The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that after she started parking the vehicle outside, the dashboard started melting. The contact called an independent mechanic and was informed to contact an authorized dealer. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle failed to meet the guidelines for the voluntary evaluation. The failure mileage was 108,000. Purchased Toyota 2009 vehicle on 12/30/2014. Was not informed of any recalls/voluntary programs for the vehicle. Employment from 2014 - January 2018 parked in the parking garage during the day. Changed employment January 2018 and parked in open parking lot, no parking garage available. Noticed minimal melting of the dashboard around July 2018. Assumed issue would auto-resolve in colder climate. Progressive worsening of "melting dashboard" summer of 2019. Returned to previous employer and began parking in the parking garage again during the day from Sept 2019 to present day. Covid 19 pandemic occurred. Noted melting of dashboard did not resolve, called mechanic and was advised to contact Toyota national corporation. Contacted Toyota corporation on 10/09/2020 and discussed case. Issue forwarded to Toyota corporation supervisor, henry carey case# [xxx]. per Mr. Carey, the voluntary program expired on 11/12/2018 and was extended to 150,000 miles or 10 years whichever occurred first. I did not receive any notifications regarding this voluntary program for the Toyota dashboard issue. Mr. Carey advised to submit complaint to NHTSA. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).'

When driving outside especially day time and when hot and humid, the car's dash becomes sticky and soft. I bought my car new in albuquerque, nm and the lived in ca, I did not notice the problem. Neither I received any notification from Toyota dealership or none in the service center checked with on this issue or told me that this could happen and hence need to be replaced as they did with unintended acceleration issue and power window switch malfunction. Now I have been experiencing this dash stickiness issue and Toyota in Hawaii is refusing to replace the defective and substandard product that they has put in at their own expense as they have done for millions of other customers. The reason doe refusal is that my car just passed 10 years since it was bought. But had I been known of this issue before even experiencing it, I would have got it replaced. I had been taking my vehicle regularly to Toyota service, but none bothered to check on this. Since it is not my issue and it is becasue of they using a defective part, they should help me in replacing it completely at their expenditure. I am with my family and I am very much concerned about the safety and risks associated with this issue as it could emit chemicals because of melting or chances of fire accident. Please help me to have the servco Toyota replace my dash. I brought this to Continental us Toyota head office, but they again directed me to servco Toyota, Hawaii, but they are refusing to help. Please intervene and help me get this fixed.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that a letter was sent out to the contact in 2010. The contact was told that the letter was not a recall and that the notice had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 8,300.

Approximately 4 months ago, my passenger side door handle had broken off as my husband attempted to get into the car. Than the door handle behind that came off when my child went to open the door to get into the car about a month later. Following both those incidents I was unloading groceries and went to open the rear door on the drivers side of the vehicle and that handle just came off. The only handle remaining on the car is the driver's side door. There was nothing out of the ordinary. No one pulled on the handles harder to open the doors. I dont understand how this could happen! I have owned and driven Toyota for over 20 years, as well as several members of my family and this has never happened! I do not use my car for anything like uber or lyft were it would have been used more frequently than normal and I feel this has to be some type of defect for it to happen to 3 door handles! I am also concerned for the safety issues this could cause my family, especially my child. My family and I have been loyol Toyota customers for many many years and I am just beside myself that this could happen!

I purchased a new 2009 Toyota Camry SE, after owning ten Toyota vehicles since 1978. I still own four today! I have never experienced anything like this issue in another car. In 2014-2015 (estimated) my entire dash board became sticky, as if I had poured oil on it. Today it releases a thick sticky residue onto the front windshield when parked in the sun. This makes the dash impossible to wipe... as towels, sponges, even leaves, etc., get stuck to it (see pics). I can't drive my car without first wiping the inside of the windshield each time it is parked in the sun, or this residue makes it opaque (see pics...after wiping it). This situation is exacerbated when driving towards the sun (see pics) and is a safety issue!! I'm concerned how the deteriorated condition of my dash affects the deployment of the passenger airbag or if it still even operates correctly? on 8/16/19, I discovered that Toyota extended its warranty to ten years from the original purchase date. Mine was 7/29/09...putting me only two weeks out of their 10-year warranty coverage. Toyota corporate and my dealership told me they could not offer any assistance in my case ("1 day or 1 mile over warranty and we won't help"). when challenged, Toyota could not confirm letters were mailed to all affected owners, only that an effort was made to send letters to some owners in 2015. Multiple models over several years are involved. I spent 8 hours on the phone appealing their decision, without success. A new dashboard costs $2600 (installed)!! I reported this issue here because it is a manufacturing/safety issue resulting from Toyota's use of sub par materials...like defective windshield wipers...if you can't see out of your windshield at freeways speeds because of the glare from your dashboard, or the residue stuck on your windshield...you are at risk of an accident. Also, there was an excessive amount of lint on the dashboard and the tire pressure monitoring system warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to kings Toyota (4700 fields ertel rd, cincinnati, oh 45249, (513) 683-5440) where it was diagnosed that the dashboard was melted and needed to be replaced. The dealer stated that the warranty was expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 1908150490, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. Consumer stated now it has actually broken down to the point that the padding and vinyl covering just rub off. My understanding is that manufacturers were required to install padded dashboards years ago for safety purposes. Toyota did extend the warrant because of this problem but the break down started naturally after the warranty period.

I saw on the news last week about this same issue and I called again on 8/5/2019 and was told again that no recalls were out. I use a sun guard for my windshield but that only helps minimally.
