending the same information to the NHTSA. I realize in certain instances airbags do not deploy and perhaps this is one of those times. However I would feel irresponsible if I did not bring this to your attention. The claim was handled and the VIN number is. [xxx]. (this email was sent to Subaru). Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Vehicle was involved in a front end collision with another vehicle traveling perpendicular to each other. Speed of the Subaru was between 10 and 20 mph at time of impact with full ABS actuation on snow covered roads. The front of the Subaru was pushed back far enough so that the radiator is now in contact with the engine. The driver was wearing his seat belt, but still made contact with the A-pillar with his head, causing minor injuries. There was no air bag deployment.

After having car serviced, airbag warning light would not go off. I was told it would need to be "reset", then I was told there was a 90% chance there was a part over the rearview mirror where the front dome lights are that needed to be replaced. They ordered the part and when they were about to install it they said it wasn't that part but a wiring problem that is located over the passenger door inside the ceiling panels that were "chewed" by a rodent. However there were no signs of the rodent and they have no idea how the "rodent" might have entered the ceiling panel because of the tight space. I asked for a photograph. The wires are bare and it actually looks like a low grade fire caused from wires being exposed. I was told it was not under warranty and that it would cost over $600 dollars to repair. I was also asked at the time if I had any small rodent related pets, I do not. I called Subaru immediately because I wasn't buying the rodent story.the dealership has since called me back to tell me now they think a robotic arm might have accidentally damaged the wires in production but they are not sure. The car is not repaired as of yet, and I was told that the car is "safe" to drive. They also broke a part above the passenger visor when checking all this out because the space was so tight, yet a rodent got in and out and only destroyed those wires? they reassured me that they ordered the part they broke and will fix that when it comes in. However, because of the "wire problem" and me not approving the $600 "rodent" repair, my dome lights over my rearview mirrors will not work anymore, however they were working before they checked everything out. I am waiting for Subaru to call me back.

The first problem I had, related to the airbag system, was when the temperature began to heat up in the summer. The was parked outside in the sun all day and when I was going to leave work, I turned on the car and it gave me an error code related to the airbag system, and the airbag error light turned on. I called the dealer (this was 2 months after buying he car - May 2017) they told me to bring it in. I took the car to the dealer, they were not able to find the problem, they asked me to leave the car a couple days. After 4 they call and they stated they were not able to reproduce the problem (the temperature had cooled down those day), so I took the car home. A month later in June when it started to get really hot, one day coming back from lunch the error pops up. Without shutting the car down I took it to the dealer and they were able to read the error code - but they had no clue why it was coming up. Computer did not show any issues. So I left the car there again, and after a week they call that the found the problem, a bad sensor in the airbag system - the bad news is that the part would take a couple weeks to arrive. They ended up having the car for about 23 days before they were able to fix it. After they replaced that sensor I have not seen the problem again. The second problem happened 2 days ago (September) - while running on the highway, 90 degree day, about 45 mph, I had the air conditioner on sunroof closed but the shade open. All of a sudden I hear this loud bang and shattered glass starts to fall on me and I see even more through the rear view mirror. The sunroof exploded outwards. There was nothing inside the car, and the glass shattered outwards. I took the car to the dealer, they stated they had never seen this but they were going to try to take care of it given this should not happen. They are still working on it.

Car will not move for several seconds after hitting the gas and air bag light comes on. Coasting to a red light stop downhill, when I start to make left turn into traffic car does not respond to gas pedal for 2-4 seconds and when it starts moving it feels like its in a high gear bucking like a manuel transmission. It is a cvt. Last time this happened I rolled into the intersection almost to get hit by a truck, luckily it swerved to avoid me. I'm scared to drive this car. Enclosed is a picture of the air bag light on while I am driving, extremely unsafe vehicle

Dashboard airbag warning light is on when outside temperatures are hot. Happens alls surfaces/movement: Stationary, moving, city street, highway. Passenger seat empty, driver in car only. Subaru dealer blamed it on my seat covers, after pushing for more research dealership says there is a known problem with airbag sensor but only techs who call into their tech help line are made aware. The part to fix the airbag issue/light is not currently available, and no specific date the part will be available to fix. Dealership states the issue is the sensors located on the interior roof of my car next to interior lights. States the sensor wires aren't coated well enough from heat, causing the light to come on/not properly registering if there is or is not a person in the passenger seat. Airbag is off if it doesn't register a passenger. Happened three times in the past two weeks.
